Pop quiz time. What does one do when they A: Have a car freshly restored wrapped up in a corner waiting until after a certain show in November is over so the tires can be roasted, and B: Have another car on a rotisserie getting blasted with another full restoration on the way for next year's certain show? Answer: Simple.... you buy another car that needs to be restored!:hmmm:
Why would anyone do something so stupid? The reasons are vast and convoluted. Or is that corrugated? I don't know, I did goodly in skool, so my vocabulism may not be the most bestest. But what I did snag up was a 1978 Y82, W72, WS6 Trans Am complete with window sticker, buildsheet, manuals, and a few other tidbits of documentation! Options on the car are power disk brakes, power steering, power windows, power locks, Velour Cloth interior, AM/FM 8-Track, Cruise, Air, Tilt, Hurst T-Tops. Porn handlebar moustachio and cowboy hat to follow! More pics when it gets here later this month. Cheers Dave |
Its a sickness Dave -- take two shots of the best ... hit the rack and start fresh in the AM ... TAZ :flag::flag::flag:

Cool car, any interior shots? Any rust/rot? |
What he said! This is a January built car, and my understanding from the W72 site, autos were only available during the first half of the year tapering off to only 4spds during that latter part of 78. And yeah, only 4spds in 79 with that engine. My car is an Automatic.
Some rot on one fender and oddly, the right rear frame rail by the shackle. That's about it. Already diving into catalogs and I scooped up a few NOS wiring harnesses for it:smile: But it'll just be driven as-is until I get the Mustang done. Yeah..... right:no: Cheers Dave |
Even got the Georgia State Flag license tag...
LOL... it must be a bitch getting those suits in size 68 extra fat and 12 dwarf... Well I'm gonna need a car to run blocker for the all the beer... Speedy car.... Speedier than that... |
Can't wait to see this one!

For more inspiration, I drove this '78 Y82 at Mecum a few years ago. IIRC, it sold for $68,000 - and this was a year or two before 2nd gen Trans Ams caught fire.

Second, if you are going to use a stereotype for a 1978 Trans Am, it would be more along the lines of the "disco" culture. See Saturday Night Fever for inspiration. That is all........ ;) |
:rolleyes2:
The point was to be humorous not pictorially accurate.. Here ya go maybe this will appease the masses.. https://i0.wp.com/cdn.fansided.com/w...5/04/fever.gif https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com...90ec04e029.gif |
My buddy's mom bought a 78 last fall and he worked on it all winter. When she first looked at it she told me it had no rust. It was terrible we ended up pulling the axle out to work on the rear frame rails the trunk was bad floors were bad fenders were bad it was a mess. She told me all she wanted was carpet put in, I told her there was nothing to hold the carpet up. That car is loaded tho. He had a lot of trouble getting the right weather strip for the t-tops. And it did not fit very good

Man, some of those cars didn't survive too well, did they? |
This car had the dash hacked, a.c. removed, interior was all painted. Poor car. My buddy is an excellent panel repair guy for working in computers! The car is back at his house and I will get pics. Oh it was running warm and he knew the engine had been rebuilt so he pulled the thermostat off and instead of laying on the manifold someone had shoved it up in the water neck and the water neck was mostly plugged off from the housing of the thermostat. I told him you know that guy probably was the one to put the engine back together. Now he's concerned LOL. It was smashed and shoved tight in the neck. He found the typical some places have better fitting sheet metal than others, so Dave if you need any information let me know

Any update? Looking forward to this build.

Car is in my shop, I'm starting to collect parts and see what all it needs. You know.... that "fun" stage when you first get something new! But it'll be on ice until I get the Mustang done, or someone pays me an astronomically stupid amount of money for it, then wants me to start on it first and put the Mustang in hold. Anyone? :hmmm: Buehler......?
Cheers Dave |
Well......no pics of it in your shop!?

But of course! I crawled around it the other day and found a few unique things. First being the period correct, rarely redone, Day-2 mod for the early 80s...12" Kicker Subs, tweeters, midranges, and crossovers!! I even found a CB radio under the back seat! I think these speakers were worth about 200lbs of weight in the trunk. Sadly, the rear package tray suffered a complete butchering due to this, but Ebay to the rescue!~!:flag: A quick click of the mouse and a complete package tray and rear seat divider, nicely cut out with spot welds intact, is on deck for installation when the time comes.
I also was sure to get the original 15x8 WS6 wheels with the car. Not knowing much about them, a little search shows there apparently is about 192 different styles of them:hmmm:. These were most common on the Gold cars, but the Y82s got them too (the all gold painted style). So now I have two sets to chose from and frankly, like the way the 15x7s fit better. But we'll see what goes back on the car. Interior all there, radio in a box in the trunk. Clock even works on the tach!!! I found a few markings on the car; one on the hood underside and another on the firewall. Everything on the engine matches up too. A/C hoses are in the trunk too....because Pontiacs had really long hoses back then:rolleyes2: It's positively aweful, and I love it!!!!! Also, a very very VERY rare option known on the Buildsheet as DS8P (Deer Smacker 8- Points). It's the little sonic shistle thing installed by the front marker light. That little jobby, at speed, emits a sonic "boom" that stuns 8-Point Bucks rendering them helpless as you smack them off the road. Actually,,, I think PepBoys sells them and they're supposed to scare the deer away. Maybe making them laugh so hard anyone would put something like that on their car they won't be on the road to get hit???:hmmm::hmmm:? Enjoy! Cheers Dave |
Love it!
BTW, use the 15 x 8 WS6 wheels. They will add greatly to the badassery of this car! Trust me on this. |
Thanks! And yeah...I think you're right with the wheels. I'm really itching to start on it. Something about cruising with the tops off is really enticing right now. But...Bullitt first. I'm hoping for paint on that in a couple months!
First thing I do want to do is yank the tank and see if I can find another buildsheet. I'll keep you's guys posted! Cheers Dave |
Looks like the same car as my buddys moms. He did have trouble getting interior colors to match but cant remember why. He got cheap door panels and they were not the shape of tbe door and didnt hang right. I am pretty sure her car is 4 wheel disks but it was pretty hacked up and rusty

This Trans Am build is going to FUN!
Love it....there will be a lot of Sum Bitch jokes and Movie trailers :D Dan |
I had a 1978 Trans Am when I was in college, but it was silver with the Pontiac 400 (not the 403 Olds), luxurious red velour interior and Hurst Hatches as well.
Yeah, you don't want to get caught in the rain in that as those T-Tops are more like directional downspouts than actual rain barriers. Fun cars, and looking forward to the build. |
