My '69 Z28 Find

Hi Guys,

A few people know from following my Facebook page that I was recently turned onto a fantastic '69 Z28. I owe the lead to Jeff Boone (69L78 here). I thank him for his enthusiasm. He is true good-nature hobbyist! I had Jeff inspect the car Monday and Wednesday I drove truck and trailer to purchase the car. Ok... onto the Z.

Very early 1969 Z28. Very rare "M" code block, original motor, trans, rear, heads, carb, 837 alt, 9204 master, power steering, flat hood, console, no gauges, 729 interior (deluxe with woodgrain), late '68 dated seat belts, white houndstooth, pre-x code tag but has "X3" on the bulk head, even has the original smog system (pump, hoses, inlets, diverter valve, check value and all hardware) sitting in a box for reinstall too. Will need 1/4's later on + a trunk floor and of course a restoration but as we begin to bring the car back to road-worthy condition, I'm continuously impressed by the car's refreshing original state.

Plans for it now include a thorough cleaning, dusting, new carpet, belts, hoses, fluids, plugs, wires, shifter rebuild, t handle, sun tach, traction bars, a good set of shocks, and tires. When all that is done, she'll get some new front end bushings and a wheel alignment because I need a driver! The car was authenticated by Jerry MacNeish too.

Onto the photos... Have a nice night.

Thanks,
Dan

Score of the evening!

The car had no paperwork present during the time of the sale but was convinced something would turn up when we took apart the interior for cleaning and carpet. Sure enough, the broadcast sheet for the car was under the driver's footwell area.

Items include dealer 218 - zone 10, tag matching 158440 Norwood #, 729 trim, 71-71 paint, DZ motor... Does anyone know about the "XF" trans? I know its the original M21.

And finally with the original hood on it

Maybe I'll get around to washing it tomorrow?

Thanks for looking.

Boy o boy looks like you saved the broadcast sheet just in time. Have you tried turning over the engine yet?

Frank, sorry Dan did not say - motor pulls strong, runs very well! Healthy too, chirped the tires with ease...

Car was in Hanover, PA for about 7 years with the previous owner. He drove it about 150 miles in that time period. The owner before him had it since his return from Vietnam - 1972 or so is when he bought it. He was also from that area. We have his contact information but will wait until we can send him him a nice written letter with photos of the car before reaching out.

More photos to come later today!

Re: My '69 Z28 Find

What a score with my favorite interior color. After seeing so many restored Z/28s it is so refreshing to see a flat hood original car. Is this car exceptional or did most most original Camaros have this good of panel alignment from the factory? I would do what ever I could to save those fenders because you are not going to get that great of a fit even with NOS fenders.

very cool car! I did not think norwood cars even had build sheets. Most of the unrestored camaros I have seen have a bigger than normal gap between the front fender and the leading edge of the door, and when restored that gap is reduced.

Re: My '69 Z28 Find

It is a 386 block with a casting date of M34. I believe if you go to the Camaro.net website there is some research done that explains the M coded block.

Re: My '69 Z28 Find

Thanks a lot guys!

No spoiler, flat hood. The rear spoiler was added (not by me). I will not be putting a cowl hood on the car. It was there was I purchased it. The original flat hood is here to stay.

Thanks,
Dan

<span style="font-weight: bold">From the CRG on the M Code Block:
&quot;M&quot;-Coded Blocks
There is one exception to this convention that has been observed: some blocks have been seen with &quot;M&quot; cast codes. Research by the Saginaw Metal Casting Operations of GM Powertrain Division has found that these &quot;M&quot; codes are not date codes, but actually a foundry code used to indentify parts that were made to evaluate a casting process change. After evaluating the parts, the blocks would either be destroyed or released into production. There is no way to determine the date an &quot;M&quot;-coded block was poured. </span>

way to go dan! great find. take alot of pictures. love those flat hood cars. the first thing i did when i bought my z-28 in 1978 was to go to chevrolet and buy a cowl hood. it was on the car until 2002 when i realized how great they look with the flat hood!

That's not the broadcast sheet. That's the IBM computer card - don't see them very often.
Zone 10 is Colorado. Don't know the dealer.
XF is an M21.

Congrats!

Hey Dan and Dave,

Great find and Great choice on the NOS sheetmetal. I would also look for a good rust free floor from a donor car The repro floors don’t have all the right indents, creases, wrinkles and bracket impressions that the factory floors do. This way you can butt weld the repair sections in. An original car like this deserves that.
