Degnan Chevrolet Philadelphia PA - ZL1
'
Anyone know anything of the ZL1 advertised by Degnan Chevrolet Philadelphia PA as Sept. '70 ad below? Since posting the ad in the old newspaper thread, I found a few pics also cars from Degnan Chevy on the interweb but nothing ZL1 related? Whether sold by Degnan or dealer traded, does anyone know anything of this situation and/or which car the advertised ZL1 maybe was? Still looking for info re' the above Sept. '70 Newspaper ad advertising one of the ZL1's @ Degnan Chev Philly. Anyone/anything? ~ Pete |
Re: Degnan Chevrolet Philadelphia PA - ZL1
Likely suspects are ex-Gibb cars re-distributed to dealers in PA. Heading the list would be the two cars Penske Chev ended up with. Not known if they were the selling dealer.
#17 N609462 Cortez Silver…still exists #44 N618396 Fathom Green…unknown Ammon R. Smith had two; definitely sold one. #20 N609599 Cortez Silver… unknown, last reg was in the Pacific NW Sutliff Chev #35 N612763 Fathom Green…still exists Two were sent to MD #34 N610899 Fathom Green…still exists, for sale #40 N615198 Fathom Green…still exists Still leaves 5 Gibb cars with unknown re-distribution. |

Thanks for chiming in William also listing likely suspects! Has the possibility Degnan Chev delivered any ZL1's ever come up before? ~ Pete |
Re: Degnan Chevrolet Philadelphia PA - ZL1
Nope, never heard of them. But there were other dealers. Jon Mello sent me an ad from the May 17, 1969 Competition Press. It was for Fairway Chev-Buick in Reedsport OR. The ad was for both COPOs and stated they were "Taking orders for June delivery."
Never heard of them either; not known if they had any of the cars. |
Re: Degnan Chevrolet Philadelphia PA - ZL1
In the ad maybe the Camaro had a new zl1 installed and not born with?
|
Re: Degnan Chevrolet Philadelphia PA - ZL1
William, wasn't number 25 sold in Pa also??
And my old number 34...for sale? Is it restored? how much? |
Degnan Chevrolet Philadelphia PA - ZL1
ZL1 #'s 17 + 25 + 44 are all on the list here as being Penske delivered.
Looks like they were indeed there as the colors match up nicely w/ the old Penske ZL1 ads as below. Would dealers like Degnan or others advertise cars known available to them as a dealer trade and bring them in if a real buyer at hand? Re: Degnan Chevrolet Philadelphia PA - ZL1
#25 is an orange automatic. The Degnan car was a 4-speed.
#34 is at Hausfeld Classics in Ohio. No price listed. Someone who would know told me it has been re-bodied. Penske DX'd at least one of its ZL1s to another dealer. The ads are dated June 12 & 26, 1969, weeks after they were re-distributed. Don't know if dealers advertised other dealers cars but bundling a white-elephant ZL1 into a trade was a definite possibility. Others were also DX'd; #68 was ordered by Harris Chev but sold by Geyer. Legend has it Gibb still had one of the cars into the '70s. Maybe an L-88 Camaro would have been a better idea. |
Re: Degnan Chevrolet Philadelphia PA - ZL1
Thanks William...
I forgot the orange 25 was automatic.. Wow, all the work that was done to save the original body on my old car...and now they rebodied it I know the buyer told me they were going to acid dip it and put a repo complete floor in it, as the car had a correct original 4 speed complete floor/tunnel installed, but it had patch panels also where the original floor that was used apparently had some rust. I thought they were crazy, but now I think they are crazier if they rebodied the car now! |
Re: Degnan Chevrolet Philadelphia PA - ZL1
i would bet one of the ZL-1s came to cincinnati also. i heard it from employees it was on the showroom floor
|
Re: Degnan Chevrolet Philadelphia PA - ZL1
Makes sense. All of the returned Gibb cars went back to Norwood, 10 miles from Cincinnati. Would like to know if anyone remembers details.
3 non-Gibb ZL1s were sold new in OH but not near Cincinnati. #53 white 4-speed Lyle Chev [Cuyahoga Falls], #65 Fathom green 4-speed Lavery Chev [Alliance], #69 orange 4-speed Huebner Chev [Carrolton]. |
Re: Degnan Chevrolet Philadelphia PA - ZL1
When the norwood workers where building the ZL1 and copo cars, I wonder how many employee's said i have to buy one and ordered one for them self.
|
Re: Degnan Chevrolet Philadelphia PA - ZL1
norwood employees would come down to queen city and use their gm discount. The hoosier hell copo was bought with a gm discount. One of the gm employees tried to buy the ZL-1 with a gm discount but they said no. Anybody with more information please let me know. Its out there somewhere

Re: Degnan Chevrolet Philadelphia PA - ZL1
The ZL1 Camaro was a sales disaster for Chevy. Not only was Gibb supposed to have an exclusive on the COPO, the initial option msrp was supposed to be about $2000. That would have put sticker price around $5300; maybe he would have been able to sell them. Instead they jacked the option price to $4160 putting list price over $7300. Then they allowed other dealers to order them.
I believe when Chevy re-distributed them they cut the invoice by around $2000 and even that didn't help much. The Degnan ad states "Save over $2000." |
I own an interesting 69 Camaro that the Supercar Registry confirmed was sold through Degnan Chevrolet. It is a Daytona Yellow SS 396. 4000 miles of drag racing etc then parked in a field, left for dead since. Last registered in ’71. It has a non original motor. Has many “Motion-like” cues - fuel pumps in trunk, typical traction bars, motion decals on air shocks, MT valve covers, Sun guages, wood aftermarket wheel, factory fiberglass cowl hood - not a repro, etc. I think the car is something special or has had extensive drag history at the least. Any thoughts or recollections of this car?

Sounds like a very cool car and welcome aboard Brian!
I expect you meant the NCRS confirmed the car was shipped to Degnan but no matter and looking forward to hearing more about it also please know we really love pictures here! :beers: ~ Pete . |

Here are few images of the car. It's rough but I feel it has some unique options and history. It's an X66 car but was painted up to look like a Z28.

Just checking back on this one hoping for another update. Cruising for more info on Bob Litchko's Schmidt's Beer car indicates it may originally have been Blue, what color was it w/ the Schmidt's livery as it looks Red in the blurry pic above? If Blue, was it Lemans or Dusk Blue also what of the 2x DB M21 cars on the list here as Gibb delivered, known as definitely delivered by Gibb or possibles for the missing Degnan/Litchko/Schmidt's car? :hmmm: ~ Pete . |

Came upon one more pic of Bob Litchko's ZL1 in Schmidt's livery as below. We've come this far but still haven't confirmed the Vin yet, an unaccounted for/real ZL1! :beers: ~ Pete . |
Quote:
The Schmidt's sponsorship paid for race entry fees, support costs, and the guys were paid $10.00 an hour if attending a car show promoting the beer. |
I'll see if Gary Ewing knows or remembers Bob Litchko…..they may have pitted together or been together at some events back in the sponsorship years.
|
Gary says there were 6 cars sponsored by Schmidt’s from Maine to Florida.
