My "Day 2" 1968 Camaro find & purchase
So I have been chasing this car for the past 10 years. Its a 1968 Camaro. Appears to be an original 327 4 speed car that was blue-blue. The guy I purchased it from had it on the road the last time in 1980 and it has sat in the same spot ever since. It was a worked LS7 454 powered, M22, 12 bolt with 5.13's. Engine and trans are gone. Has home made ladder bars, Lakewood 3 point, super shifter, Hurst line lock, tach drive SW tach, NMW tow tabs, lots of front end tricks, and other cool stuff. He claimed it went 10.30's @ 130mph. I finally got him to get off the car. Surprisingly, the car is very solid underneath. Here are some pics. Special thanks to John (C1SS396) and my Dad for all the help getting it home today.

Looks like a fun project you got there. No NMW tow hub used for the ride home?

Re: My "Day 2" 1968 Camaro find & purchase
I brought them with me just in case I needed them if the rear drums were stuck. Didn't use them though.

That is KILLER! I love old untouched drag cars.
|
Re: My "Day 2" 1968 Camaro find & purchase
What kind of wheels were on it?? Looks like steel wheels on the slicks due to the rust??
|
Re: My "Day 2" 1968 Camaro find & purchase
The old slicks were mounted on 8" Corvette rally wheels. Don't know what it had for front runners. I'll ask him when I go back.

It was an Atco car. He also used to street race it on all the old south jersey spots that were hot back in the 1970's. |

Re: My "Day 2" 1968 Camaro find & purchase
What made the guy Sell the Car to You In that 10 year time span,Did you become friends with the owner of the car?I must say that Camaro has a LOT of potential,As soon as I saw them chains in Front-I could tell that was a Fast Car in its day-It would be cool if the owner could gather up some older photos and some Street Race stories-Very Cool Score on your Part,Are you gonna build it As it was or do your own thing to the car?Cant wait to see progress Pic's..

Re: My "Day 2" 1968 Camaro find & purchase
I agree, some neat stuff to look at on how the car was set-up. As for the last part of yoru comment, am I the only one thinking it or somehow- nevermind thanks for sharing the pics and look forward to the stories.

Re: My "Day 2" 1968 Camaro find & purchase
The car has a lot of surface rust on the suspension parts but is surprisingly solid underneath. It was undercoated since new. Frame rails, shock mounts, torque box areas, front subrame, cowl and windshield area, rockers, braces, etc are all rock solid. Typical fender, door and quarter panel rust and the driver's side footwell has two small holes.

When I was in the area I would randomly stop by and ask about the car since I knew about it. He would tell me some stories now and then. He was going to use the 12 bolt rear out of it for a 1970 Nova he had but he sold that since he damaged it trying to put it up on some wire spools with a bucket loader. A young lady also came outside and was glad that someone was interested in getting the "junk" out the yard. I also bought a 1969 B-Body Dana 60 from him on my visit 2 years ago which softened him up. To be honest, I am not going to build it. It was a cool car and I hated seeing it sit so I had to save it before it wasn't worth saving at all. It would make an excellent and cool project for someone. -Matt |
Re: My "Day 2" 1968 Camaro find & purchase
It seems like old race cars Come back to life,That camaro would be Perfect to Build up "Street Racer" style-it has a history of it and some old school modifications already done to it,If you could get some pic's of the car in its Glory-that would be iceing on the cake......

Re: My "Day 2" 1968 Camaro find & purchase
In the close up shot of the 12 bolt, it appears that the pass. side frame rail is split / rotted? Or is it the picture?

That is a piece of undercoat that has flaked off. The paint underneath is glossy. -Matt |

Re: My "Day 2" 1968 Camaro find & purchase
Interesting update. This car just came back to me yesterday. It's changed hands 2 times since I've sold it. A lot of the cool parts are missing but still has the tow tabs, the 12 Bolt, and the whole stick setup. I bought it cheaper this time than I originally did the first time. The first pic is how it left me. The rest is how I just got it back.
