Chevy orange
Who makes the best "rattle can" Chevy orange out there for the 1969 year? Best color and coverage?
Thanks! |

Re: Chevy orange
I have always used Seymour EN-48. I think I had read somewhere that Quanta rebrands the Seymour paint.

Re: Chevy orange
If you can, I would suggest you have someone shoot on a couple of coats of ppg dp70lf red oxide epoxy primer on first if you're doing the whole long blk. We like to shoot POR chevy orange thinned with laquer thinner about 10-15% through a primer gun. You can tweak that with a final dust coat of dupli color. It all dulls out after you drive it a few times. FWIW

I think that's an important aspect. The orange was not full gloss from the factory. |
Re: Chevy orange
I have seen two different shades of the Chevrolet motor orange with one being darker than the other. Did both shades get used in 1969 or are the colors from different years?
|
Re: Chevy orange
Some have described it as having a reddish hue. I found that the plasticote was dead on for the color but a bit too glossy for a show car that is not driven. I used it on my 70 Z28 resto because it was the best color match to the original paint on the block. June 70 car BTW..

Re: Chevy orange
The atmosphere you spray your rattle can in is big factor also.
Humid days always produce a different hue. |

</div></div> What's the difference between Dupli-color 1607 and 1620 when it comes to OEM color match? I've noticed that 1620 is less red, and more orange. What years would have used the 1620? That's what I have on my engine (1620), but the orange looks a little bright compared to OEM paint (in my opinion). |
Re: Chevy orange
Don't know,never used #1620.

Re: Chevy orange
I was going to go with VHT, but after some suggestions from others and seeing a couple pics, I went with Seymour EN-48 for my spare motor. Here is how it came out. I just finished it this past week.

THAT is Chevy orange!

Re: Chevy orange
I'm real happy with how the color turned out. I started out with soaking the engine with simple green a couple weeks ago and gave it a good wash. I wasn't going to be able to finish that day, so I sprayed it down with WD40 to stop any flash rusting. When I got ready to paint it, I used gasoline soaked blue shop towels and wiped it down thoroughly. After I wiped it down with dry towels, I ran my propane torch over it to make sure I got every last bit off and to heat up the block a little. Next was Wax & Grease remover. Let it dry/wipe it down. Spray several light coats, then several heavy coats allowing a few minutes between coats. I heated the paint with the torch between coats too. Not close enough for the flame to touch it though.

Thanks Bruce -- just another home build ... can't wait to finish up this project. Craig

Re: Chevy orange
I used Plastikote on the Z when I did the motor. Yea, its glossy but it is super easy to keep clean. I don't mind it. For my latest project which I'm trying to duplicate/match up older paint I grabbed Duplicolor, VHT was way to red. So far so good. Let me know if you need any more advice Sam.

Re: Chevy orange
Although I didnt use it on the 67; I agree that the 1607 Duplicolor is the correct.

Re: Chevy orange
1607 red orange would be correct for the early 70's. 1620 orange looks to be more correct for the 60's.

Re: Chevy orange
I like the Semour. It doesn't seem to have the gloss like others but as Shoney says" It all Dull's after driving.

Re: Chevy orange
Great shot Mr Frantz.. That does look like the 1607 duplicolor where the 68 is more like a dull 1620..

Re: Chevy orange
Did Flint and Tonawanda shades even match? I would imagine each plant may have had their own paint supplier and there could have been different shades depending on where it was built (or maybe not?).
|
Re: Chevy orange
If that were true then would the smog bracket match the same color on the manifolds? Werent the accessory brackets painted at the assembly plants and not at the engine plants? May have to defer to someone with more knowledge as I am headed to a meeting so I can not research at the moment.

Re: Chevy orange
I know in the early '60s nothing was painted Chevrolet Orange at the plants. The key is to look at the A.I.M. Anything that was assembled to the engine at the plant was either black, natural or plated. There were assembly differences between the two plants however before the engines were painted, such as the generator/alternator brace. Flint small blocks had the brace installed at the plant and it was black. Tonawanda small blocks had the brace installed at the engine plant and were painted orange along with the engine.
As for the two engine plants, since GM owned them both I'd think that they both received the same paint. From originals I've seen, I see no difference between the two plants through the mid sixties. Verne |
