Jon Mello's #1 Z-28
I used to have a thread on here and I thought it was here last week but now I can't find it.
Anyway, here are some pics of my (finally) completed car, most of which are from Laguna Seca last week. I hope you guys enjoy the finished product http://i586.photobucket.com/albums/s...psxqqvmo9t.jpg Here's Johnny Moore's daughter Kelly. She was born in 1972 and never saw the car but heard stories about it from her dad. She and her siblings grew up with the pedal car shown which was painted and lettered by the guy who did the car originally. Kelly was kind enough to let me borrow the pedal car for the week. http://i586.photobucket.com/albums/s...psxp29g4ok.jpg http://i586.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps9ylbnjyk.jpg http://i586.photobucket.com/albums/s...psuuzuebjo.jpg http://i586.photobucket.com/albums/s...psfqx7ujaf.jpg http://i586.photobucket.com/albums/s...pshfbabunh.jpg http://i586.photobucket.com/albums/s...pssi4ynr8w.jpg Yours truly in the catbird seat. http://i586.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps64xu2scl.jpg Here's Dennis Jones hand lettering the car. He did a great job. http://i586.photobucket.com/albums/s...psbmlkfaga.jpg Mike Joy and crew did a nice video on the car which will air on Fox on September 26th. http://i586.photobucket.com/albums/s...psi8qilfd3.jpg Many thanks to Matt Medina of Medina Motorsports for rolling out the red carpet for my daughter and me all week. That's Matt with the pedal car. The Alan Green Camaro and my car have not been together since Sebring on March 31, 1967. http://i586.photobucket.com/albums/s...psb0g8wjog.jpg http://i586.photobucket.com/albums/s...psjjsoteyu.jpg |

Re: Jon Mello's #1 Z-28
I'm curious why the driver's fender is a different shade of gold in the historic photos? Was that simply a reflection of the quality of factory paint back then. Simply awesome car!! Todd

Re: Jon Mello's #1 Z-28
Thanks, guys. I appreciate the nice compliments.
In the vintage photos some of the paint doesn't match well due to some repainting after contact with either a wall or another car. Just one of those cases where I guess they felt close was good enough. I like historical accuracy but wasn't going to go that far. |
Re: Jon Mello's #1 Z-28
Great car. So glad it fell into the right hands.... yours.
All your hard work has paid off. |
Re: Jon Mello's #1 Z-28
Just read the original thread - what a story! Great car and beautiful restoration.
This car needs to be at MCACN |

Re: Jon Mello's #1 Z-28
Thanks again for the nice compliments. I would like to also give a huge thanks to "BIG" Steve (68L30) for selling me the Pure decals for the front fenders. Those were the last decals I needed and I had been searching a very long time for them.

Re: Jon Mello's #1 Z-28
Awesome job Jon!

Re: Jon Mello's #1 Z-28
The story on how you came to own the car is just one of those occasions where Man & Machine come together at the right moment in time and what in all likely hood would have been lost to history is recovered, documented, and preserved.
Well Done Jon! |
Re: Jon Mello's #1 Z-28
The local paper did a nice write-up. First-ever Z-28 on display.

Thanks, Guys.
Mark, I'm happy to see you get back to being a Camaro owner again. That L78 will be a fun cruiser. |

Your welcome Jon! Very happy to see them on such a historic Camaro. Here's a shot of #1 in action at Daytona....Photos from the Pony Car wars 66-72. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...0975-image.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...0976-image.jpg |
Re: Jon Mello's #1 Z-28
Thanks.
Steve, that top photo looks pretty cool with its little bit of distortion going on. |
Re: Jon Mello's #1 Z-28
I think its actually shot in the infield (1968) , I had to twist the pic a bit, but the distortion is in the real photo. Pretty good picture book, I'd recommend it !

The thought of being back with a Camaro in the garage is exciting...but the car still isn't there. The seller is really dragging his feet and I am starting to fear that he is going to back out. He has owned the car for 15 years, so I will allow him to back out if that is what he wants - nice guys deserve a chance to correct a mistake - but deep down, I hope his wife forces him to follow through |
Re: Jon Mello's #1 Z-28
Steve, I do own the book and it's great. I just didn't remember the distortion in the photo.
Mark, that sucks that you don't have the car yet. I do hope it works out for you. If it turns out you have to move on to a different car, I'm sure you'll still find something cool. |

Congrats Jon. |
