View Full Version : Mander Chevrolet , North Vancouver
Funny i've not seen Mander Chev Olds of North Vancouver BC mentioned here. They built 427 Camaros in 1967-68. I saw one in a North Vancouver back yard about 20 years ago. White 67 with a raised lump in the hood still having the SS louvers on top with individual 4-2-7 letters plus the 427 TurboJet flag on the fenders. The engine was out and owner was in the backyard. Said he'd bought it new and he had the engine freshly rebuilt on a stand in the basement. I've never seen it since and can't recall what street it was on but the whole area is a sea of new condos and those houses are mostly gone.

Where's StriperSS...isn't Mander the dealer he mentioned working at?.
Did they and Conroy join together or both get bought out by Royal or???
Was the Mander Camaro hoods you mention a factory piece or some kind of S&S style like a Dana or Yenkos had?
Lotsa' great Vancouver Dealer Supercar action was going on back in the day...looking forward to more on this Dealer's cars too!.

Mander became Dick Irwin Chevrolet on 69 or 70 and there have been discussions about several 427 cars sold there.
Conroy became Royal Pontiac Buick. Conroy and Royal did a few dealer branded cars that John can probably offer more clarity on.
Mander/Irwin sold some nice stock iron but have neot heard of them being a conversion dealer.
I arrived in BC in the summer of 75 and the excitment was over by then.

Tom: I read your post awhile back and remembered Mander Chev adds that were on the back of Mission Raceway programs in the late sixties. While visiting a friend and fellow member this summer we came across the same add only this was from the back cover of B.C. Motorsports in British Columbia dated June 1968. Joe

Funny, I was in North Vancouver last week doing some stripes for a guy, who also has 3 hemi cars. We discussed a lot of things, but I never thought to ask about Conroy Cheetahs, or anything from Manders. Manders became Dick Irwin Chev Olds, and I worked there in the late 70's.
I see one of the sales guys was named Murphy. There were two mechanics named Murphy, brothers there. I wonder if they were related. Brian Murphy was a transmission guy, and left there in the early 80's and went to Kelowna, just north of me and bought or started a transmission shop. I heard that he has died recently. He was pretty involved in Drag racing with his 37 Chevrolet.
I'll do some digging and see what I can find out. I'll be back in North Van sometime this month.

Definately function before beauty!.
Seeing the HP is noted at 430, I wonder if they were L88 powered?.
Also if they built any 68's I wonder if Mander knew of/ordered any of the 9737 cars?.
Little on these or the Conroy Cheetah cars seems to exist so if anyone has more info/pics please post anything you have..
To date there's one existing Conroy Cheetah that appears to be the real deal plus a few possibles..

Lance,
A past (& current?) Cheetah owner appeared on the CP site in January and laid this interesting statement on us..
"...The Cheetah was built at Conroy Pontiac. The manager of Conroy was Henry Carmichael, who worked for Conroy in St. Catherines in Ont. There was 46 built over the 3 years of 66-8, 21 stayed in B.C. and the others shipped to Ont. 8 in 66, 7 in 67 and 7 in 68 . The first one was a 283 and was on display in Conroys glass garage in St. Catherines. ( Conroy was a big supplier of brake drums , roters etc to the factories around the area). Only one was buld with a 427 which Henry Carmichael raced at Mission.I talked with Henry Carmichael in 1986 at Royal City Pontiac. I have also traveled back to Cardston Alta to talk with Les Mills who worked for Conroys in the drum factory. These cars were given to the top salesmen in Conroys divisions. I owned a 67 for 13 years and returned (gave)it back to the second owner (first owner had traded it in on a Ford truck as he was transfered to Port Hardy by Finning) Richard has since restored it and my wife and I took it off Vancouver Island for the first time, since it was brought here, to the Sleepy Hollow Rod Run..."

That picture of the "dressed up" Mander Camaro shows up some where else.
I am sure it was an add for some parts joint in the States.
While I was young at the time, I am sure I would have remembered an abomination like that.
I am going digging but am sure I have a different Mander conversion add on the back of an old "Speed Sport News" or something like that.
I remember the Ambassadors car club in West Van having a 69 Cheetah , green with some orange on it.
A friend a couple years older than me had an L78 Chevelle from Manders and remembers that Cheetah in the 14's at Mission. He remembers them as very much a "badge car" more that the type of deal , Nickey , Motion, Yenco , were.
Another friend who owns a dealership on the island says his mech has a 66 or 67 gold Cheetah. I will past on this thread so possibly you could get more Cheetah info.

Car was really nice and very low milage. Until I saw that car in person I had never heard of it. I never thought of taking a picture of it. They are out there. I hope we get more info on the Mander soon,

Hi Keith, hope you're well!.
Were both your SD Beaumonts Mk1V cars?.
If yes, L34 or L35?.
Coupes?.

Beaumont SD's are cool on their own but a real Cheetah 427 car could be the coolest A-Body ever so I'm excited when any appear, hoping/looking for true provenance of being Conroy delivered w/ L36, L72 or maybe even L88 power!?

I've just bought a Deepwater Blue 1967 138 code SS396 Chevelle sold new by Mander Chevrolet. It is a 25,000 mile car that had been stored in a carport since 1980! It has its original 350HP engine and M20 4 speed trans with a 3.55 posi 12 bolt diff. I had been chasing the car for a little over a year and the owner called me the day of my 40th birthday to make a deal and my wife and I went and picked it up in Fanny Bay on Vancouver Island the day she phoned. Her husband bought it used 6 months into 67. The car has manual drum brakes, manual steering, rear defroster, simulated wood wheel, and D96 stripes. The engine has a solid lifter cam in it with M/T valve covers and a bigger Holley carb. After sitting for 32 years I changed all the oils primed the oil pump and fired it up the next day and drove it around that afternoon. The car has DC code 15x6 ralley wheels that I'm not sure are original or not I guess I will find out when the GM Canada Docs come. The car is in amazing condition and appears to have had one repaint in its life. I know Laurie Craig he lived on Salt Spring and had a towing Co here he used to always talk about his Z and wished he knew were was seeing these pictures of the car he talked about is very cool. I have no idea of the Mander history when I bought the car but I'm glad I researched the dealership.

HI, I am the NEIL MURPHY that is in the MANDER SUPPER HUGGER ADD. Duke McIntyre was my new car sales manager.
I went to work as a salesman with Mander in 1964 and because of my Mission racing background and technical expertise / muscle car passion, I became the go to salesman for the sale of our GM muscle cars and anything fast or exotic. Those were the days. When I think back at all the fun I had selling our GM muscle cars and getting payed for it, I would have payed Jim Mander for the once in a lifetime experience. Anyway I sold a tone of HP of the day before Jim Mander decided to retire and sell his dealership to Dick Irwin. Jim Mander was very progressive and would let us build or bring in some killer rides of the day. Many stories in my memory.
My favorite has to be the 1969 COPO ZL1 Camaro that we got from the Fred Gibbs returned ZL1's and I remember that 2 went to some Toronto dealers I think. Anyway that ZL1 just about got me fired but that will be a story for another post. Anything Mander Chev Olds just ask me, I was there and part of it.

Do you know if there was any Mander connection to the unknown Vin ZL1 that landed at Nurse Chev Whitby Ontario for George Eaton's Can-Am team to pilfer parts from if necessary while they were racing at Mosport?
Also, any chance you saved any old Mander paperwork or know of any existing?

Hi Neil;
I worked at Dick Irwins from 1976 to about 1979, and I'm wondering if you were related to Brian Murphy and his brother in the shop. Brian moved to Kelowna and opened a transmission shop, but sadly, died of Cancer about 10 years ago.
Also wondering if my light green 70 W-31 was originally sold there. I bought it off the used car lot in 76, and it was a factory white painted roof car.
In about 1976 they cleaned out a storage room of all the old records and unused sales stuff into a dunpster. I managed to save quite a bit of stuff, but sadly, lots got away!

Hi, I am the NEIL MURPHY salesman in the Mander Supper Hugger add. I am not related to any of the other Murphy's working in the Mander Service Shop. I sold muscle cars new & used at Manders until Jim Mander sold the dealership.
Little did I realize that it would be a great time in my life, Selling and racing cars for Mander Chev Olds.
Even raced a 1966 Corvair Convertible and beat the NHRA National record holder for the class in the first outing. Boy where they pissed, and they tore me down to prove I was cheating. Which I was not.
