6K/8K Tach
2 Attachment(s)
Is this the correct tach for a late production Z28/L78/L72 car?
When was the change date from the 6K/7K tachs? Thank you in advance for your replies. |
Re: 6K/8K Tach
6,000 - 8,000 is 'mid to late' (from http://www.camaros.org/interior.shtml#69Z28Tach).
Not sure when the change in upper rpm redline from 7,000 to 8,000 occurred, but I have Jan/Feb in mind. |
Re: 6K/8K Tach
Thank you.
Is this a Z only tach, or would it have also been used in the L78/L72 cars? |
Re: 6K/8K Tach
AFAIK, the 6k/8k tach was also used on the solid lifter BB engines as well as the Z/28. I looked up the number on the rear of your tach and the February 1969 P&A Catalog lists 6469780 under 9.750 Tachometer Assembly as:
'69 CAMARO w/console gauges, speed warning (302)' So, if I read that correctly, the tach you pictured is Z/28-specific, although I believe that the original assembly would have included the harness, filter etc, so the difference between it (6469780) and the non-speed warning Z/28 and L78 version (6469383) may lie there, the assembly, rather than in the tach head itself....... |
Re: 6K/8K Tach
The 8000 rpm tach was Z/28 only and entered production early February 1969. It was phased in; at the time some cars were built with the 6000/7000 rpm tach. A very few later production Z/28s had an 8000 rpm tach with a 6500 rpm red line.
Mechanical lifter big blocks used the 6000/7000 rpm tach. |
Re: 6K/8K Tach
For whatever reason, the L72/L78 Camaro used 6K/7K tach throughout the entire production year, including the "extended model year" I would love to know the reason; seems like extra inventory item to me.

Re: 6K/8K Tach
In stock form none of those engines would reach 8,000 rpm more than once. Chalk it up to marketing.

Re: 6K/8K Tach
My 05E Z has a 6 / 8 k red line and my 11 A of 69 has the same you don't get any later than this car so I would say they didn't have a 6500 to 8 k tack

Re: 6K/8K Tach
The 6500/8000 rpm indeed does exist; I have seen several. They are very rare and not all late builds have it. Earliest one in the CRG db is N709xxx.

It's curious though that both the February 69 and October 70 P&A Catalogs call up the same tach assembly number (6469383) for 'Sp. H/Per (302,396)' applications. So does this suggest that the same assembly number (6469383) was used for both the 6k/7k and 6k/8k tach heads, as there is no apparent change between the Feb 69 and Oct 70 catalog listings? |
Re: 6K/8K Tach
Service parts often don't exactly match production. Fit & function, not appearance, is the over-riding criteria. No telling what they would have shipped if you ordered that part number. Maybe a 6/7, maybe a 6/8. I was a service parts analyst in the industry. Electronic components sometimes vary only in appearance. A supplier often dictates what you can do; they aren't going to maintain parts, production tooling & fixturing indefinitely after a part is no longer used in production. So you pick one version and do a "life of part" buy to cover the anticipated service life of the vehicle.
There is pressure from management to limit obsolete stock at the end of a production run. A family member is the original owner of a very late production '69 Camaro SS L35/4-speed. Built with a 6000/7000 tach. Should have had a 5500/7000; probably ran out. |

Re: 6K/8K Tach
Thank you for all of the replies.
I have yet to find a question that could not be answered here. |
