Wide Oval radials are in

There's been some guys asking about experiences with the new Wide Oval Firestone radials... I ordered a set for my Nova...F 70 15 front...G 70 15 for the rear. I got the F's today. They look pretty good. Still a little "round" on the edges, and the tread is a bit different. The lines aren't all the same width like the bias tires... I don't have them mounted yet/waiting for the other 2. Over all I'm happy with the look/performance to be determined soon.

They look good! Looking forward to hearing how they perform.

Best,
Dave

ZiggyL78 03-29-2017 04:42 AM

Great.I hope they hook as well as the Firehawks.

SS4Real 03-29-2017 08:13 PM

Look forward to the pics when mounted and your review. Those look nice.

Would love to see side by side pics of the radial versus original bias ply tires...

I like this new radial/vintage look vs. the redline Radial T/As that are available. Getting ready to pull the trigger on a set for my Camaro.

exactly. Me too. They do look good

MosportGreen66 03-30-2017 02:04 PM

Hey Bill, approximately how wide are the rears? Can you measure them for us when they arrive?

Looking good...

Thanks,
Dan

mockingbird812 03-30-2017 06:59 PM

curious - are these radials meant to look like bias plys or are these repros of actual early radials? Not a bad look.

Bill Rose 03-30-2017 08:58 PM

I don't have the rear G's yet, and I can't seem to be able to get an answer when they're coming. I can't mount them until I have all 4 b/c the new tires are going on the rims that are on the car now.
Tires look totally different mounted. When I have them mounted I will be able to compare the two. I do have a set of bias ply's here, but to compare them now isn't really what they will look like side by side with both mounted on wheels.

427TJ 03-30-2017 10:29 PM

I'm hopeful that they are a better made tire than the old non-radial Cokers. It will be interesting to see how much weight will be needed to balance them.

Mr. Chevy 03-30-2017 11:43 PM

Sam, I think they are supposed to look like the vintage bias ply...

ORIGLS6 03-31-2017 01:17 AM

Obviously not an exact copy, but overall I think they look pretty darned good.

Bill Rose 04-04-2017 07:33 PM

Ok....I got the F's mounted, still don't have the G's for the rear. The two wheels in the side by side picture are different size wheels, so don't compare size. The radial is a F-70-15, and the bias tire is a G-70-15.

The tread pattern is a bit different, and the radial is a bit "rounder" but I think they did a good job trying to get the look right, and still perform like a radial. I can't test the performance of the tires until I get the rear tires. I'll report back when I get them/hopefully next week.

Nice!

scuncio 04-04-2017 08:03 PM

Wow, those look really good. Can you comment on price? I'm in the market.

Bill Rose 04-04-2017 08:57 PM

About $1100. for all 4 tires. 2-G-70-15 & 2-F-70-15

Mr70 04-04-2017 09:27 PM

Is that $1100 including shipping?

Bill Rose 04-04-2017 10:35 PM

I got the tires thru Jegs, and they have free shipping. I believe Summit has the same policy.

Which car are they going on

Bill Rose 04-04-2017 11:25 PM

Most of the time they'll be on the Nova. If I like the way they handle, I may get a set of redlines for my 68 Chevelle....

Cool let me know as I have a 69 nova as well.

Woj 04-05-2017 03:17 AM

Bill,

That is a pretty good looking tire. I'll be interested to know how they perform.

Thanks for the pix.

Phil

MosportGreen66 04-24-2017 01:57 PM

Hey Bill, any update? I'm consider these for our '70 LT1 Vette and would love your opinion on performance.

Regards,
Dan

OK so I decided to not wait and go with all F-70-15’s front and rear. The G’s won’t be out until maybe August, or later. So all 4 are mounted and balanced/on the car. Took it out for a quick test drive. They perform just like any other radial as far as I could tell from a quick spin. I’m happy with them. Been dealing with a back ache, so when I can, I’ll do a longer test drive, but so far so good.

Thanks for the update on these Bill. I checked this page just yesterday as I was hoping to hear more since I was on the fence about a set of them myself. They look much better mounted up and all. Now get that back healed up. :)

Wide-Oval radials...

I remember that car...looking good!

olredalert 05-11-2017 11:25 PM

----I really hope Corky got these good looking tires right, as other radials that Coker has done were abysmal as far as any kind of performance driving. I'm not knocking him as I'm sure he has to jump thru a lot of hoops, but we guys occasionally drive our cars hard and some of his radial attempts have fallen short, in my opinion.......Bill s

Looks real good Bill. Thanks for sharing. I'm a big proponent of putting radials on the non-show cars/drivers. This helps bridge the gap. I have one order to place for these tires now and likely will be two come the summer.

Nice Nova and thanks for not putting SS emblems on it ;)

Dan

Bill Rose 05-12-2017 01:53 AM

Thanks Dan...Yes, it's not an SS. I even put Chevy symbol center caps on the wheels.

So I noticed... classy touch brother!

ban617 05-12-2017 03:15 AM

What size tire would have been on the nova originally?
