looking for pics
I am currently seeking pics of the 2 GM ZL1 camaro ''show cars'' there were built in 1969. I have seen a few pics of a black one with gold stripes. Any pics would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: looking for pics
Yes that would be the car. I have read that a few people have built tribute cars. Are any of them members of this forum?
I have collected several grainy pics of what I believe to be the original car. I am really looking for some clear, clean shots of the front and of the wheels that were used. http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/f...aro/e21d_1.jpg http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/f...aro/dfed_1.jpg http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/f...aro/8056_1.jpg |
Re: looking for pics
I believe that the Tribute car that was displayed at MCACN two years ago will be living in Austin soon.

Re: looking for pics
I know the sole builder of the tribute cars that does have some technical docs on the car. I have visited him and seen him in process of building the tribute car. To the best of my knowledge 4 cars have been built to date as a tribute to the ZL1 show car prototype. Of these 4 cars that have been built only 1 has been built to the exact specs that he has for tribute - the others have has subtle changes in regards to drivetrain or appearance.

Al W. built a tribute over 10 years ago, including the front spoiler (not in pic though). He got docs from Porterfield.
I saw him several years ago when he moved local, haven't seen him since. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbt...ic Als ZL1.jpg |
Re: looking for pics
If this vehicle went into fleet use later, someone must have the vin# on a document. That would be one hell of a car to find parked in an ex-gm engineers garage.

Re: looking for pics
Take this with a grain of salt.
We vended at the Chevy Tech Center Show about 1984. Vendors had a meet 'n greet with a Chevy Stylist. Of course I asked him about the ZL-1 show car. He *thought* it had been sold as a rolling chassis to someone there who made a race car out of it. The engine went into the '70 Camaro ZL-1 show car; it was updated to '78 or so apperance later on. GM Styling head Bill Mitchell was given the car. His family subsequently sold it after he passed. Smokey Yunick was a Chevy insider in those days-except in styling. In his book he states that those areas were under constant guard, very limited access. No one came & went casually. Point being few people had knowledge of or access to that car. The '69 Camaro ZL-1 show car could very easily still exist in unrecognizable form. |
Re: looking for pics
Now correct me if I'm wrong here, but I thought I read a long time ago that this Black-'n-Gold '69 ZL-1 Camaro was a prototype for a new, proposed model that came very close to a production car. The sixty-nine previouly produced ZL-1 Camaros were obviously race cars with their 12.5 Compression, .600 lift camshaft, and 850 double pumpers while this proposed model was going to be a more streetable version with 11.00 Compression, smaller camshaft and 780 Vacuum Secondary all packaged up in a nicer looking car that was striped & spoiler'ed up a bit to distinguish it from your average-looking ZL-1 Camaro that looked like a 6-cylinder car at a glance.

Re: looking for pics
More completely unverified details in regards to the proto-type ZL1 car(s). During discussions with someone that has a little bit of knowledge and does seem to have some technical data on this car, I was told that (2) cars were produced. From this it is thought that one was destroyed and that one may have moved on to the ranks of executive or VIP brass.
From what I have been told, these (100) cars were intended to more consumer (street worthy) versions of the original (69) cars that were produced. I think the details relating to these proto-type cars is just as undocumented as the 1969 ZL1 Corvette. What was once thought to be (1) car, then (2) and as of late of have heard up to (6) cars. Someone somewhere knows about these cars - unfortunately those people might sadly be pushing up daisies. |
Re: looking for pics
Todd, is your post aimed at me or somebody else's? You're saying the same thing that I did about them being "intended to more consumer (street worthy) versions of the original (69) cars that were produced".

Mark,
My apologies - I was just trying to preface the comments that I was about to make but can see how my wording made it appear to reference earlier posted comments. |
