Back in the late 60's dad was on his way to work and saw Arnie broken down in the Flint area. Something wrong with the base engine, and Arnie asked dad if he had a piston for a six cylinder GMC. Dad did, so he ran home and got it. Arnie rebuilt the motor there on the side of the road and got her going again. K |
Story #2:
Howard Maseles used to drive the truck for Arnie. Howard said they were back east somewhere, heading for the west coast, and the brakes went out on the truck. Arnie said "that's ok; you can just use engine braking and we'll fix the brakes when we get back home". Howard said he didn't recall that they ever did fix the brakes on that truck. K |
Story #3 (not quite a tow rig story, but related):
It was the last day of work before Christmas, in the late 1990's timeframe. I left work early to run up to the Case/IH dealer to get some parts for my Farmall. I was northbound on I-75, about to make the transition onto westbound I-69 (in Flint, Michigan) when this blue Chevy crew cab dually kind of eases past me on the right. I noticed it had Illinois plates, and I also noticed it said "Leased to Simpson Motorsports" on the side. That seemed kind of familiar, and as it went by I thought to myself "gee, the guy driving that looks like Arnie Beswick"... Just about the time he gets straightened out in front of me, this huge tarp/blanket blows off the back of the truck (...scares the daylights outta' me!) and off into the median, revealing this HUGE pro mod type motor with tiger stripes on the valvecovers! We both roll down the road a little ways when the pickup pulls off to the right, and I follow. The driver hops out of his truck and we meet there on the shoulder, I stick my hand out and say "You lost your tarp, Arnie".. He gets this look on his face, that he always gets when he sees me or my dad, like "...I know you from somewhere..". So we exchanged our usual introductions and then start deciding what to do about the tarp, which is far enough back down the roadway that we can't see it. I suggest that I am going to a tractor store, and he could follow me there and buy another, but he decides since the weather looks good he'll just make a run for it. We say our good bye's and off we go, each in our separate directions. Well....after I bought my tractor parts I headed back home and....guess what...the tarp is still laying in the median. I stopped and grabbed it, threw it in the back of my truck. Then, when I went to Norwalk that next August, I brought it with me and gave it back to him. We had a good laugh about that, and I suppose if you asked him about it he would still remember... For those who don't know, Arnie used to have a lot of work done at Diamond Collision, in Flint. He had retrieved the motor from the car to have it freshened up and left the car there for some additional work. K |

I've always loved talking to that guy.

I remember in the early nineties my family and I were at Bloomington Gold Corvette show when it was actually in Bloomington Illinois!
Anyway we were invited to Dale Smith’s(RIP)(OEM Glass) farm for a bbq party and by the end of the night Ronnie Sox and Arnie Beswick were doing burnouts in the driveway in their respective drag cars. It was an experience I will never forget. Richard Branson has his space flight, I have Lil’Boss and Tameless Tiger doing burnouts right in front of me!:worship: |
"by the end of the night Ronnie Sox and Arnie Beswick were doing burnouts in the driveway in their respective drag cars."
Any liquid courage involved with that display.. I'm sure that WAS a memorable experience. Too bad we can't download images from our memories to display. Seems computers/phones can do almost anything else. Wonder how long before they can do this...:dunno: |

When Terry Davis showed up with this at MCACN '15 I told him"I used to think I had a nice trailer!" Note the VA trailer tag. I wish I had a good pic of his new lowered black CC dually. 1st class rig!!
The grey ATC belongs to Keith Kiser, he has a new truck since then too. Note the rear door graphics on both!! |

Our rig we used to go tour carshows for 5 or 6 weeks in the US. It was the way to travel & camp in at the various shows we attended.

I have to control some water and get my driveway in at the new place.
I'll be glad when I'm done with the house and shop so I can start towing junk that is more fun. |

Added a 1988 Chaparral to the team. It was a California based trailer until a few years ago. Has some paint bubbling on the side pouches that I’ll fix and paint the pouches black to match the ‘86 dually. Then build out the inside to be more travel and doorslammer friendly. In the past it served a road race team with two formula Fords on a hydraulic lift, then nostalgia funny cars and fuel dragsters. She measures 42’ including the tongue.

Not mine, but my friend Craig Wick (@Wicked Fabrication). He asked me to appraise it and I fell in love with the rig. It’s so sleek and it just presents itself like a GM show truck. All 6 wheels were CNC machined in his shop. It has air bags, but the frame is custom, stepped on both ends to allow full travel. It still hauls, and has multiple cross country tows under its belt.

Tom406 that thing is awesome looking. Thanks for sharing.

Got my 42' Chaparral gutted out on the interior and delivered it to the sandblaster yesterday. Getting ready for bodywork and a new paint job, and some upgrades inside. This thing is really hard to photograph.

Nice rig Dave.
I traded in my 2021 truck and picked a 22' in black that matches the color of my trailer. Was going to get another Duramax, but too many issues with cylinder heads and DPF tanks having problems up here in the northern climates. Settled on another 6.2 and this AT4 already has 12,500 miles of towing over the past couple of months. https://i.ibb.co/0yV6hXB/IMG-1246.jpg https://i.ibb.co/KLKzH44/IMG-1230.jpg |

Update on my trailer restoration project. Blasted all the steel, inside and out. SPI Epoxy primed, then bodywork to straighten out some dents and ripples and surface rust pitting. Shot the right side with single stage black, and the side door and rear door frame and jamb with white epoxy so far. Will finish paint the white parts then turn it around and do the long side, then inside. Will try to just buff out the aluminum siding, its in pretty good shape. This thing is kicking my butt working around the weather and all but its coming out nicely. When all shot then I'll give it a cut and buff. The deep black matches the truck much better than the dark grey.
