Cowl Plenum aircleaner for crossram.
1 Attachment(s)
Friend of mine this up recently... rumored to be from a Penkse Trans Am car, any idea what something like this is worth?
I had seen some old photos of T/A cars and had previously seen this air cleaner assembly however I had assumed they were made by the teams and did not realize these were GM parts until seeing the instructions. |

Cool. It is for a short or tall element. The taller element ones are worth more. I had one on a 67 Z years ago. No idea on value of them these days.

Penske fabricated their 2x4 air cleaners themselves. They didn't use the GM fiberglass piece as shown in your photo.
I think a friend of mine may have owned that piece at one time and sold it to who your friend got it from. |

Pretty neat for a GM piece...
Charlie, How can you tell if it is for the tall or short element? |
AFP 22 or 44 for short and tall elements. I can't tell from the pic.
|
It looks like the earlier short design to me.

What's this thing worth guys

My suggestion: put it on eBay with a reserve of $2000 and see what happens. |
Repro is repro... repro door seals are 100 NOS correct are 2500 so do I go with 25X the amount of 1695?
Kinda makes Repro irrelevant in this case. |

The air cleaner in question was never available from Chevy as a "factory supplied part." It was an over the counter part you could order from the Parts Dept. So who is going to buy it and pay big bucks for it? It would only be correct for a 1968 Z/28 where the original buyer went to the Parts Dept. and ordered the 2X4 Cross Ram. The number of potential buyers would be extremely small if any at all. |
Plenty of guys on this site would love to own this whether factory installed or not.

Any factory Crossram part is desirable. Have you priced original crossram carbs lately? They weren't factory installed either.

How many members here own a 1968 Z/28 that when purchased also included a dealer installed Cross Ram . . . and have the paperwork to prove it? |
Read my post again.

Isn't originality of the utmost importance (for the most part) here? Isn't adding options after the fact frowned upon? |
Is an option that was never available from the factory any less "original" if I install it in 2017 than if the original owner installed it in 1968?

I have never heard of the cross ram being a rpo in 69 and don't know of any documented ones in the trunk.
|
Ditto Charley. I have never seen or heard of an rpo code or GM documentation for crossram. only a service item. Lee what website did you find this?
|
Urban legend..

I didn't want to say anything, but........Charley and Steve beat me too it.

I think that myth developed from the different Z/28 codes in 68. In 68 you could order with headers, that were, in fact, in the trunk and could be dealer installed.
The cross ram was pretty well known by the 69 model year, especially after Car & Driver did the 68 Z (with over the counter cross ram and over the counter 4 wheel disc brakes) comparison with a 302 Ford Tunnel Port engine Mustang. Lots of guys just assumed they could order the next year (69) with headers and cross ram. Of course, you could order both headers and cross ram over the counter, and there may have been a few dealers that would even do the swap for you, as the feds really weren't cracking down that badly yet. |
