Re: Sam Griffith's Super Savoy!
Both Gordy and Jerry said the Plymouth did see limited street duty. Can you imagine being on the receiving end of an S/S on the street back in the early 60's? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/blush.gif

Thanks for sharing your way cool Savoy with us! I remember the first time I saw (maybe I should say...heard) it... Bruce, Your slipping, where is the video of this monster running!!! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif [/ QUOTE ] Bruce cracked the whip and I got busy. My boys and I had some fun this weekend video taping the Savoy making some noise and smoke. Dad’s fun was driving the Plymouth, my boys’ “fun” was shooting the video and teaching (dense) Dad to edit the digital video tape. We headed out to a relatively remote area of the Sonoran Desert so as not to bother anyone and here’s what we got.... Making dBs and CO in the S/S! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif P.S. Special thanks to Mick, Keith, and the boys! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |

Re: Sam Griffith's Super Savoy!
Hey Chris,
Thanks. It was fun putting it together. It was my 1st and I look forward to the next one. I used Mac's iMovieHD. Really pretty simple, if you have a personal tutor (aka my youngest son). You are sharp Chris. I was goofing with the last clip. Man, nothing gets past you guys! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/haha.gif |

Sam,
Fantastic job on the video, I'm jealous on the music and editing, that was fun to watch and I'm sure you boys had a great time making it too. No writers strike in the desert. Now I'm feeling some serious pressure to get my video up and running. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/headbang.gif |

Re: Sam Griffith's Super Savoy!
Glad you all like it. I picked the song for a few reasons
1. I had it in my collection. 2. Although there are other groups that I like better, this song is IMHO one of the best R&R songs of all time. Gets my blood pumping. 3. Get no satisfaction is a little bit like get no respect i.e. with looks like the Savoy you might pass it over as a quick car - the S/S did all its talking at the strip. Gordy relayed a cool story to me at the diner when I met with him in March. He told me that he hit the tracks about 2 weeks or so after getting the car. He was still learning the car and all of its idiosyncrasies and still hadn't mastered it by the time he raced it at the drag strips. He took alot of ribbing at the track because of how ugly the car was. Well by the end of the evening Gordy hadn't performed the way he wanted and a bunch of 409 guys (Verne this is for you) came up to him with a "beer can trophy" with a crude inscription that said "first place - ugliest car". Gordy took it in good fun and came back to the tracks later after figuring his Plymouth out and began his dominance over those rascally 409s. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |
Re: Sam Griffith's Super Savoy!
Neat story Sam!

Re: Sam Griffith's Super Savoy!
Received some neat orange surprises recently. Al Gartzman is one of Gordy's good friends from Chicago. They used to run around together when Gordy had his S/S. I run into him occasionally and saw him a couple of weeks ago at the Pavillions as he lives out here now. He asked me if I had ever heard of these (see photo) and I told him I had seen them on vintage cars over the years occasionally. Al used to have a sweet '62 421 hipo Pontiac but got rid of it and asked me if I would want these for my '62. He bowled me over. What a decent gesture. He told me where these plates came from which I did not know. Anyone know what these plates were used for (I obviously don't get out enuff)?

Re: Sam Griffith's Super Savoy!
Continuing with the orange theme. I received this letter in the mail last week from Jerry Z., the second owner of the Super Stock. Just blew me away.

I remember those fobs from several older vet relatives as they did that in AZ and if I remember correctly california too.. what a sweet addition and gesture!

Re: Sam Griffith's Super Savoy!
Steve - that's about right. As Al explained to me he got them from the "Currency Exchange" i.e. places that you got yr check cashed in the Chicago area. These stores would also double as proxy for dept. of motor vehicle where you could get your new plates. These samples would be displayed on the wall behind the counter to show what the new (each year they changed) colors were.
BTW, Al worked at Nickey Chevrolet for a few years in the parts dept. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif |

That is a beautiful '62 Plymouth, I wonder if it is the same shade of blue Bill Hanyon of Milne Brother's Plymouth ran? As some can remember, Bill Hanyon Blair's speedshop tuned 413 blue '62 Savoy shut down all 1963 426 max wedge cars for S/SA class at the 1963 Pomona winternationals! Can you ask Gordy if he recalled racing Bures Hall or Bob Delia 409 and Z-11 427's in the same Chicago area? Thanks!!
|
Re: Sam Griffith's Super Savoy!
Hey Raj, welcome aboard- sounds like you appreciate and been around these beasts. My info indicates that the Milne Bros. Ply. was a '62 Fury Hardtop. What I don't know is what tranny he had, but I'll bet you it was the push button 727 https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif . My Plymouth was the darkest blue (really a medium blue) available from the factory (I have a Ditzler Paint chart for '62 Plymouths - but can't upload it tonight for some reason). He may have painted it a darker color or worked something out with the dealership when he ordered it. I will surely check with Gordy regarding racing Bures Hall or Bob Delia.
Thanks! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif So - interesting user name u got there! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif |

Re: Sam Griffith's Super Savoy!
Sam I remember Allen Gartzman..and his wife ! He used to go to cruises at Fluky's Hot Dogs in Niles. At the time he had a63 faux Super Duty Catalina...black/red guts. Later he moved to AZ I think and aquired the only known 62 SD Grand Prix ??? I think that was it anyway. I had my 61 faux SS Impala 409 at the time.
