Just over a year after the North American Eagle land-speed racing team lost one of its two co-drivers, Ed Shadle, and vowed to continue his quest to set a land-speed record, its other co-driver, television personality and racer Jessi Combs, has died in a high-speed crash at the Alvord Desert in Oregon.

The crash took place Tuesday afternoon as the team conducted what was described as a test session on the desert. The test session was the team’s first since last year, when Combs ran the North American Eagle to 483.227 MPH, but a piece of debris damaged the turbine.

Just saw that...she was fearless when it came to speed! She was so much more then what people thought of her. She died doing what she loved I guess.

So many episodes on Overhaulin

RIP Jessi

Very sad. The girl had guts, that's for sure. R.I.P.
It will be interesting to see if they can determine the cause. I am certainly no expert but I've always wondered about the stability of a plane-turned-car in these applications. Seems like the turbulence coming up off the ground is something it was never really designed for.
Did I read correctly that they had thoughts of going for the land speed record of 763 in that?

"Combs joined the North American Eagle Supersonic Speed Challenger team as driver in 2013. Her goal was to pilot the car (built from a decommissioned fighter jet) beyond 512 mph, the record for Fastest Woman on Earth, set in 1976 by Kitty O'Neil."

Looks like that car started life as an F-104 Starfighter ...

Terribly sad as she was a bad-azz racer and did a lot for women and girls in motor sports. May Jesus Bless her soul and comfort her loved ones.

Sometimes we are called on to do something for someone else. That thing isn’t something that we need or really want to to do. But we without a doubt have to do it with all our heart. This was definitely one of those things.
Hanging out with Jessi a year ago, and filming some shows for Discovery. I never thought she would be overwhelming my thoughts and heart like she has for the last couple weeks. Without a doubt this is the emotionally hardest piece of metal I have ever had to shape. Not because of the skills or labor involved. It because of what it is and what it symbolizes, and who’s ashes it will hold forever. I had no plan, no patterns, no design ideas. I simply cut a circle of copper and started hammering. I let the metal dictate what it wanted to be. Thinking about her every step of the way and what she would like, and what she would think about it. Hoping I gave it the right amount of love, blood, sweat and tears.
Thank you Terry for the honor of letting me do this. I hope in some way it makes your pain a little lighter.

Not a big fan of Jesse James, but that was a beautiful sentiment and very well stated.
