Judging at MCACN

For those of you who may be wondering exactly how this whole judging thing goes down, let me show you...in a few photos...my experience with what all went down this past weekend. Good, bad, ugly....this is something I think everyone needs to experience once in their classic car hobby life. So what all goes down? Here's a running commentary:rolleyes2: (Oh yeah...you all knew this was coming!!!)

The Judges meet at the car....

Hat Guy: "Wait...I got a text from Bob..."Show no mercy"??? What you think he means by that?":hmmm:
Blue Stripped Shirt Guy: "I don't know...but I can tell you this'll be easy. Look at that firewall!"
Solid Blue Shirt Guy: (thinking)....man this is horrible:thumbsdown:

Hat Guy: "Don't worry. Easier to circle what's RIGHT with the car than WRONG!!"
Blue Stripped Shirt Guy: "See this? Isn't that from a Camaro??"
Solid Blue Shirt Guy: (thinking)...tsk....how do you even mess up the easy stuff?
Guy Behind Solid Blue Shirt Guy: "Man, I loves me those Cameros!"

Me: "Listen...I don't want you looking at the front right fender. I had an incident in painting and...
Hat Guy: "Incident? Well then I have to look!"
Blue Shirt Guy: "Is that the remnants of a Moth in the paint???":hmmm:
Salmon Colored Shirt Guy with Camera: "Is that guy looking at the Moth in the paint?:hmmm:
Guy in Black Jacket Behind Everyone: (thinking)...what's everyone looking at? It's just a Moth in the paint!

Blue Shirt Guy: "Yep...looks like Crayola Mango-Fantango instead of Hemi Orange engine paint to me too":rolleyes2:
Hat Guy: (thinking)...Is that the remnants of a Moth in the paint?:dunno:

LOL Dave...you crack me up!

A12pilot 11-23-2017 05:48 PM

Of course you all know I had to interject humor into this. But in reality, the Judging was a lot of fun and they were great to deal with. Once again, Bob knocked it out of the park with the show, and I've already signed up for next year! Actually, I just have a standing application on file from now until they don't run the show anymore. What am I bringing each year? Beats me!:dunno: But I'll be there!!!

Cheers

Dave

I had a good experience. The car did what I figured it would do. I felt the judging staff were very fair and friendly.

I was a little surprised however that it is a point deduction for reproduction bias ply tires. I always thought you were ok with those vs. radials.

Really?
Did they gig cars for having reproduction batteries too?

Mr. Chevy 11-23-2017 10:30 PM

No they didn't do that on my car but can't speak for any others. I heard on some other cars no points were deducted for reproduction bias ply tires but that was with different judges on other car makes.

I showed my 67Z for the first time at mcacn in day2 . My car got docked 129 points and was thinking about it on my way home. I had a great time and not being disrespectful but when the judge told me that I was being docked for no vin plate, I had to show him its on the inside door pillar and cowl tag has 4L on it. Maybe a survivor class could be created for cars that have unrestored paint, chrome, glass, vinyl top, sheet metal etc. I am happy with the bronze award I received , but with a 19k mile survivor thought I would have scoped better. Just my opinion. Thanks for a great show. I did have a great time, thanks to John Mellor.

Judging can be sometimes subjective...

Dave, you should bring a green car and a black car :haha: next year.:biggthumpup:

Having gone through this process with two cars now at MCACN, it was sure fun watching you guys sweat this year. Thanks for letting us set by you all weekend Rich! After watching the judges go over Rich's car, I think they are getting tougher on everyone in general. But then again, the quality of the restoration are really improving also!

Thanks for showing with us, you have a gorgeous Z and I think it should be left exactly as it is. We do have specialized judging for unrestored cars. That is our Vintage Certification program led by Steve Shauger. Vintage is entirely different and does not use the same judges or judging sheets or criteria.

That was hilarious, Dave! LOL. Love it.. Im seriously thinking of just bringing our cars next year and not getting em judged. Im not sure at this time if i want to go thru the stress or not.

A12pilot 11-30-2017 09:42 PM

Thanks, Frank! All in good fun. It's a personal decision for sure. Either way..... BRING THOSE CARS NEXT YEAR!!! There... how's that for persuasion?

Cheers

Frank,

I almost opted to not have the car judged but decided to do it due to all the hustle and trouble of getting the car to Chicago and the costs associated. I figured it will only be there once so why not try to get something from this show. This is one of the top tier Muscle Car Shows in the country, if not one of the best in my opinion, and wanted a nice accolade to go with the car from this show.. I would recommend just doing it..

Mark, I was very happy to have you guys sitting with me... You guys are always welcome.. Mike and Larry were a big help with the Saturday matter.... I was just disappointed we couldn't get Courtney over for a picture with us with and the yellow beast... LOL...

Yea Rich, its also going to be a once in a lifetime show for us too.. I was thinking of taking all 3 cars but that would be a logistic nightmare..

I want to take our Judge and our Sons(23 years old) 86 Grand national because it was built on the same line in the same plant 17 years apart. Kinda like distant cousins display :)
