Muncie Shifter Assembly Grease
What type of grease was used when these were assembled. Its silver in color and has what looks like graphite in it as well..

Dont worry Sam Im not putting it back in the green car.. Just wanted to tear down, clean, reassemble & preserve. What have you used in the past? This stuff definitely has some type of graphite in it because it would smear and was hard to remove.. Could have been something my father added to help aid the shifting problem.. Obviously didnt work since he installed a Hurst. |

Re: Muncie Shifter Assembly Grease
same thing ive seen...with age it turns yellow and gets like concrete

Re: Muncie Shifter Assembly Grease
Probably Lubriplate.......
BIG |
Re: Muncie Shifter Assembly Grease
The White Lubriplate is best because it stays put.
Never seize is only for non moving parts. |

Exactly, as I found out with the NOS Muncie shifter body that I bought and installed in my car! Had to pull it back out and hose a ton of fresh white grease in there, and now it works great. |

Very well might have been, because my friends and I did exactly that many many times back in the early 1970's......and that's why we now have to pay large sums of money to find and/or restore them |

Re: Muncie Shifter Assembly Grease
I used White Lithium grease on my 67 Muncie shifter and it
works fine to this day. Getting the parts surface really clean before the grease is the key to it. Richard |
Re: Muncie Shifter Assembly Grease
Yes Mark, it is performing beyond my expectations! All I can ever remember about those Muncie shifters is from years ago as I posted earlier, take them out and throw them in the nearest dumpster. The one you sold me is excellent!!!! The only piece I am missing now is the brace which goes from the left (driver's) side of the shifter body to the crossmember.

Re: Muncie Shifter Assembly Grease
The OEM Muncie shifter will perform ok if you don't shift it too hard
they were not designed for banging gears like the Hurst was Most people abused them as they wanted to shift like Ronnie Sox so the Muncie shifter got a bad name. |
