Bid to $450K. No sale. Were any of those bids real?

Re: Carolina Blue 1969 Camaro Z/28 @ Mecum Auctions
I believe they were real! I've never seen another '69 Z like that one before!

Wow... 1. Why so much for a special order color? 2. Why not take it? |
Re: Carolina Blue 1969 Camaro Z/28 @ Mecum Auctions
Have a hard time believing 450 won't buy that car.
|
Re: Carolina Blue 1969 Camaro Z/28 @ Mecum Auctions
I don't get it either. Every time I run into a car for sale that's similar to that color people hate it and they are hard sells. Something has to be fishy here. 450 buys you a killer yenko.

Re: Carolina Blue 1969 Camaro Z/28 @ Mecum Auctions
450k and did not sell it?? hard to believe
|
Re: Carolina Blue 1969 Camaro Z/28 @ Mecum Auctions
Remember that in the consignment contract, the auction house has the right to bid the car up on their own, to just under the reserve, hoping a real buyer will step in and bid to get it over the reserve. Obviously the reserve was $460k.

That practice always seemed deceptive and unscrupulous to me. |
Re: Carolina Blue 1969 Camaro Z/28 @ Mecum Auctions
That (Z) is Dana's Mecums personal car.My guess,he never had any intension on selling.I would have taken the money and run also.Way to much money for a crossram Z/28...

Shoulda woulda coulda.

Re: Carolina Blue 1969 Camaro Z/28 @ Mecum Auctions
If it really is for sale,I'm guessing Dana didn't take it because the top bid wasn't real money.
They might have been looking for every ones ceiling, and now that they know that, will contact them after the fact to try to sell privately. |

If that is Mecum's car, it raises some serious questions to me on how business is conducted at his auctions. I agree with the previous posts that 450k is way too much money for any special paint 69 Z/28. Lets be honest, if the 450k was real money, there were two fools involved, the bidder and the guy who refused the bid. Dana is no fool, so now you have to ask yourself, what is the entire story behind this no sale??? |
Re: Carolina Blue 1969 Camaro Z/28 @ Mecum Auctions
Lot S143, the 72 LT1 Corvette belongs to Mecum too, it show also put on a great show for the TV audience.

Re: Carolina Blue 1969 Camaro Z/28 @ Mecum Auctions
i think they were looking for a piece of candy on a stick with a label wrapped around it. The label says SUCKER
|
Re: Carolina Blue 1969 Camaro Z/28 @ Mecum Auctions
The ad says the Crossram Intake was stolen from the trunk, how can this be, I have read several GM Documents that say the Crossram system had to be ordered thru the parts dept, GM says they were never sent in the trunk,, a 69Z28 with a crossram goes into a Modified class , not an original class .
Agree the crossram is worth more money, but. |
Re: Carolina Blue 1969 Camaro Z/28 @ Mecum Auctions
What a bunch of hooey.
It's been on ebay 3 times over the years - just a regular Z with special paint and the dealer modified the stripes. Now repainted. It's a 3.73 axle, btw - dealer changed to 4.10. He tried to order JL8 and dual disc clutch, but was kicked back. The docs I've seen show nothing about ordering the crossram and the factory wouldn't have them anyway. 124379N658513 |
Re: Carolina Blue 1969 Camaro Z/28 @ Mecum Auctions
Kurt is right on the money with his comments. The crossram in the trunk story is fabricated and the JL-8 was added too. I know the original selling dealer and the next time I run into him I will ask him about that car. I have 2 or 3 feature articles on that car and in the first one about 20-25 years ago, it was just a highly optioned regular Z/28 with no crossram and no JL-8.

Re: Carolina Blue 1969 Camaro Z/28 @ Mecum Auctions
Standing in front of the car now. It's nice but not $450k nice...
|
Re: Carolina Blue 1969 Camaro Z/28 @ Mecum Auctions
This is really a sad story all the way around.... I agree with everybody here , it' sure leaves a bad taste in your mouth about the whole auction process and for Mecums acting this way, and with Kurts history on the car , why why why misrepresent a car like that and taint an otherwise pretty neat 69 Z28 Camaro,....?? It is disheartening to say the least...

Re: Carolina Blue 1969 Camaro Z/28 @ Mecum Auctions
I remember all the times this car has popped up for sale from collector to collector in the past decade or so. Each time it has had a different story concerning its different "parts" and how they appeared on the car.
Very pretty car but it's just a special order paint 69Z that people have added parts to trying to make it something that it isn't. Actual value? Maybe $100k? |
Re: Carolina Blue 1969 Camaro Z/28 @ Mecum Auctions
Wasn't this car part of that great showing of every color ' 69 z28 @ MCACN a few years ago?
|
Re: Carolina Blue 1969 Camaro Z/28 @ Mecum Auctions
Yes,it was part of the 69 Z/28 display in (08) at Chevy Vette Fest.I even moved that car around when we where lining the cars up.
|
Re: Carolina Blue 1969 Camaro Z/28 @ Mecum Auctions
I'm not defending Dana Mecum (or any other auction house for that matter), but this practice of the auction house running the car up to just under the reserve is a "normal" auction practice called "chandelier bidding"...again, it's a practice of the business model and not exclusive to Mecum....

Re: Carolina Blue 1969 Camaro Z/28 @ Mecum Auctions
Yes, it is a standard practice in the auction industry since time immemorial, but most people have a problem with the insider trading aspect of a person who both owns the car, and owns the auction, doing it for his own car. As the market sees this, all it is, is an attempt to influence the future sale price(s) of this car and/or similar cars.
If this was a regulated security, the SEC would have a field day. But since cars are not regulated, it is not illegal. |

Re: Carolina Blue 1969 Camaro Z/28 @ Mecum Auctions
I hear ya NJSteve....I guess I just assume some sort of rigging is happening at these auctions, so I have lowered expectations and certainly never buy cars there...it's pure entertainment for me....sort of like the movie The Wolf of Wall Street....you know much of what's happening isn't on "the level".

Re: Carolina Blue 1969 Camaro Z/28 @ Mecum Auctions
Maybe this has been explained before, but I am curious if Chevrolet actually painted the white stripes on the rear of the car as restored? As many Z28's that were made I could not imagine this car getting a different stripe layout than others during production. Were these extended stripes something done at the dealer?

Todd </div></div> The only thing unique about this Z is the special paint order and that paint color applied at the factory. The stripes were applied the same as every other Z. Not sure if the dealer or owner had the stripes continue down the tail panel. To me a lot of hype over nothing.... |
Re: Carolina Blue 1969 Camaro Z/28 @ Mecum Auctions
Since some of the posts here were about how auctions run, I have a question. If I remember correctly at the Barrett-Jackson auctions, the staff is not allowed to bid on any of the auction cars. I may be mistaken, but I believe that is the case. Do the other auctions not have the same rules? Also, am I correct about the BJ auction company?
|
Re: Carolina Blue 1969 Camaro Z/28 @ Mecum Auctions
Does Mecum let the bidders know that they will also bid on their own cars?
.... We may discuss it here ... but a lot of the bidders are not aware of this practice unless it is in the bidders information that is supplied to them from Mecum. ...Where it is a "common" practice with auction companies... ... I thought Mecum was more "reputable" then to do this ... It just does not seem right. ... Maybe someone from Mecum will chime in and explain it to all of us. |
Re: Carolina Blue 1969 Camaro Z/28 @ Mecum Auctions
I have sold a few cars at mecum, and mine were not artifically bid close to reserve to see if there is real money in the room.

Barrett Jackson are mainly No Reserve auctions except for the 7-figure "salon" cars. That is why they don't have to chandelier bid on the cars. |
Re: Carolina Blue 1969 Camaro Z/28 @ Mecum Auctions
Many auction houses bid up near the reserve. They by law have to disclose that in the auction info. They have hundreds of cars to get thru. You might have a 100K reserve on a car and one guy bids 10K. It has the potential to waste alot of time and the auctioneer knows they are 90K away from reserve so they bid it up quickly to where they think they can put buyer and seller within deal territory. You might see a car bid up fast and die fast but it is because the auctioneer knows there is no real money.
