NHRA Streetcar Rule Changes
Not sure how many of you guys are into Drag Racing, but this is big news.
NHRA will now allowing 2014 and newer OEM cars to run 9.0/150MPH. Will just need a Level 6 Comp License, 2015 or better Snell Helmet & a 3.2A1 Single Layer Fire jacket. https://www.nhra.com/news/2021/nhra-...-legal-program |
To me now it is worth selling my Chevelle and buying a Hellcat
|
Wow!!
|
Ligenfelter,Harrell ect died running that fast.No thanks.
|
Are they saying no roll cages needed for that speed/ET???? :eek2:
(Looking at their announcement it looks like roll cages needed if its a convertoble or T-Top car.) |
You need a cage To go faster than 11:49, so I would say a certified one.
At 150mph you need laundry |

The newer cars Do Not require the roll bar at 11.49 |
No rollbar or cage required. Just a Helmet & a fire jacket.
For anything 2014 or newer down to 9 flat/150MPH. Over 150MPH the rules change drastically- the least of which is a parachute required The Demons, the Shelbys, the ZR1 Corvettes, and those sick Tesla Plaids are all capable. In fact, the Tesla will actually eclipse the 150MPH limit in the 1/4. Stock! The other thing is, modifications and aftermarket bolt-ons are not restricted. So the car doesn't even have to be stock! It used to be we could let 2008 & newer run down to 10 flat/135MPH with nothing other than a helmet & a fire jacket. No roll bar or cage or any of the other safety equipment we require on anything older faster than 11.50/120MPH. But I regularly had to shut 2008+ guys down because they went faster than that. I'd give them a warning and tell them it slow it down, and if they did it again they were all done. You would be amazed how many street cars can drive into the tech lanes these days, and will easily run deep into the 9's and 8's. It's not just a few either- it's a lot. I've even tech'd stuff that drove 50 miles to the track and then crank off in the 7's. You want to talk about sick! I've got some seriously fast stuff in my stable- but I've got nothing that even comes close to holding a candle to 7 or 8 second performance. |
I can drive an hour to the track on 19" tires on stock rims with the ac on and run 8;50s. Talk about a muscle car...
|
I’ve raced for years, fools go over 120 with standard belts and no cage,
Someone tells you to jump of a cliff you going to do it? Concrete walls win every time. |
Rule makes a lot of sense though the year cutoff is arbitrary.
Some of the guys sharking their heads in here, gotta remember you can't compare the safety of a 2018 Camaro and a 1968 Camaro stock. Add in all the airbags that a newer car has.. They are pretty safe. |
It's really unbelievable just how fast all the new stuff is.
But the real kicker is these Teslas. They really are very impressive performers. Now I'm not an electric guy. Don't get the wrong idea. Never will be. No interest whatsoever. I'm old school to the very core. I like big cubes, high compression, multiple carbs, solid lifters and 4-speeds. That's my thing. I'm a dinosaur and I know it. But I have to say that I have watched these Teslas spank some pretty impressive high performance iron- mercilessly. How'd you like to be the guy who just dropped a bunch of coin on a new Demon? Flawless Black, badass with 800HP- dude is thinking he's the man- and there's nothing on the street that's gonna touch that thing. He knows this because he's been around a long time playing with fast cars- and it's way faster than the old 427 Camaro he still has back home in the garage that he used to rule the streets in. And that car was freaking fast back then- running in the mid-low 11's. So the Dude lines up against some kid driving his Dad's Tesla. He's not too worried at all. Dude's gonna let it all hang out, as usual- and just let that Supercharged Hemi eat. The tree comes down, and the Dude cuts a perfect light- and gets a good clean launch on the drag radials. He's leaving hard on a solid mid-low 10 second run. But to his amazement- that Tesla instantly grabs 2 car lengths on the Dodge and keeps pulling away. And all the Dude can see is a good view of Tesla tailights- all the way to the return road. That, my friends, is seriously heart-breaking. https://www.motortrend.com/features/...-quarter-mile/ |
Tesla has been 8.99 with weight reduction in FL, local guy has been 9.30.
I've seen this local guy run folks from a dig and a roll. His Plaid pulls hard from a roll too, just leaves cars in the dust. |

...and then the Tesla driver celebrates by doing donuts in a puddle of water that still has some winter road salt residue in it, and it shorts out then bursts into flames that can't be extinguished by any commercially available fire extinguisher. So to make the best of a bad situation, the Demon driver pulls over, brings out a bag of marshmallows and two sticks and they share some smores together. Now that's the brotherhood of street racing. :-) |
NJSteve.....I can't stop laughing....how true.
Here's to the smell of burnt race fuel, tires melting, mega compression, sounds of engines and transmission screaming as they get pushed to the edge and just good old tough ass looking cars. If it doesn't check these boxes, you ain't got a race car. You have a electric slot car. Just my two cents, Paul |
