O K before I do this. {attachment} anybody know if you heat plexiglass to bend it to a shape?

John Brown

I think Lexan would be a better investment than Plexiglas..... it's not breakable.

Kim_Howie

Actualy isn't not plexiglass it's cast acrylic

Acrylic bends with heat, cant recall what gas you use though, at working pulling a all nighter if you dont figure it out let me know I can call my buddy in the morning, with the right gas it can be tweaked and even flows out any blems like scratches, pretty neat to play with and flow out scratches.

I played with regular gas out of the gas/acy torches on some the engraving I did if your really careful it can be done that way but sometimes leaves a blem where you were with the heat. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

I recall something in one of my craft from years ago. It was a heat strip (electric) that was used to bend acrylic sheeting. I have a new issue of the catalog at work, but nothing here at home. If I find something tomorrow morning I'll give you a call. Sometime before noon 'cause I gotta spend the rest of the day at an outdoor wedding. Forecast: rain, hail, high winds! Friday the 13th! Go Figure!!!! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif

I remember an article in one of those late 50's pocket size Hot-Rod mags where they were making a small bubble canopy for a Bonneville type car..
They made a wooden buck w/ the desired shape, put the material on top and slipped the whole thing into the local Pizza place oven and heated it just enough to take on the shape..
It worked beautifully and was crystal clear!.

OK, I checked the latest catalog and the heat strip is no longer listed. However, they do say that Acrylic sheeting can be bent and formed by heating it to 250-300°.

What's the output temp of a hair dryer/heat gun? Maybe check it with an oven thermometer. Could be you have what you need at home???????

I think I'm going to set it on a small metal pipe and heat it with a plumber propane tank. Thanks guys http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Try a scrap piece first.............and go sloooooooow.

If you try to heat it too quick or too hot it will bubble and blister.

budnate
06-13-2008, 08:54 PM
Kim, its touch and go from solid to bending...if you are on it with the torch the air movement from the tip will distort the material when it gets loose to bend and harden that way, find your vynal graphic guy and borrow his heat gun, they get smoking hot with not much air flow..or drive over and use mine http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

cant find my buddy to get the gas mix that is the trick.

ok Kim, I caught up with him, the trick is to use Hydrogen & Oxygen to heat acrylic, as it does no throw soot and load the material with crud, use a rosebud tip and your going to need to rig up some kind of jig to hold your bend, as Acrylic has a memory and will try to go back to its original shape when it cools.

he also warned like I said there is a fine line of getting it loose to work with and over heating, if you over heat it, it will make tiny bubbles in the material where you were working and they will not flow out with more heat, the piece is junk at that point unless you can live with the bubbles.

get to work! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

I know this is two years old, put I was wondering how the scoop held up?

I am looking at building one for a '70's Super Stock tribute car.

What did you use to fasten the pieces together?

Thanks!

Kim_Howie
11-29-2010, 04:54 PM
Keith, Are you going to race the car?? If so at 130+ my scoop
came apart. I have used every type of glue that they say will work. The only one that I found to work good is

Kim_Howie
11-29-2010, 06:49 PM
The glue I used is IPS Weld-on #16

IPS Corp.
Box 379
Gardena,Ca 90248

It worked the best. If your going to race 1/4 mile I would put brackets in the corners and screw them together. Kim

Thank's Kim!

Were the originals 3-piece? It looks like the one on the #1 ZL-1 was one-piece vacuum formed. And after seeing some pics of your car, I could have sworn you went with a one-piece design too in the last few years.

And yes, this will be going on a race car (not show car), so it will need to hold up to constant abuse (9.5's to 9.70's at 135 - 140 mph).

Thanks again for your help!

Keith

Yes. I think that is on the 2nd Gen Camaro that initiated this thread.

The one on the #1 ZL1 is clear.

But yes that is the style I want to build.

Kim_Howie
12-02-2010, 08:28 PM
The first scoop I put the center part in between the sides . The 2nd scoop I put the center part on top of the sides. It held up a little better. It still broke ,but the glue held and the glass broke. The pressure broke it. I think what caused it to break is my scoop is open in the front by 2" ,air got in there and cracked it. I think if the front is sealed it wont hurt it. Who knows?? My scoop is 3 parts, the center is clear and the sides are smoked red.

Kim, I'd like to make a similar scoop for Benjamin's car, what did the final version look like?

What would you do differently, would / could you make the top and sides out of one piece and only have to glue the portion where the top angles down the front?

I'm thinking of a one piece unit in green....

Kim_Howie

Marlin, I made three scoops, not one of them held up.

What I did different, I had one made. In the long run they were cheap compared the time and money I had in the three I made. Let me find their phone # .
John Diekema found this place I think in Davenport , Ia.
John drove the ZL-1 at a couple of the reunions. Let me get their # from John and get back to you .

Ken,
Lets see................ the chrome blew off one pass.
The scoop broke three different times that weekend.

The second pass she ran a 9:80

I remember telling you if I died that night,
I would die a very happy man.
Watching my car dip in the 9's the first time out
made me a happy man
