Dale Duster Nova
The January 2011 Issue of Popular Hot Rodding-Hometown Heroes- has a '72 Nova a fellow bought used at Dale Chev. that the salesman called a 'Dale Duster'. Says it had a 427 engine installed & 2K miles on it.Anyone know anything about these{hopfully more than one made} cars?

Re: Dale Duster Nova
A 427 equipped '72 Dale Duster sounds late in the game but not imposible?.
See the below Dale Chevy advertisment that's been posted here before...note the Dusters are mentioned in the ad.. Dale Chevy was in the Yenko network too so if you're interested, try the search box here as there should be lots of past threads including some Dale delivered cars also I think pics of plate frames and a Dale dealer emblem?. Re: Dale Duster Nova
Thanks Pete. I'm assuming Dale would install any engine you wanted in a car much like the other more well known super car dealers.

Re: Dale Duster Nova
As of the 1968 model year Chevrolet dealers were no longer free to swap or modify engines.
CDSIB 68-I-4 "Dealer Modification of Air Pollution Control Equipped Motor Vehicles" was sent to all dealers. I'm sure some blew it off but smart dealers knew the consequences. That's probably why Yenko formed Yenko Sportscars Inc and Baldwin Chevrolet had Motion Performance do the mods. Gibb sent cars to Dick Harrell. As for Dale Chevrolet, the only known "Dale Duster" around here [10 miles from Dale] is an Ivy Gold '68 Nova SS that has been red most of its life. Has had a 427 as long as I have known of it. When I was with Camaro Parts Exchange one of our customers claimed to have a white/auto '69 Duster that was little more than a roller. Never saw the car or the paperwork. Dale was a Yenko dealer for the 1970 model year. Yunker in Oconomowoc was the closest for '69. I have said it before but it bears repeating: Dale had a tremendous inventory of HP Chevs: COPOs, L78s, JL-8s, you name it. As for the '72, the claim is hot air until it can be proven. |
Re: Dale Duster Nova
Any more info on the Dale Dusters? I see the old ad isn't clickable, so here's a fresh one.
I also spoke with Bill Dale last evening. He said at their peak, they sold 300 new Corvettes, and 200 used Corvettes in 1969. They also had 50 brand new SS 396 Chevelles on the dealership lot. They also sold two ZL1 Camaro's. http://i62.tinypic.com/205qyqh.png http://i60.tinypic.com/14115xd.png |
Re: Dale Duster Nova
Can someone post the Popular Hot Rodding article?
Thanks, Marty |
Re: Dale Duster Nova
Here's the Dale ad posted previously...again w/ Dusters noted. Love to see any existing Dale cars and/or info also the PHR article too! ~ Pete https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...9064-image.jpg |
Re: Dale Duster Nova
After seeing a display at a car show about what Dale could provide, in 1970 I bought a new 427 Nova at Dale Chevrolet. My trade in was a 1969 Z28. You had to order a 375Hp 396 SS Nova and for another $600 Dale would install the 427. I owned it for 4 years and put on 117,000 miles. It was a no frills light blue sleeper. Over the years I replaced the 4bbl carb with a 2 4bbl tunnel ram and eventually the Corvette Tri Power setup. Needless to say the Nova is fondly remembered. Also Bernie Adams was working at Dale. He was campaigning one of the early Funny Cars...A blown green '64 or '65 Chevelle he called Tyrant,

Re: Dale Duster Nova
Actually Yenko Sportscars was formed fall of 1965 to manufacture and distribute the Yenko Stingers.

Wow and what a first post also welcome aboard Nicky! Any chance you still have any original paperwork from your car or something w/ the Vin? Love to hear more of your 427 Nova also the action around your area back in the day! ~ Pete |
Re: Dale Duster Nova
That is very cool, tell us more about the process - and how you put almost 30k / year on that thing!

Re: Dale Duster Nova
Sorry...no paperwork. At the time muscle cars were common and being a young guy, who thought of keeping any documentation. I think I paid a little over $4000 for it. Four years latter the gas crisis was going strong, I got around 10 or 11 mpg with it, there was 117,000 miles on the odometer, and nobody wanted it for a trade in. I sold it to a buddy? for $300 and he lied about the mileage and resold it for $1700. I sold it with the Corvette tripower on the engine....I've since seen just the air cleaner for the tripower selling for more than I what I got for the car. Back then cruising was the thing to do every night looking for girls or for someone who thought they had a faster car. There were a few Yenkos..Novas and Cameros...around town, Mopar Hemi's and 440's in different body styles, various Boss Mustangs and just about any other super car you could think of were an every night sight. All these years later I still miss those never to be repeated thrilling days. I've since had a couple of street rods and a string of motorcycles but NOTHING equals the excitement of that Nova.

Re: Dale Duster Nova
If you are like me and save all your old receipts you may still have an old registration or insurance card from back in the day. Both will have the VIN on it. Worth a shot.

Cool update Dave and please feel welcome here knowing you're amongst others w/ the same afflictions also dreams of the good old world! Sorry if I missed it but what color was your 427 Nova also the '69 Z-28 you traded in? Also, any chance of old pictures you can share as we love old pictures here! Re: Dale Duster Nova
Light blue, so probably Astro Blue....
|
Re: Dale Duster Nova
The Nova was light blue...the Z28 was Forest Green with white stripes. The Z had 3.73 gears and the low end torque of the high revving 302 didn't make for much of a street car with that gear. I remember waitng 10 months for that Z28 to be delivered after I ordered it. I kept it another 10 months before I bought the 427 Nova. That of course was a GREAT street car. I never took any pictures of the Z much to my regret but I do have many shots of the Nova. They're all old snapshots or slides. I'll try doing some digital conversions for posting. Here's a faded 45 https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...-img_2054z.jpg
year old picture if the posting works. |
Re: Dale Duster Nova
All we did back then was drive...anywhere, any time. Every night, all night it was cruise around town and anywhere else where cool cars, girls, and action (trouble) could be found. And we generally found it. By the way, I also put on 31,000 miles on my '69 Z28 in 10 months. The same explanation applies.

Re: Dale Duster Nova
Damn!! Love that car, everything about it...especially the 427 above the fender marker light and the clear hood scoop!
|
Re: Dale Duster Nova
That's where the term "muscle" comes from!!
|
Re: Dale Duster Nova
I don't know if I have added this pic to the forum as of yet. When my Cortez Silver Yenko Deuce (customized) went to Washington State, here is the 427 that was in it. I used a Vette' 3X2 air cleaner with a plexiglass lid -- open the hood and see six stacks staring at ya' ... combo worked VERY well. My version of a 70's Muscle Car. Re: Dale Duster Nova
Where about did you live? I have a few friends who worked at Dale back in the day. Ironically, one of my stores neighbors the final Dale campus.
Neat stuff so close to home |
Re: Dale Duster Nova
I'm in Hales Corners, Wisconsin...about 10 miles from Waukesha where Dale was in business.
|
Re: Dale Duster Nova
Is that close to Pulaski?
|
Re: Dale Duster Nova
No,Pulaski is due north about 150 miles of Hales Corners.
Even past Green Bay. |
Re: Dale Duster Nova
Is that little clay oval still in business there? Awesome racetrack visited by many of the roundy-round stars. TAZ
|
Re: Dale Duster Nova
The racetrack disappeared about 10 years ago. It was about a half mile from my house. There's a Menard's on the site now. I'd go every Saturday night for the late models and would never miss a sprint car or midget show. In the pre-noise restriction days the sounds would rattle the windows and the dust wouild float by. Housing development put an end to those glorious days.

Re: Dale Duster Nova
Dang it -- that track was of Southern Wisconsins best racing venues. You can throw Slinger in that mix too. I was born and raised in Shawano and the track at the fairgrounds still fills the stands when racing is in session. Those folks believe in "Dirt’s for racin' ... asphalt for getting there". TAZ

Re: Dale Duster Nova
Yep, Hales Corners Speedway, watched lots of demo derbies there as a kid.
|
Re: Dale Duster Nova
Remember Crazy Jim's annual Labor Day Demo Derby? Hales Corners Speedway also held tractor pulls, motorcycle races (the concrete wall was unforgiving...one racer lost his life there) and snowmobile races.

Re: Dale Duster Nova
Yep! Crazy Jim. Didn't Crazy Jim also have a used car lot on 27th street? All my friends bought their high school beaters from that place, and none of them was more than $500. Good times.
|
Re: Dale Duster Nova
Yes he owned Crazy Jim Motors. Home of quality(??) used cars. A colorful character to say the least. His name was Jim Groh...until he legally changed it to Crazy Jim. He also ran for Governor of the great state of Wisconsin...and lost. He was a player in Las Vegas...and got stabbed there over some disagreement. He certainly marched to the beat of a different drum.
|
Re: Dale Duster Nova
The cars were super sketchy for sure. A buddy of mine bought an old Malibu with literally no frame behind the rear axle. None. He didn't even notice until I pointed it out.
|
Re: Dale Duster Nova
Back in my High School days (early 70'S) Crazy Jim's lot was on 16th Street between National and Greenfield. Earl Scheib was just down the block.
