Gibbs ZL1 & Red Alert
3 Attachment(s)
Been posting some of my hundreds of photographs from 20-30 years ago over on various FaceBook pages but don't really know where to post these individually. These are from Muscle car Assoc High Performance Showdown at Milan in early 90's

I worked for the NMCA at the time and was at that race.

Re: Gibbs ZL1 & Red Alert
----That was me in the drivers seat of Red Alert, Lon. I was supposed to match race Porterfield that day but if I remember correctly, he broke something. That was my 1st motor. It got me down in the high 10s. The motor I ran for years (#2) got me down in the low 10s. Would have been relatively easy to hit the 9s but there were too many NHRA mandated changes I would have had to make. I wanted to keep Red basicly the same as Bob H had it.......Bill S

Re: Gibbs ZL1 & Red Alert
Cool story, Bill. I can't imagine what it's like to move that much metal down the 1/4 mile in the low 10's............

----3980lbs when I went across the scales. Tom knows!!!
----I just remembered that Terry was with me that weekend with his daughter. May He RIP. It seems I'm saying RIP a lot lately.....Bill S |
Re: Gibbs ZL1 & Red Alert
I think that was before Porterfield's fire

Re: Gibbs ZL1 & Red Alert
Terry never did race Red Alert did he? I think he just watched. What a character he was.......

Re: Gibbs ZL1 & Red Alert
----Nope, he never did. Terry, God rest his soul, could do almost nothing mechanical. He knew good cars and knew how to buy and sell them and he was a superior promoter, as well as a great and loyal friend......Bill S

Re: Gibbs ZL1 & Red Alert
These pictures saddened me because until I found them in my attic I didn't remember even being at the show. Only thing I can remember is going over to his pit spot but nothing else of the day(s). And I'm a non-drinker/smoker/drug user!
Can find all the pics here - https://www.facebook.com/groups/279400805433711/ It is a secret group so you'll have to probably sent a friend request to see posts. |
Re: Gibbs ZL1 & Red Alert
Bill, I remember like it was yesterday, that you showed up with Red Alert at Great Lakes Dragaway in Union Grove, WI on a Wednesday night in the early 90's.
I will never forget how hard that car launched!!! Good times, good times! Speaking of Terry Carney, I can still remember how much fun I had riding shotgun with him in his 1969 L89 Corvette all the way from Chicago to Bloomington, IL Corvette show. I must have been 9-10 years old. I just remember it was loud and hotter than hell!! I loved every minute of it! RIP Terry Regards, Dave |
Re: Gibbs ZL1 & Red Alert
----Dave,,,Good to hear from you as always! I remember that night well.
----The Corvette was the maroon t-top, right? I detailed that 69 for judging that year. While going over the tail-light area I took everything off to polish the area and forgot to re-hook up the harness to the license-plate light, Terry got dinged on that and his Irish temper worked its way to the surface. He got a silver anyway, but figured that he might have receieved a gold if I hadn't dropped the ball. Two Irish tempers at work, but we got over it after a couple of beers,,,LOL!!! Wonder what happened to that L89.....Bill S |
Re: Gibbs ZL1 & Red Alert
Yes Bill, It was the maroon L89. I had a smile from ear to ear the whole way down. In typical Terry fashion, he was not lacking in the conversation department.LOL
Always a barrel of laughs! Ol' Carndog Regards, Dave |
Re: Gibbs ZL1 & Red Alert
I have Always drooled all over RED ALERT..I went to every Nostalgia race at Milan Dragway, Martin 131 dragway, and others.. I had a red 70 chevelle frt. end hanging on my wall of my Garage with a License plate Evil Mean wicked and nasty.. It's the car that got me into chevelles.
Wish I hadn't missed out when Tom and Rob was selling it.. A day late-- story of my life |
Re: Gibbs ZL1 & Red Alert
