Strange Looking Chevy

I've never seen a car like this before but I wouldn't mind having one and drop a nasty small block inside it. Has anyone ever seen a Chevy like this?

Is this one of the hundred or so Opel SS 302 Z28 engined small block 4 speed cars built for South Africa?

This is "the" Chevy collector car when I go to an "antique car show" near my home in Brazil.... The cars I have seen were six cylinders, but all hopped up... one even had a turbo... they compete there in solo drifting/burn-out type competitions with these cars also..amongst other makes.

Re: Strange Looking Chevy

To me, it looks like a cross between a Nova and a Vega with a few Chevelle and Camaro bits and pieces thrown in.

Re: Strange Looking Chevy

That's a GM Holden Monaro, I've posted them here in the past as they're one of my fav' South Africa cars.
These were built w/ Holden V8 308's also Chevy 327 & 350 SB's as the Monaro GTS327 & GTS350 which were quite successful on the track.
See 1'st pic below also note steering wheel plus w'shld & trim looks '68 Nova...may be the same although Hardtops, not sedans like Novas.

The 100 built w/ the 302 Chevys were the '73 Vauxhall CanAm Firenzas and my absolute fav' car...as 2'nd/3'rd/4'th pics below.
I've been trying to clarify what original engine stampings were on these cars for years but have never found absolute proof...much like here in N/A, the real cars are somewhat lost in a haze of clone and rebody cars.

Re: Strange Looking Chevy

In Brazil they are definitely called and emblemed as 'Opala'... Ive never seen an SS or Gt model though... and all I've seen are straight 6 bangers ..like I said..some w holley 4 barrels, 2-2 barrels and split headers..and one w/a turbo..

I'd love to see one with a small block..even that 302 model..wowww !!! wonder why they never made them here?

....almost as cool as the 4 door hemi GTX in Brazil too !!

All cool stuff !!! Thanks for sharing !!

Re: Strange Looking Chevy

interesting one pic has "comodoro" on the quarter panel..and apparently Brazil from the pics... that translates in portuges to commodore, which is a high raking naval official. Wonder if they that was a certain model of opala?? like caprice or impala or biscayne kind of thing... anyone know? Ive never seen that yet on a car in Brazil yet.

Re: Strange Looking Chevy

Yep the Commodores were badge engineered Opels also the same name used by Holden for different cars in the later 70's...also still?
They also used other names we know...Kingswood wagons etc.

Rear view. I think this would have competed well against the Mavrick/Comet platform here. In Brazil that is what it did. I like it!

here is the cover of a book on the car ...Another styling variation too.. Dig the mid 1970's El Camino stripes...what a parts mishmash!

"SS" Super Sport Pronounced "Superde-Sport" in Portuguese.

Reminds me of a Hornet ass ended by a 69 Cuda....with various lights from Opal to Chevelle.... I like the styling and the use what we have engineering.

Re: Strange Looking Chevy

That is Opel's that were rebadged and had some cosmetic changes, in Brazil they were sold as Chevrolet Opala, in Australia as Holden Commodore.

The Opel Rekord and the 6-cylinder Commodore were the bread and butter car for most of Europe in the 50's to 70's. Body styles were very much influenced by Chevrolet design. Especially in the C-line (1967-1971) you'll see the lines of Chevelle/Malibu.

They had very small wheels back then, only 13" rims on the Rekord and 14" on the Commodore (it had larger brakes)

Here are some pictures of various models found on Google.

2-door Wagon

The Commodore had straight 6-cylinder engines. the 6-banger could also be specialordered for the Rekord, very rare. There were also convertibles made by a German coachwork company. And then the special Opel Rekord Sprint with the 2-liter, dual 2-barrel carb hi-perf engine.

Great cars that ran well, I had a bunch in my youth.

Since I first saw them in Brazil it looks TOO much like a Maverick for me....

Re: Strange Looking Chevy

The sport models look pretty sharp, but not better than a Vega GT to me. I wonder how the metal holds up. #1 reason I don't own one.
