The second generation Chevelle was introduced in 1968 and featured a shorter wheelbase with a distinctive, long hood/short deck profile which sported tapered front fenders and a new belt line. Available in various body styles including the two door coupe, four door sedan and the popular El Camino pick up, the second generation Chevelle is considered one of the best cars of the muscle car era with many arguing that the 1969 model is the most attractive of the lot.

The COPO (Central Office Production Order) spec cars were developed by Chevrolet’s Engineering Product Promotion Chief, Vince Piggins, whose staff prepared the L72 427 V8 from the Corvette and who had also previously released the COPO Camaro. The COPO Chevelle was first “offered” in 1969 for SS/D drag racing and was considerably underrated when it was described as being 425hp. GM’s internal COPO system was frowned upon by upper management who, fearing Corvette sales would plummet, did not want to release or advertise a high horsepower, big block, mid-market, production car. All in all, it is estimated that only (10) COPO El Camino’ were produced with very few documented examples still existing today. The pinnacle of the model, the 427 COPO El Camino, is regarded as one of the best factory-built muscle cars of all time. Examples rarely come to market; when they do, they are sought after by some of the most discerning collectors on the globe.

Has Copo connection cert for what that is worth. And partial build sheet that is very hard to read in the post

Charley, didn't you have a 427 el comino that you sold and then was restored by peter klutt in canada?

Carleen 02-03-2020 01:58 PM

Looks like I have one.
Old race car sold new att H&H Chevrolet Omaha.
H&H sponsored it.
Written on Firewall 427 and M22

Charley Lillard 02-03-2020 05:00 PM

It was a LS6 Elcamino, Silver, auto. I saw it in a car collection in the midwest a couple years ago.

EZ Nova 02-03-2020 08:10 PM

Looking at the description iluv69s has above. It says "SOLD AT BARRETT JACKSON FOR $220,000 IN 2006"???? I looked at the 2 auctions they had in 2006, and couldn't find it???

Anyone else see it or am I missing something?

Thanks, John

Igosplut 02-03-2020 11:25 PM

Wasn't there an L89 EL that the Mr Gasket company had?

Heard about it years back.....

EZ Nova 02-04-2020 12:09 AM

So would the 69 COPO L72 427 be the baddest Elco, or the 70 LS6 454 be??? For 1/4 mile stuff!

The F'book '69 Camino looks to be FG w/ Yenko stripe kit as screenshot pics below.
'69 Camino L89's were indeed built also possibly Copo 9511 factory 456/488 rear axle cars but I'm not a believer in this example being a factory L72 '69 Camino or any others w/o substantial facts presented, someone please lay them out if any truths to be had.

I still have the L89 ElCamino.

Igosplut 02-04-2020 01:44 AM

69 or 70? I don't remember.

markinnaples 02-04-2020 01:15 PM

So, were there actually Yenko 427 el Caminos built? Couldn't follow that on this thread. If so, wow, what a cool car that would be. The FG one above is sharp, and the stripe kit looks great on it, real or not.

Charley, that L89 el Camino sounds really cool. I must have missed it before, sounds really neat.

I'm not going to say someone didn't roll into Yenko and ask for a 427 to be dropped in his ElCo, that is a high possibility during that era, so who knows. But a COPO 427 El Camino with stripes applied by a teenage Lynn Yenko like the other Camaros and Chevelles? I will give that a hard NO and wait to be proven wrong.

JoeC 02-04-2020 02:07 PM

I have not seen any 1969 427 Yenko ElCaminos

suppose its possible if there was a costumer order for one but would need good baby pictures or paper to prove out

that green one looks like it has a lot of 1968 parts on it like ft bumper , fender and side trim ,
fender emblem

I asked earlier about the NICB and if there was anything about engine size on the Report.
But if it is not on the NICB Report, then there is no point in doing it.

There was a discussion on Team Chevelle about a Yenko El Camino
It was in 2010 and it had -68 front fender and bumper.
Makes me believe its the same El Camino

If this ElCamino was a special order build, I would think it would have AVO on the trim tag.

Roger's Kansas built COPO Chevelle has AVO on the trim tag as well as other KAS special order Chevelles

pic is Roger's Kansas built COPO Chevelle AVO tag

Baltimore built COPO Chevelles have special order numbers on the trim tag
