69 Z28 pad vin stamp in April '69?

Ebay # 322374943323

Has anyone ever seen an LA built Z28 with a vin # on the block front pad in April? That seems months later than I have ever seen on an original block?

Jerry's report says original to the car, but the "7" and the "D" look way to close together to have been gang stamped.

Not saying it isn't original. Kurt could probably shed some light on this one.

Report also says the housing is original to the car, but the casting date has been ground off?????

The VIN on the pad would be correct for this timeframe, but it sure would be nice to see the whole pad.
I think the stamping could be legit from the little I see.

Jonesy has many more examples for comparison than I do. Like everyone else, I would like to see better pics.

Re: 69 Z28 pad vin stamp in April '69?

I know we've seen the very early (Oct-Nov '68) '69 LA built Camaros with the vin by the oil filter. By '69 the vins appeared on the front pad, but like Norwood, LA seemed to use both the pad and oil filter area from late '68 through early '69. My 01B built LA Z is stamped by the oil filter and my 03B built LA Z is stamped on the pad. I have not seen an LA built Z with a pad stamped vin with a body date later than March. '69, thats why I'm asking. Does anyone have any examples of an LA built Camaro with a pad stamped vin later than March. '69?

Re: 69 Z28 pad vin stamp in April '69?

Yes, the stamping is original and correct for that period with the VIN on the pad. Spacing is correct as well. The latest LA pad with Vin on the pad which I have is 418DZ in a 5A built car.

I have two V0407DZ pad pics with different LA VINs.

Do the stampings look the same on yours ?

The stamping looks like many other early april assembly stamps I have observed as well.

Re: 69 Z28 pad vin stamp in April '69?

A skilled person can make the stampings look like others in the same date range.. Still holding my opinion until a better pic is produced.

Re: 69 Z28 pad vin stamp in April '69?

You would really have to have a lot of knowledge and a large database of pics to know all the quirks. Some months, some weeks have their own characteristics from each plant.

In the case of this car it would be really nice to see the whole pad.

Re: 69 Z28 pad vin stamp in April '69?

I don't have a lot of LA vin stamp examples, thats why I am asking. There is the large "2" in the vin sequence in question, which has been seen in the LA stamps. The 7 and D seem very close in the assembly stamp and the lines on the surface may be sanding lines that are not parallel, hard to see. Theres always more to learn, I know I am.

The more the pads are posted and talked about the more or better the knowledge is..

It's not impossible and probably unlikely but I'm of the old "trust but verify" mentality.. I have also not given an opinion; not that it matters as I am not an "expert".

I don't think this type of info should be shared openly. It just helps others create more fake stampings.

I agree which is why I didn't post any examples, however if someone post an opinion that it's a questionable stamping, it's equally important to offer an opinion in favor of the stamping based on original examples. Imagine if it were your car and the stamping was questioned. Always two sides...

cook_dw 01-01-2017 02:21 PM

Re: 69 Z28 pad vin stamp in April '69?

Yes and I have been on that side... Currently this is just a discussion about a stamping. I dont think anyone has called it a restamp but there have been wishes or requests for a better pic.. This conversation more than likely would not made it this far if the pic quality were better. Also you know as well as anyone that when a 9 Z is up for sale the first thought (unless its original unrestored) is the engine a restamp, is the tag a repop, etc.. Just the nature of the beast. I enjoy the conversation but the details as to why or what makes it this or that are not needed as Jonesy mentioned.

The V0407DZ stamps are identical; the VIN stampings differ slightly. One has a characteristic no restamper would duplicate.

There is no question both pads are genuine.

That statement maybe true, but how are people suppose to get educated, so someone doesn't get scammed. Just believe one so called expert. I like the variety of unbiased opinions here, so i could make a decision based on a base of knowledge that is found on this site.

Re: 69 Z28 pad vin stamp in April '69?

I believe you should post questions especially if you are considering buying a car or part. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, which makes for a healthy debate. No one knows it all, and therefore information and knowledge is shared and gained. When this debate evolved to the point the stamping became questionable I shared my opinion based on identical date stamping and those very close.

Sharing too much information can aid those counterfeiting stampings and tags, or building a fake car.

Learning this stuff takes a lifetime x 10.. This is exactly why I do not consider myself an expert and never will. I am always learning. How I have gained what little I know about these sorts of things is by research, investigating, asking questions & for opinions and collecting data for many years. I do not share what little I know because I have worked so hard for that small amount of knowledge that I do not want to give a dirty rat an opportunity to get anymore knowledge for them to make a buck by lying, cheating and deceiving people.. You also have to have the desire, drive and want to learn this info. Its not cut and dry.. For the record I respect many of the members here opinions but I am the type to have to feel comfortable with what I am seeing before I can agree or disagree. Hopefully that makes some kind of sense.

my 70 Z28 has the same holes in the rear lower valance, they are from a trailer hitch, this 69 REALLY hauled at one time

stripes are wrong on the lower deck lid IIRC

Nice car, should have the headlight bezels with the chrome trim and the rockers should be blacked out, there are some items that need to be corrected however that color combo is hard to come by.

Mark,

My Yellow/Yellow Z28 is LA Built and front pad stamped.

I have the popular 0407 date and the 7D looks as close to each other as the other stamp being discussed here. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...0-dsc00393.jpg
