Speaking of wheels, Here is a set of wheels I have that aren't real common. Actually other than a single ad in an old car mag, I've never seen another set of these. Does anyone have a set or seen these before? They are Cragar S/X. I have 5 of them. Someday I'm going to put them to use!

I agree, always a hoot to look at these vintage photos. I have a couple others of my Mystery Chevelle, but I don't have enough space on my personal web site to host anymore and then link to Is there another way?

Re: 1966 Chevelle Malibu SS 396 375 L78
Mike, make sure your pic is less than 100K and then save it to your desktop. then when you type in your post something like 66 Chevelle SS pic click on the continue button. that will take you to a second preview page as you already know. On this page will be your post along with an open second line that says browse. Click on that and open your destop and double click the pic file you want posted. It will then insert it into the line. Click continue a second time and it will post your pic as an attachment. If you cant rezise them I can do it for you and post them if you like. remember they have to be less than 100K to be posted
Forgot once you post it you can then delete it from your desktop and it will still be posted. |

Re: 1966 Chevelle Malibu SS 396 375 L78
JEFF and JOE...thanks very much for the advice and posting that pic., I will try one on my own later this evening.
That particular photo that Joe posted, was taken at Bristol International Speedway...circa 1968 I believe ( memory). Note the hood is slightly adjusted upward and no hood louvers., hard to see in this shot....the actual photo shows it nicely, but it scanned a bit bright.....all for some added cold air flow...oh and underneath it....L-78, Cowl Plenum Air Cleaner, and an M-22! Re: 1966 Chevelle Malibu SS 396 375 L78
Mystery Chevelle is an interesting name. Do you know reason the car was given this name? There was a lot of mystery to the early BB. The 1963 427 Mystery Motor was used for a short time in 63, then in 65 NASCAR allowed the Chevy guys to run 427 cu in to compete with 426 Hemi and 427 Ford and just by "coincidence" the 1965 396 425hp engine had enough meat on it to bore to 427. Then in 66 Corvette had 427 450hp for a short time until it was changed to 427 425hp with no change to engine. Also in 66 was the Chevelle 396 375hp engine that was almost exactly like the 1965 Corvette 396 425hp. Why the name Mystery Chevelle? Well, it's pretty much as was said....The Mystery was in How the heck the car ran so fast and broke so many speed records....which goes directly to under the hood! You see, this car was bought for one reason and one reason only....to go Racing! So it was ordered with the best goodies that one could order in March of 1966. 396/375hp, M-22 Rock Crusher Trans ( one of 12 made in 66 )4:56 posi rear and Cowl Plenum Air Cleaner. Leonard Racing was a fairly popular Father and Son racing team out of Independence VA. They had been buying a new Chevy every year for the sole purpose of racing, and in 1965 they were racing a 65 Impala with that aforementioned 396/425hp engine, a Black one at that! When Mr Leonard AKA "POP" made the deal at B&L Chevy it went down like this: One New 66 SS with the above mentioned options and then some... PRICE: One 65 Impala minus the engine, plus $1000 Cash. DONE DEAL. and that's what the dealership did, they wanted that Impala back that they sold the year before and "POP" wanted that engine so he could swap it in that new 66 SS every now and then and that's what he did... and some very FINE TUNING of which nobody seemed to ever figure out...as he told me in a phone call one day back in 1996.... "I was turned away from more tracks down here then I was allowed to Race at!" I have an hour phone call conversation on tape with "POP" Leonard....the real and original "POP's Mystery Chevelle" owner and what stories he told me about this old car!! So the Mystery was just that... How the heck that car went so much faster than all the cars in the day!
Here's one more B&W from 1967. Lets see if I can do this now Mike |
