Vintage pics of my Stepdad's 69 Super Bee.
My Stepdad sent these to me last night. First time I'd seen pics of the car that he has talked about forever. 4 speed car.
First pic is circa 1970, second is 1971-72. http://lstwo.com/images/19638089169537004015.jpg http://lstwo.com/images/45268799411654535696.jpeg |

Yes, Y2. That's what I was thinking of. Agree that it looks white but that Y2 in old photos looks white.

It was Y2 yellow. He bought it from his cousin, who bought it new. The cousin was stationed in Germany while in the service so he sold it to my Stepdad for $1,000 in 1971. What a deal! he told me that his parents held their breath the entire time he had that car. lol. I can imagine as my Stepdad has told me many stories of he and his buddies racing around McAlester, Ok. back then. He sold it in 1973-74 for $1,400 and bought a Torino GT. |
Well, I'm about 90% sure that I have found my Step Dad's old Super Bee. A picture popped up on Instagram about a Y2 Super Bee being pulled out of a barn in Oklahoma, 2 hours from where my Step Dad lived when he owned the Super Bee. Same color, same engine and trans combo.
I think the odds that a twin to his car ended up 2 hours away are just too high. It's very likely the same car. Talked to the owner and it's for sale. It comes with the non numbers 383 and 4 speed and has no interior. It's beat to hell too. Car is rough but solid enough to save. Trunk pan and lower quarters are rusty. Floors and top look pretty solid. The thing is, my Step Dad has decided to pass on it. We both think it's too expensive($11,500) as it sits now. I was surprised that he didn't even really want me to try and put a deal together on it. He has talked about this car for the last 35 years. http://lstwo.com/images/31441311821578378699.jpg http://lstwo.com/images/25753290546168512474.jpg http://lstwo.com/images/00267524211102297574.jpg http://lstwo.com/images/72653527822652044978.jpg http://lstwo.com/images/88772744884025947592.jpg http://lstwo.com/images/81122382440110017426.jpg |
That car would look awesome restored. Send it to Dave, he could have it ready by MCACN!
|
Oh, wow. Great story and photos. Too bad not a happier ending though.

Wow, talk about finding a needle in a haystack.... |
Holy CRAP you HAVE to buy that car, Man!!! I tried in vain to find my Dad’s old Pontiac LeMans only to be crushed to know it had been actually crushed!!
I can’t tell you how to spend your money, but man, an opportunity to own your Step Dad’s car does not come up often and will last forever. Despite what he may say, I think he’d be really stoked to see that thing restored!!! Get it!!,:headbang::headbang::headbang: Cheers:burnout::beers: Dave |
I assume you already verified by the VIN to be 100% certain that this is / was your Step Fathers car?
Dan |
First, I would make sure it is THE car.
Secondly, put in an offer. That car isn't going anywhere any time soon at $11,500. Sad to see it in its current condition. |
Buy it.
Yes, even if you bought it and just sat on it for a while as you gathered parts it would be a wonderful family investment. Maybe your kids/grandkids would like to have it some day. I have two of my grandparents cars (75 Firebird and 71 Lincoln) and it is really cool to have my kids claim at a show that that car in front of them belonged to their great-grandparent. (whereas my great grandparents' car was a donkey cart back in Russia) |
I would echo these sentiments. On all points.
But again, it’s easy to from here. My kids can say that The Camaro was bought new by their Grandpa and The Mustang by their Dad... it is nice to see those connections. |
I hope this works out for you. I have been looking for my 1st car for 40 years or so and by chance I came in contact with a fellow selling parts. He sent me of a picture of the car he owned and it has to be the car I have been searching for. It compares with your car, rust, damage, but I left it with the current owner I want first crack at buying it when he's ready to sell. If he sells it to me I'm sure I will pay way more than it's worth but I will never miss the money, but I surely will miss not getting my hands on it again after 40years.
|
I echo the just buy it group. Imagine all the future memories that will be formed as you both bring the car back to life. Don't pass it up, you will be kicking yourselves!

Show him this picture and have him visualize driving it once more. I am sure he is turned off by it's current condition. |
I have a 69 Z/28 I have owned since 1976 with 27xxx miles. My grandsons are arguing over who gets the 69 Opel GT.
|
where in Oklahoma has it been hiding for all those years?
|
Buy it and focus on gradually accumulating parts for the restoration. Easy for me to say though - it's not my $$. I addition to the family connection, those cars have pretty good value. My buddy in Florida just sold a Super Bee clone for $29,500.00. It was column shift automatic.
I'm jealous of all these stories about cool cars that people owned back in the day. I've never tried to track down my first car - a '62 Corvair! |
Thanks everyone. I wish I could buy it right now but at that price, it's not in the cards. I have a stack of receipts for parts that I've bought the Chevelle recently and buying the Super Bee might cause a divorce. lol
I'm still working on my Step Dad so maybe it will all work out. |

If it has remained in OK all these years, and if the current owner will cooperate, there is about a 70% chance you can get the history from the Oklahoma Tax Commission back to day one. NORMALLY OTC keeps records even back into the 50s. However, when they changed over computer systems in the 80's many of the old records were "lost". I put lost in quotes, because they still have them archived, but they are on microfilm and not searchable. My 69 Z/28 has never left Oklahoma, but it is one where the records were lost.
If you can put me in touch with the current seller (and I promise you I am not going to try and buy the car out from under you guys.... I am not a Mopar guy) I can put in a request at the Tax Commission and see what we find. If it turns out it is NOT your step dad's car, then the heartache is over. Send me a PM if interested. |

I hope it turns out to be your Step-Dad's car and something can be worked out on it. This thread is another reason why this is the best site on the web.

Always find it amusing when OU is playing in a nationally televised game, and one of the announcers mis pronounces it when introducing a young man fron "Chick' uh shah" with shah rhyming with the "shah" or Iran. |
Wasn’t that the Co. beside Hazzard County?

69 Bee
I don't think I have ever seen that grille emblem on a Super Bee before.

Has your pops seen the found car in person or just said no because of the asking price? Besides the same color/top/drivetrain, does the Fender Tag include M46 Side Scoops like his car had too?:hmmm: Best of luck w/ everything! :beers: ~ Pete . |
