Goes to Auction at May INDY LOT R335
Rumors say circumstances of the sale might be somehow associated with the "Canadian controversy" discussed here in another thread. Car however needs little introduction AND has celebrity ownership history:CharleySucks: https://www.mecum.com/lots/SC0522-50...n-convertible/ |
And just to confirm it’s original paint as the ad states?
|
Mr. Lillard can speak directly as to the condition of the car.
Based on my short drive that I took in the car, it appeared to be a time capsule right down to the original Cambell Ewald supplied door decals which were in the exact same positions as photographed at the Speedway in 1967. |
Years ago it used to say Dan Young Chevrolet on both quarters. I don't know if that was painted on or a decal. Maybe this is the reasoning for asking about original paint?
|
1/4’s repainted as well as tail panel and header panel. When they did a Pace Car reunion at Indy they had Dan Young repaint the 1/4's. Was hit in rear while pacing a race. Header panel when someone backed into it. Amazing car.

The snow coming down adds a nice touch.

I always had a nagging question about the legitimacy of the front top header panel due to the emblem placement. The lower header valance under the bumper does look completely original. |

The other thing I noticed is that someone added door edge guards.

Finally, I think when the quarters were repainted they color matched the pin stripe to the length of the body on both sides to the color that they used on the repainted rear quarters. Its more of a match to the Marina Blue on the nose instead of the bright blue striping color that was used at the factory.

Here Chevrolet Brass are soaking it up on a parade lap prior to one of the 2 separate race starts. The guy in the back seat was filming footage for the Chevrolet "Old Brickyard" film.
That's right, this specific car paced the race on two separate days at the start of the race Tuesday May 30 and Wednesday May 31, 1967. |
Here is the Chevrolet "Old Brickyard" film.
Pace car action starts 2 minutes in... . |

Firestone and Goodyear were used by the entire commitment fleet on roughly a 50/50 basis. Wide ovals and Speedway’s. The Firestone guys wipped out white crayons and had bragging rights. |

Behind the scenes raged the tire wars.... and the manufacturer's wars as well. Locking gas caps were needed as well as hood locks. Tampering with the pace car was a real concern to Chevrolet.

Those were gold letter tires. Here is the unused spare.

That was a great video.

The Firestone racing tires in '67 had gold letters and a gold pinstripe.

The tires were always a mystery. We assumed that the engineering rebuild order would have specified a tire swap, so when we interviewed Dave Welday he gave us the opinion that the tires were simply crayon marked because the engineering rebuild order would have had a an approved tire substitution for track use directly from Chevrolet engineering-- But as we can see that's exactly what happened going from D all the way to E, the label on the spare shows that the tires were sourced locally from a tire dealer in Speedway Indiana... Now looking at the comparisons look at the size difference on the sidewall size from #92 to the tires used on the rest of the firestone equipped cars...that's exactly what happened. Thanks Charley:flag: |

Looking through the photos here is the source evidence provided to Welday that led to the conclusion that they must have been crayoned.
Here is a pace car upon arrival. It obviously is tab marked to avoid confusion by ZONE personnel AND is pictured here wearing an apparently entirely different set of tires. |
"the label on the spare shows that the tires were sourced locally from a tire dealer in Speedway Indiana... "
Not sure what you mean. The label reads to me like it was shipped from Firestone in Ohio to Firestone tire and Rubber Racing Division in Speedway City Indiana. |
See post 21 above..Just a poor attempt on my part of being a smart A$$

More pictures from the month of May during time trials... looks like it is still rolling on its original tires here.

Literally everybody who was anybody was in the car. There is Harlen Fengler helping the Jan Cruse out of the car.

And this photo also likely shows the car again during the month of May Before the E gold letters were swapped on - still rolling on its original tires.

And this image is likely an alternate view seconds later from the other side of the car as pictured in post #29 on page 3... Tires have been already swapped at this point.

Wow, some very cool photos in this thread. Thanks for sharing.
