Here is a picture of the trans tunnel on my Camaro. Are these kinks normal? the red oxide primer looks right but these two kinks DON't.

You have to love those factory "flaws". That's one of the only keys to originality in floors. Some have kinks and some have wrinkles. Most of the repop stuff is nice and smooth, but I like the kinks and wrinkles. IMO. You should see the wrinkles in my 69 Camaro's trans tunnel. It looks like a Sharpe (sp.)? dog.

My 68 Z28 has the same kinks in the tunnel. It is the original floor in the car so they are from new. Good to see someone else has them also.

I would think that part of the reason that the kinks/ridges are there is to add structural support...sort of like corrugated pipe...

That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yesterday, I picked up the replacement floor pan for my Camaro and I have not compared the pan side by side to the original but...it looks like it has those two "kinks" in the exact same place!

I believe the kinks you see are actually "gathers" caused by the stamping process. You notice them even more in nova tunnels where the excess metal is squeezed together,(gathered)into an untidy bunch, or ridge, or even stretched.
Areas that are not critical to exterior appearence are usually left this way in the stamping process. GM wasn't going to spend money on a dead smooth floor back then for something that no one was going to see. I base this 30 years of manufacturing experience, mostly in welding, but a few months in the stamping department. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

They put those there because when you go really really fast the body of the car stretches and becomes streamlined... It was first noticed on 68 Big block Novas which of course are really really fast...... Folks in the Aircraft industry saw this and designed the Concord shortly after that..... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You know, if this thread had been titled "Wrinkles in the floorpan" I probably wouldn't even have read it.

I was expecting something totally different! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

You're a sick puppy. Here we're trying to explain a pretty normal stamping procedure, and you assume it has a sexual connotation. I am totally shocked that a person of your stature would even think that. Next thing you know you'll be talkin shop with Bill Clinton. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
