76 Trans Am Day 2ish Survivor

I purchased this car about 6 weeks ago for inventory. The job hazard I have now, I fall in love with these cars. This one is no exception. Bruce featured the car here............https://www.yenko.net/forum/showthread.php?t=156544.

I decided to slow down a little bit, as Tracey and I have become rather fond of the car. It has some Day 2 adds the original owner performed to the car before he parked it in 1995. I thought I'd carry on with a few items while fixing the few items that needed attention.

I was able to fit PMD center caps to my 200S wheels........

Found an NOS Thrush crossover muffler. I'll make the car a dual exhaust like it should be, attached to the Casler headers the OO added in 1980. I have an appointment to get the pipes bent this Thursday over by a buddy. We should be able to use the original tailpipes.

I tried to save the original headliner. I just has shrunk too much and cannot be properly fitted to the cardboard. I found original material courtesy of a SYC member. That should be here soon.

I'll post some pics after a few things are done. I'm in the process of rubbing in the #7

napa68 08-27-2019 06:02 PM

I have been working on Trans Am most of today. Here is what an hour of rubbing with rags and lacquer thinner has yielded. Any other suggestions for the cracks, crevices, brake lines, etc?

Like many cars, this thing was Ziebart coated when new.

----Just me but I don't think I would use lacquer thinner. Try some thing like wax and grease remover, or just kerosene. Eventually the L-thinner will eat thru that beautiful primer, and it really does appear beautiful. Also, use plastic scrapers (you may already be doing this).....Bill S

A diesel fuel-soaked rag works great. I used it to clean the bottom of our 73 SD455.

ScottG 08-29-2019 01:16 AM

I buy a gallon metal container of WD-40 and the plastic spray bottle that is made for it. Get a soft plastic bristle brush . Spray the WD-40 and let it sit a few minutes , spray it again and use the plastic brush. Keep the brush clean by washing it out with the WD-40 . It will take a while to get all the undercoating off but this will not harm any paint or primer. Any paint daubs or stencils will not go away. Get some plastic scrapers that are not sharp and those will help with the thick crap.. 5 gallons used on my 1970 GS , but it got Archival Elite at BCA Nats.. Some things are worth the effort..lol..

This is the result of the #7 rub down. This is strictly 3 coats of #7, no machine work. Personally, I like to avoid the machine work when I can...........

Well done! Did you let it soak? I did on my 75fj and it worked really well. Did you clay bar?

I soaked overnight and yes I clayed it out as well. I need to try one of those Eagle One mitts

Mr70 08-29-2019 01:29 PM

x1000

Ever since you guys recommended it here earlier this year I have been using it. Have done all our cars in the fleet over the summer and it's unbelievable how well it works. Last week I did our sons 2004 Envoy hand me down with 190k miles that gets driven a lot and sat out all summer without getting washed very much. The original paint looked like new afterwards.

Amazon

Mr70 09-01-2019 01:30 PM

Just type in Eagle One surface prep mitt in the eBay search box.
I paid $10 total for one shipped to me,but their prices fluctuate throughout the year.

I've had some time as of late to work on this car. I had a growl in the transmission, so I knew I had that had to come out. So, pull the trans, send the flywheel out to be machined and have the clutch balanced along with it........and get cleaning the floor pans while the trans is out the exhaust is off.

I elected to replace the headers (tons of leaks) with the original exhaust manifolds and put a stock system on it from a 74.

Trans is out by Crash right now for some love!

Worst set of headers to get at the bolts.............cut them out!

napa68 01-16-2020 04:52 PM

The clutch and flywheel came back. In all of that, I found the source of a vibration. The original flywheel was out a fair amount! Balanced that along with the clutch to the flywheel, and begin to reassemble.

Along the same lines, it is remarkable how far out the original bellhousing was!. The initial measurements to check for being concentric had it off by .015! Got that straightened out........now it should go together like butter.

If you haven't bought the exhaust manifolds yet, I would highly recommend getting a set of the repro ram air manifolds. They are very close to what those headers were in terms of flow and they don't leak like headers. It's what we did with the Gramma car.

I studied your builds carefully. I'm just going to use the stock manifolds (which came with the car) for now. If I freshen the motor (compression and cam), the RA manifolds are definitely on the docket along with the Pypes system.

Phase 1 of undercoating removal.....................

Results tomorrow.

Wiped it down with original formula Go-Jo hand cleaner and let it sit for a few hours. Then, I worked it in with a fine scuff pad. I let it sir some more, and then hit it with a steam cleaner. I'll post pics a bit later today.

Me too. Learned that one over on Corvette Forum

That is amazing, nice work! I'll remember that!

napa68 01-24-2020 04:53 PM

The last few days I have removed the fuel tank to clean it, and the surrounding area of dirt, undercoating, and anything else the does not belong in there.

I must say, I found some undercoating that struck me as a factory finish. It is much more robust than anything else I had found on this car or the 80 Z28 I recently did the same thing with. NJ Steve, I looked through a couple of your threads and did not see anything real conclusive that would mirror my findings.

Anyways............

I got the trans back from Crash a couple of weeks ago, and all of the new exhaust parts came in. On the advice of NJSteve, I purchased the Pypes system along with the Ram Air Restoration manifolds. Just waiting for the exhaust tips and the car will be for the most part, finished.

----Wow! Love that underbody! With those exhaust manifolds and that exhaust set-up you should put "HO" on the shaker after the 455!!!

Burd 02-25-2020 01:14 PM

In my 1978 Dealer Album, it shows we’re any sound deadener would be used. Heck a 1976 one

Burd 02-25-2020 06:26 PM

Double check your Ram Air PCs, they sent one side to me that was wrong, never made it rite, hung up the phone when we talked about it. GTO have a diff pattern on the ears. They sent me a GTO driver side manifold.

Everything fit perfectly. Heat cycled it a few times, cinched everything back up some more......and we're good to go. I suggested the same system to a customer of mine yesterday, and now I am installing that in his 78 TA.

My neighbor had the exact same color combo on a '76 Firebird. Trust me, the T/A package makes a world of difference on that vehicle.
