Al Maynard died yesterday. He will be missed by the many car clubs/organizations that he was affiliated with in the Detroit area. If you needed a part for a Chevy and nobody else had one, you could always count on Al to have one or know where you could get it.......RIP Al

Wow..what a shame....I used to stop by his tent a Carlisle every year just to see all the stuff he brought...and he never even brought the really coolest stuff he had...R.I.P

Very sad news. I just saw him at the St. Johns Concourse this Summer. He was pretty sick, but couldn't stay away from the cars. Good man.

I also believe he ran a fast camaro in the Gas Classes too. He was a great competitor!! Hate to lose these old timers. Can't replace them. They all do leave their mark on the sport of drag racing.

Al was one of the best. I'll really miss him. He was a good guy I was proud to call friend. R.I.P. buddy.

We met at Classic Motors in Chicago in 1977 when he came down to look at a 1957 Chev 2-door wagon, 283/283/C-R 3-speed with 2200 miles if I remember correctly. We have been friends ever since. He loved going over to the Cape and hanging with you guys. Used to tell me about those trips all the time. Al has run thru more rare muscle and HP parts than probably any one guy on earth. That hat of his that he wore at every Carlisle I ever went to should be bronzed. R.I.P. Al, a whole bunch of us will miss you........Bill S

Truly a great car guy and just a really good guy. I was overwhelmed by the mass of parts in his &quot;garage&quot; and all the stuff in his basement and storage building. Don't know how he kept track of it but seemed to know where everything was. He will be missed by many.

Al was indeed a car guy to the bone and his collection of parts was nothing short of incredible and as stated, the list of rare muscle cars that he owned over the years would just blow you away. I had the pleasure of working with Al on the Detroit Autorama judging staff also for many years.

</div></div>I sure can, and Bill S. you made me laugh, as the first time I ever visited Al's place he took me and my dad around his property and I clearly remember my dad saying I'm not going in there! regarding that outbuilding with all that heavy cast iron in there.

I really liked Al. I met him in the early 70s at Kustom Equipment, here in Flint. I was at his place a few years back buying parts for my 70 Z28 and took some pics of the 68 Z28 Camaro convert that was built for Pete Estes. He had a butternut 67 Z at the same time. He was an avid gun collector too. He showed me a pistol that he said is the one that killed Pres Lincoln.Like was already said, his basement is chocked full of treasures. I'm going to miss him.

I met Al at the World of Wheels car show in Chicago in the early 80`s. He was judging my 69 Camaro pace car. After the show he asked if I would be interested in selling the car? I did end up selling him the car and delivered it to his house after showing it at the GM tech center. I also got the unbelievable car and parts tourat his house. We`ve stayed in touch ever since. I will miss him and that eye ring of his. George

I am so heartbroken to see this thread!!!!

Al was a gentleman and he had so many stories.I will miss him......

I wish his family all the love they need to get through this.His wife is also a sweatheart.....

All --

Many of you may not know that Al's daughter Andrea Brenner (my sister) is currently fighting Grade 4 Glioblastoma Multiforme brain cancer that was diagnosed in January. She has exhausted all of the traditional treatments and is going this Monday to start an experimental treatment in Houston, TX that we hope will work for her.

Unfortunately, her treatment up to this point has left us in debt and this experimental treatment is expected to cost us $65,000 a year in addition to what insurance will cover. So, I've set up a web site to help take donations towards her treatment.

I know times are really tough right now, but my sister is facing some of the toughest. If you can afford to donate, whatever the amount, it will really help us out.

Al had the best of the best including the 68 Z28 convertible. The gun he had did not kill Abe Lincoln, it belonged to him. he did have the derringer that belonged to Doc Holiday with documentation, doc paid for his funeral with it.The Gun was inscribed to Doc from Kate on the handle. I wonder if there would have been so much skeptisism many years ago if everyone knew the black l79 Nova with 151 miles on it belonged to Al when Motown was brokering it for him.... He will truly be missed.
