1970 aluminum slotted wheel questions
I am going to be looking for a 1970 vintage aluminum slotted wheel 14X? for GM. Probably were 14x7. If I recall they were Hansen or American Racing wheels. I want to stay period correct.
So the post is to get your knowledge to help me figure out how to identify the correct wheels. So please help me figure out what to look for and where to get a set of four for my car. I will be at the famous Pomona Swap in California on December 4th and once I know what to look for may find a set at the meet. Thanks Lee |
Re: 1970 aluminum slotted wheel questions
Lee, did you happen to look at the "Vintage Wheel" topic under this forum? I'm not being smart. Sometimes it can be a little tricky following threads in here. Some members also comment on the style of wheels they have for their cars under the Day-2 thread as well. Most guys are running Ansen slotted mags with much success as far as period correct is concerned.

Re: 1970 aluminum slotted wheel questions
I will check it out but may need you to direct me to that forum. Ansen........ahhhh not Hansen. Thanks

Re: 1970 aluminum slotted wheel questions
No problem Lee! What kind of car are you "Day-2ing"?
|
Re: 1970 aluminum slotted wheel questions
The wheel thread in called Vintage Wheels under technical and restoration. And then there is a whole forum under Day-2 and modified stuff. That's where you will see a lot of cool cars.

Re: 1970 aluminum slotted wheel questions
An old convertible I just finished restoring a 1970 olds 442, picture can be seen on the restoration site where the car was done. Picture is dated 4-70 one month after the car was purchased. Would like to get a set of the wheels the original owner bought. Lee

I would try to buy a set of 4 matching wheels-either from ebay or a private owner. All wheel companies made changes to the wheels during a run. Sometimes the outer lip is a different shape, lug nut area ids different etc. You might find 2 wheels but might not find another 2 that match. Might even consider a company like akh wheels but they are expensive. |
Re: 1970 aluminum slotted wheel questions
Question of the year 2 experts. What would qualify and what would not for year two. I have a high resolution picture of my car in 1970 and I could blow up the wheel. They look polished in the pictures.

Re: 1970 aluminum slotted wheel questions
Lee, welcome and I love the day 2/ period correct speed parts theme. Do us all a favor and fill out your profile a bit more. We all like to know who we are talking to, and I think you'll find it to be worth it.
Lots of things were regional so let us know some of those details where the car was originally form and where you are. http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/e...R_Ansen101.jpg more info to read here: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/s...&showall=1 http://www.roadsters.com/wheels/#ARH |
Re: 1970 aluminum slotted wheel questions
That site is very good and my head is now spinning. Lots of good information. Ansen had some competition by 1970. My car is a fully documented olds 442 w-30 convertible ordered with poverty caps. The car just debuted at the MCACN show in Rosemont. One month after it was ordered the first owner replaced the rims with the slotted mags. The car was delivered in California March 1970 so it looks like Ansen would be the first choice but the other brands would be correct too. Got this below from the site you provided.
All the early Slots had the bolt on caps till about 1970 depending on brand, Ansen in the 70s offered both bolt on and a metal pop-in on their Sprint IIs, also Ansen offered them polished and in direct bolt and a mult-pattern in the 70s |

Lee </div></div> Original direct bolt pattern Ansens were not polished but only came in a machine finish. The Ansen Sprint II which were unilug came out polished I think they came out in 1970/1971. Post a larger pic of your car and we might be able to tell by looking at the cap for sure. It appears the cap has a black center and with them being polished would lead to them being the Ansen Sprint II. No other wheel that I can recall had a black face center cap. ET's had dark green but I can tell by the pics they re not ET's. Sam Griffith has them on his Yenko Deuce. This 57 has Ansen Sprint II on it and on the side view looks like your wheels. http://i1116.photobucket.com/albums/...day2swirls.jpg |

Here are the vintage photos from April 1970 car delivered to the first owner march 1970 so he probably didn't keep the poverty caps on for a week or two.

Re: 1970 aluminum slotted wheel questions
Man that is a nice car!

Re: 1970 aluminum slotted wheel questions
It is a 4 speed, w-27 car ordered with the aluminum center section rear end. We are really having fun with it now that it is restored after owning it for 35 years.

The wheels appear to be Appliance mags-with the better up close photo can tell by Appliances peculiar low profile kidney bean shaped holes and the indented center cap. They also had the black center cap as well....forgot about those. The center cap has a giant "A" in the center and many mistakingly call them Ansens. Appliance mags are plentiful especially in the 14 x7 size-most popular size and they came either polished or unpolished. |
Re: 1970 aluminum slotted wheel questions
I found some caps on ebay. Are these correct? 380258570611 Thanks for your help. I am now on the hunt for appliance 14X7s.

Re: 1970 aluminum slotted wheel questions

The caps are metal and based upon the picture they are the early Appliance because of the very rounded curvature lip of the caps. Later Appliance had a sharper lip. I had a set of these a few years back but sold them..I will try to find the pics. Here are the earlier ones you can tell they match the caps in the side profile shot of your car. http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/attac...mp;d=1310423299 |
Re: 1970 aluminum slotted wheel questions
360260786413 You can find almost anything on ebay. I see the indent on the caps.

Lee </div></div> Lee those caps are not correct. Looks like they are for a r/v/truck mag wheel. See the pic I posted above. |

Lee </div></div> Lee, those would work if you find them but they are the later style with the sharper outer edge I referred to earlier. Yours had the earlier rounded edge I posted above in a pic. |
Re: 1970 aluminum slotted wheel questions
220897798996 here are some new bolt on. Different style. I guess I better find the rims before I worry about the centers.

Re: 1970 aluminum slotted wheel questions
Here is an Appliance mag with the later style sharper edge cap. You can note the low profile kidney bean shaped slot holes.
Appliance had large lug recesses but had a special lug that fill up that void and they were extra long on the hex head portion of the lug so they stuck out and looked like a regular mag wheel once installed. The problem you will find is these Appliance lugs are extinct/obsolete. You can use a standard mag lug that are available today but they don't fill the hole right and just poke out of the lug hole just slightly and it looks odd...one reason today Appliance mags are not real sought after. People know something is just not right when they look at them with the newer lugs. The wheels and caps are plentiful and cheap due to the lug nut dilemna. That is a shame too because Appliance mags were one of the better wheels made and used high quality aluminum http://media.photobucket.com/image/a.../Photo0113.jpg |
Re: 1970 aluminum slotted wheel questions
Whitetop......what is your name? I could not have paid for a more knowledgeable person on these rims. Looks like I will go to a plan B rim unless I can find a complete set with lugs. I love this site and probably could have used some of the brain power when I was restoring my w-30 olds.
|
Re: 1970 aluminum slotted wheel questions
The last set I had said Appliance, Van Nuys, Ca cast right in the back.
I think I have some of the lugs you are talking about. Real big hex head on them? |

I think a set of 14 x7 Americans or Ansens would look fine on your car. I had a set of Appliance 14 x7's on ebay at one time for something like $60 with no takers. Ended up selling the caps to an ebay guy who PM me after the auction and the wheels went in a local free bee newspaper and the guy bought them for a utility trailer he was making. |
Re: 1970 aluminum slotted wheel questions
LeeP, your car turned out great. Hope you can find a set of wheels. They look right at home in the those pictures.
Ray |
Re: 1970 aluminum slotted wheel questions
Thanks Ray I am guessing you had one of those great LS6s in the chevelle row: Did you see it at MCACN.
The rims were made in Van Nuys. I wonder if Rug went to the factory to pick them up. The days of buy American (actually Appliance). The cool thing about this thread is that I have completed more research on making my w-30 one of the most correct restorations possible. So I now know what rims Rug the original owner bought for the car. During the restoration, the classic oldsmobile site saved me making a mistake on the replacement of my aluminum w-27 rear end cover. Mine had a fin ground off and the restoration shop thought it was junk. Turned out one of the experts on the w-27 rear end found a technical bulletin for California only emission vehicles. So 49 states did not have the fin ground off. California cars in 1970 w-30s had a different gas tank, extra fuel line and emission canister. Saved the cover and was able to document the ground off fin. Lee |
Re: 1970 aluminum slotted wheel questions
Lee - fine Olds you have there. Have you looked at AKH yet? He is expensive but comes up with some rare and desireable stuff. Good luck.
|
Re: 1970 aluminum slotted wheel questions
When I was on the xt wheel search I tried him. Try to find five date coded xt wheels anywhere. Was too bad the olds shared those with the copo cars. Nobody ever advertised them as olds wheels.
I looked on the site and he did not have what I needed. I may have to settle for period correct instead of Appliance. Rug the original owner died a few years ago and wouldn't mind if the brand was off but the car had the same look. Lee |
Re: 1970 aluminum slotted wheel questions
Where there is a a will......
If you are not in a hurry I am confident you can track down what you want. Anyway to verify with original owner/family that Appliance is what you are looking for? |
Re: 1970 aluminum slotted wheel questions
I cannot contact the family and Rug the original owner is deceased. I am going to have to say whitetop has presented strong evidence they were Appliance. I will be going out to a wheel shop next week and attending the pomona swap meet in search of a nice set of wheels. My only goal now is to make sure I qualify for a day two by getting the correct era vintage wheels.

Re: 1970 aluminum slotted wheel questions
Lee,
If Pomona does not produce a set of wheels, I have these 14x7 Ansens up here in Santa Cruz. Re: 1970 aluminum slotted wheel questions
Could someone please tell me if the ansen could be ordered polished? If so I would be interested.

I will never understand why people do some of the things they do. here is one of the wheels. I stuck them all in extra boxes I had.
