Huge changes for me, please read
As some of you already know, Rachel and I have been taking care of my ailing father for quite some time now. On March 20, dad took a fall in the parking lot at his doctors office and broke his hip in the process. He had surgery the next morning and the doctors were able to repair his hip. After a few more days in the hospital he was released to go to short term physical therapy. We picked him up and brought him home from therapy this evening.
While his recovery from the fall is progressing well, other aspects of his health are fading rather rapidly. As a result, dad is now living with Rachel and I full-time and we are caring for him on a 24/7 basis now. I will still be able to keep the business going for the foreseeable future, but things may slow down a bit more than they are now, so please try to bear with me, I'll keep things moving as well as I can as I try to make the best of this situation. Your patience and understanding would be immensely appreciated. As of now this situation is indefinite, I will post updates as appropriate. Eric |

Eric, sorry to hear of your Dads problems. I hope he gets better. It is great that he has you to come to his aid. Please let me know if I can help out. I have time available on weekends if I can run some errands or help out around the shop. Best wishes!

To many of us, our dad's are our best friends so take care of him.

Re: Huge changes for me, please read
You have been caring for your dad and going to great lengths for some time to help him out. We have talked about it many times and it is great what you are doing for him especially considering the past. You are a stand up guy and it is worth it for our dads. Wish I still had mine with us. Holler if we can help in any way.

Re: Huge changes for me, please read
We had both of my wifes parents in the house for 2 years. Her dad was a real challenge with Parkinsons and a nasty disposition. It was very tough at times and especially difficult for the kids. Looking back I would not change the decision we made to bring them here. It was the right thing to do for our family and it sent a message to our kids that we do what we need to do for those that took care of us.
Best wishes from our family to yours. |

Amen Sir. I've been in your situation Eric. You're doing the right thing and you'll be rewarded for it. As you can see from Sam's generous and sincere offer, the people here care about, and FOR each other. You're one of the true 'Good Guys' in the hobby and on this site. Do what you need to do and your business will survive, .... and most likely prosper. Prayers to you and your family. |
Re: Huge changes for me, please read
You do what you need to do Eric. Family is #1. Carbs can wait. Best wishes to you, your Dad and family. We'll be right here...

Enjoy the time you have left with your parents, everything else can wait. Good luck to you

Re: Huge changes for me, please read
Eric, I know what you're going through. I moved my mom from Chicago to Austin in January of 2011 and she's had many hospital visits. She fell and broke her hip last may and she recovered well. She's 93 now and she keeps bouncing back from every fall and illness. She keeps telling me she's "ready to go".
Hang in there. |

Been there, done this. Sully beat me to saying the above. We'll be thinking about you Eric! |
Re: Huge changes for me, please read
Just a brief update:
We're gradually beginning to establish something resembling a routine, but there's still a long ways to go. Hopefully things will improve more during PT/OT, but the onus lies with dad at this point. There is all kinds of help at his disposal, but there is also a considerable amount of resistance to said help as well...but that's nothing new with him. Rachel and I are getting things scheduled so I can get back out in the shop and get some work done, so that situation has already improved. I'm actually caught up on customer's carb work right now, so I'm hoping to get back onto a couple of those "special projects" I've been working on for a while now. Hopefully I'll have some interesting updates soon. |
Re: Huge changes for me, please read
Good news Eric. Wanna meet up at the Tuesday car show out your way?
|
Re: Huge changes for me, please read
Sam;
I'm actually trying to figure out a way to do just that--but I need to find someone to "babysit" dad as he can not be left alone. I haven't come up with any solutions yet, but I'm trying. |
Re: Huge changes for me, please read
Wanted to post a quick update;
Things have managed to settle into a reasonably workable routine at this point. Dad has made about as much of a (physical) recovery at this point that the doctors and physical therapists seem to think he's going to make. Now we see how long we (/he) can at least hold this ground. Business-wise everything is good to go now, and my work schedule is wide open. One of my projects is nearing fruition, and I'm hoping to have the other moving again when the first one is done. |

Re: Huge changes for me, please read
Eric, just saw this. Hang in there.
My Mom passed a few years ago suddenly, and my Dad and I were always more like friends, now I work even harder to be there for him. We even got him an old VW beetle and are fixing it up together (he always wanted one). You are a good man and a good son. I am glad things are smoothing out a little for you too. Joe |
Re: Huge changes for me, please read
Reminder......if you have a carb that needs rebuilding, send it to one of the best. We need to support our members and sponsors and Eric has always been great to work with. Working on the carbs gives him a little break from the many hours of care giving he is doing. Hang in there Eric.

Re: Huge changes for me, please read
eric, hang in there. Its good to see so many actually taking their parents in. I have my 93 yr old mom, slowly transitioning on staying here with us versus living alone in her house. would not have it any other way.
Next yr its likely full time. if I need a carb rebuilt, I would definitely send it your way. -bob |
