What I saw when I went through the Van Nuys plant in 1990 and 1992 was the control arms already had the ball joints installed. They were dipped in the paint but left the end with the ball joint unpainted. There was a definite line where the paint stopped right before the ball joint.

On the bushing washers, I agree they were painted black.

Believe that started with the 1970 model year.

We used to stock upper control arms; they were furnished with the ball joint installed after paint less shaft, bushings and hardware.

Here are photos of an original ball joint I removed from the car, my 1969 RS/Z. I replaced them with the same style.

Ball joint

Those are not the same . If you clean the grease off you can see the difference. The rivets look good .

Ball joint

The picture Lynn posted is the correct 69 ball joint.

Nice detail Lloyd those are the correct 69 assembly line ball joints. John k. Is correct....

luv2sixty9 06-03-2025 10:59 PM

Lynn has the correct 69 ball joints. The one Lloyd used are later NOS and are different with the (5) five spot welds.

Since the OP was talking about the washer and or cups. I remember taking cars apart that had smaller washers in the rear and larger in the front. Can any confirm....302MOZ -JonnyK I believe 15 years ago we discussed. I'm getting older and can't remember.
