Wow, I stumbled upon this video myself yesterday and was just blown away by it. It's great and extremely well done. Every town had it's "Milner" and this is the typical story of one of them.

Yes it was.Ford originaly campaigned the car with a 428 CJ.It was quick on the street but with the 428 at the track it was one BMF.Some of the comments under the video are total BS.
Check Keith Tedford's post with a pic of the car when it was a race car.

Re: Toronto.Harveys 1979.On the street.

Those were the good old days,
Harvey's Burger place near the corner of Jane + Keele and from there we went to the corner of Finch and Weston (Canadian Tire Parking Lot).
Both location were near the highway 400 exit with very low population back then, lots of races were done on highway 400 until the cops shut everyone down after cathing on.
I had a Fathom Blue with White stripes 1970 Chevelle SS396 for 13 years back in those days.
Lots of good memories

Re: Toronto.Harveys 1979.On the street.

I was recently contacted by Pete Stillman. He was the driver of the Camaro. He told me the vid appears so professional for back in 79 because it was a university project. They used a lot of film to make it right. He was talking to Dieter recently.Dieter sold the car to some kid and he parked it on some frontyard in Brampton. This guy from Orillia or Barrie who works at a Ford dealer bought it for 2500.oo and it now has a built big block in it ...the guy who owns it now will not sell it.

(quote).."Great stories, pics and thread PJ...more, more!.

I heard many tales of Harvey's and this era cars over the years...nice to see and hear more facts of what was going on only an hour or so away from where I was growing up!.

On a sadder note, the area being discussed isn't far from where the Golden Horseshoe Dragway was and the location of Dick Harrell's fatal accident in Sept. '71..
Pete".. (quote)

Could someone try and give me an idea of where this 'Golden Horseshoe Dragway' was located?
I recall going to some races in the late '60's early 70's, with my cousin who lived then in Georgetown (I guess Halton now) and it seemed a lot closer to get to from his place than Cayuga would have..
I was always wondering where we had attended the races and now after hearing this was wondering if this could be where we went. If so any idea where is exactly was and for how long it operated?
Thanks for any info - sorry for the HiJack somewhat - Randy

Re: Toronto.Harveys 1979.On the street.

Thanks Zig - I knew it seemed a lot closer than Cayuga - rightly so I guess..
Any idea how long it was open and running and the reason why, if other than being squeezed out by housing and development, it was shut down?
Just there the once - but I seem to recall seating down just one side, but it appeared to be a decent venue..

I think the track was open for 5-6 years. It changed hands a couple of times. After the track closed we would pull the barriers aside and race on weekends. They finally used a grader to carve up the track.
Here is a shot of my Vega running the "Polar Express" on one of those secial days.As you can tell I was already off the mark as the Nova was sleeping. This is real "arm drop" racing. It's a poor pic but you can see a number of spectaters holding a beer.

Re: Toronto.Harveys 1979.On the street.

Too bad - wish there was a strip near Toronto still - but I'm guessing that is what in the end determined the fate of this one, considering especially how much the city has grown Westward..
I did try a Google Earth search of the area to see where it might possibly have been located - but it appears that they obliterated any remnants of it well, as nothing jumps out now as having been a possible site.
I have a few friends who travel down to Cayuga and London to race but with the price of fuel and time it takes to get there from N. Ontario it becomes a very hard deal to do on a regular basis and only for the 'well heeled'..
We need a strip up North here and there is one sort of 'in the works' but these days $$'s are hard to free up from even the most sympathetic of donors and supporters..
Thanks - Randy

Re: Toronto.Harveys 1979.On the street.

That COPO looks familiar Barry. What colour was the interior?
Funny story.I remember being at the track one night.I was up in the tower talking to the owner and I saw this gold Camaro coming up to the line.I had seen this car earlier in the pits and the guy was borrowing a set of 9 x 28 slicks from a friend who had an LS6 Chevelle. He had already made a couple of passes with the Camaro and it was having trouble getting off the line as the tires were too much for the car.It was a 4 speed and no matter how hard he came out,it would bog.I remember looking down on the car from the tower. It was dark. The lights came down and the Camaro guy drops the clutch at hi revs. The car bogged so bad that the alternater light came on and I could see it from the tower.LOL.
Another time a guy in a Chevelle blew his clutch and pieces of debri actually hit the glass in the tower.I guess he didn't have a shield.:o.
Cars in those days with a 4 speed and slicks would break on a regular bassis.I had a 65 Chevelle with a done 327,4 speed and 4:88s.The car only ran 12.90s but it left real hard with 26 x 10 slicks and the 4:88s.I would actually drive the car to Georgetown as Cayuga was all highway and too far for those gears.Driving along #7 to Georgetown was NP.I broke the rear end one day as I had a spacer plate on my crown gear and sheared all the bolts off when I left too hard.We had no trailer so a friend flat towed me home in his Biscayne.I forgot my tow rope and all I had was a light weight dog chain. The chain was about 12' long when we left the track. The chain was not strong enough to pull a car so we had to take it easy.We were pretty good at flat towing in those days and the right 2 guys could pull a car anywhere as long as they were insink. We still broke the chain about 5 times on the way home and just tied it back together.By the time we got home the chain was about 2' long.Too funny.
Rant over.

Re: Toronto.Harveys 1979.On the street.

OK guys lets set the record straight
with respect to the fastest car at Harveys.
It was in my opinion Weston High Performances racing club, with their sponsored
1953 327 Hilborne injected, tubbed. M.G.It ran in the 9s.Was fitted with the first
Bob Speck turbo hydromatic trany.
One night Weston High performance ran the Shakers club
hottest car for money collected from patrons of Harveys
Jane and 401, a 1963 impala 409 done to the T---s.
Winner take all.
After dodging the cops a few nights we finally raced
on the 400 HWY just north of the Sheppard bridge.
We gave them 10 car lenghts and smoked them.
They had to weld their door shut.
No one I mean no one could beat the MG.
If I find the pics when I get home I will post them
PJ
