What is the correct air cleaner for a 1969 L72 427 engine?

Is it this one? Does anyone have a part number for it?

The 1969 Factory Assembly Instruction Manual lists (on UPC 6, C8) the Air Cleaner as number 6484597 but I cannot find this number anywhere else.

I have seen some places list GM number 6485891 as the correct air cleaner like this Ebay auction:

Dave, The air cleaner you listed (6484597) is for a two barrel small block. You have to flip to the end of the Assembly Manual, page 483. I am assuming you're looking for a Cowl Induction air cleaner by the eBay link you posted. The big block ZL2 air cleaner is the same as the small block air cleaner with the only difference being the small block air cleaner uses a spacer to make up the height difference.

Joe, Thanks, page 483 makes things much clearer! Actually I am not looking for a Cowl Induction cleaner. I have been making myself nuts trying to figure out what is the correct air cleaner for a 1969 Camaro with a 427. So I don't need a ZL2 then and I am totally looking at the wrong air cleaner! Which page is for non-cowl induction?

ummm ... the 427 never came in a Camaro without the cowl hood

the 396 did, but you had to use the SS hood ... the SS 396's without the cowl hood used the open element air cleaner that all hi perf Chevys used ...

Since you're not looking for a cowl induction air cleaner, I think your car might use an open element air cleaner. Have to do a little researching.

Thank you Wayne. Then I am looking for a ZL2 and I should figure out page 483 of the Factory Assembly Manual. Are there any other books (perhaps a restoration book) that might make it a little clearer on what the different parts are? I think I have a lot to learn. What is a L48, M35, M38, etc.. I tried a few RPO decoders on the net and the answers do not make sense.

Factory Chevrolet parts manuals are a good place to start. Try to pick up some from (and I'm speculating here) 1970-75. Those should have most of the part numbers you need inside. You can use the parts manual in conjunction with the assembly manual to figure out most of what you'll need. Keep in mind none (any?) of the numbers will be any good at the local Chevy store, but you can use them to figure out what you'll need.

As far as tracking down old parts catalogs, others here are probably a better resource than me (I must have a half dozen full dog-eared sets and I'm not parting with 'em <g>).

Go to camaros.net, and search for a 2-3 year old thread by kevinw. There are great pics showing the differences between repop and original Cowl hood air cleaners. Don't know what you are building, but I suspect Yenko clone. Real cowl hood air cleaners are very, very pricey, so you might consider repop. I have a clone, but I have all GM stuff on her. My air cleaner was pricey at the time I got it, but cheap by today's prices.

Wayne, Thanks for the advice. I will look into getting parts manuals.

Unreal, I do have a clone (that is not even close...yet). I am not looking for perfection (for example it is a black 69 and there were no black 69s) but something that is a better tribute car than when I got it. That is where my confusion started since I have seen other tribute cars without the cowl induction air cleaner but with a cowl induction style hood. I was thinking about getting a Ricks Camaro Reproduction shown here:

You don't need an extention if you have a big block and a stock aluminum intake. The extentions were only used on Z28's and 350 small block cars.

You'll need the flange, too. There are two out there. One with concentric OD and ID with one edge with a flat cut. The other one has a sort of egg shaped OD, and no flat. That's the more correct one.

As for clones, there's a wide difference between Yenko clones out there. Everything from 350's with Yenko stripes, to very accurate replicas. I would not use a clone as a model for building your car.

As for your 10 10 car, Jack Douglass Chevy in Chicago made their own "semi-authorized" Yenkos, and used colors outside the 6 Don used. I don't know if they made any black ones, but maybe Steve Bimbi, from Nickey (stefano) could shed some light. He's quite knowledgeable, and very willing to help.

Here is a picture of an original Camaro flange and lid. Notice no flat cut off side, it is mostly round or oval shaped.
