Is this a COPO?

I have a '68 Camaro SS big block 4-spd with a VIN that shows it was built on the production line right next to one of the Yenko COPOs listed in the 1968 Camaro COPO VIN list. Mine is 8NXXXXX1 and the one on the list is 8NXXXXX2. The block looks like it was replaced with a '69 396 block but all other parts on the engine tie out to proper date coded 68 396/375HP parts including heads/intake. Wondering if block was swapped out at some point.

Can you tell me what I should look for on the car to see if it is a COPO or not? No paperwork available.

It does have 4:10 posi rear and M22 matching #'s.

I know it might be a long shot but you never know. Thanks for your help.

Clarification on the transmission. It has not been verified if it is M22 or M21 but it is #'s matching.

Bakes,

Am no expert, but what I picked up from the smart guys around here:

https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/scholar.gif The list you looked at was for '68 Yenko VIN list which were not ordered via COPO. They were converted to 427s by the dealer. There were no factory 427s for Camaros in 1968. The COPO for a factory installed 427 did not debut until the '69 model year.

When the smart guys wake up tomorrow you will get a definitive answer. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/tongue.gif

I thought there was one maybe a few more in late 1968 that wer ordered as copo's .....I could be wrong.
...What does the trim tag look like?

Sam's half right... while its true the 68's didn't come with factory installed 427's, they WERE still COPO cars. Look for a 140mph speedometer, "magic mirror" trim tag and a fat front sway bar.

Show a pic of the trim tag. They were unique.

Thanks everybody. Here are some photos including cowl tag. Link to photos since I still haven't mastered the image thing here. I will check on speedometer and sway bar size.

Re: Is this a COPO?

Also, the car is Grotto Blue with very low mileage.

I also wanted to mention the vintage looking traction bars and BV code rearend. I have seen these in old photos. What do you think?

Doesn't look to be a Yenko trim tag.

Re: Is this a COPO?

Car was in Fenton, MI a few years ago.
Just cause the VIN is close to a Yenko doesn't mean much. Lots of cars like that out there.

It does appear to be an original L78 car, had a restamped block last I knew.

Bakes1111 10-06-2008 05:28 AM

Re: Is this a COPO?

Thanks Kurt. It still has a restamped block and in OK.
I was wondering if it started out as something different since all other engine parts seem to date code correctly to 68 and VIN was next to Yenko. Glad you cleared things up.

What do you think this is worth? It has less than 40K miles and is in pristine original condition but not a 100pt? SS, 4-spd, 4:10 posi, Grotto Blue.

Thanks.

Re: Is this a COPO?

Grotto blue is a personal favorite of mine...that is what mine was/is. Another D2 car...trying to make mine look like the ex-Goldberg Yenko. I wish I could find one like you describe, let me know if you back away or are thinking of "flipping".

May be a stupid question, but what's a "magic miror" trim tag? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/confused.gif

Although the numbers on this example are different being it's a Corvair tag, look at the bottom area of this tag...
