Always nice to see these cars getting the respect they deserve .

bergy 01-13-2023 11:50 AM

I agree. Also, original engine RAIV T/A! Can't be more than a handful of those still around.

useless tony 01-13-2023 05:19 PM

I can't imagine that steering wheel is correct for that car. I assume it is but it sure doesn't look right to me.

Edit again: I stand corrected, it has come to my attention that the steering wheel was definitely an option/available on a '69 Trans Am. Thank you to those who brought this to my attention :)

turbo69bird 01-13-2023 05:35 PM

As I recall , that wheel was an Option on the trans am. I’m
Mainly more info RAIV birds myself because of the colors but have seen that wheel in other 69 trans ams

Per Rocky Rotella’s “Definitive Firebird and Trans Am Guide 1967-1969” the Forumula steering wheel was in development all during 1969 but not released until September ‘69.

Idk but I know there’s only 1 of these . :-)
And I love her ! Me and this baby been through a ton of racing together at tracks all over the place.
So happy I was one of the few people to get to drag race one of these before they went to full on trailer queen status

Edit: just did a Google search and that is definitely not the correct wheel.

You and Google are incorrect.

I had a 69 RA4 TA automatic, matching #'s very rare, i still have a copy of my NY regi and original build sheet, it states formula wheel, and the rarest part of the wheel was the horn emblem! it was a amfm / deluxe interior. Sold it after a bad resto, plus when it was media blasted it looked like the quarters were in a machine gun fight! sold about 2006, who knows but every car I bought I drove and purchased because I wanted it and knew they were special, not as an investment, now i am much older and still crazy!!

RamAirBirds 01-13-2023 11:05 PM

YES, That was the first car the Formula Wheel was available on. Not available on any TA until September is correct.
The early 2 page advertisement showed a car with the MOMO wheel on it while they were still developing this wheel. Lots of history in the wheel development.

and a 1 million $$ judge

turbo69bird 01-18-2023 07:23 PM

Yeah I can’t believe there’s a million dollar judge especially since typically the birds (from what I’ve seen) have brought more than the GTOs. But most birds change hands discretely not at auctions .

RPOLS3 01-19-2023 12:36 PM

The million dollar Judge (and all the others he sold there) were owned by a guy right here in Rockford......

Today is this the one we were discussing above?

$357k

Jonesy 05-19-2024 12:58 PM

The 2024 Mecum car has auto trans, the 2023 Mecum car that started this thread is a 4 speed, so I would say no.

turbo69bird 05-19-2024 01:48 PM

No I meant the one Magiman said he owned at one time. Just above my last post not the first in at $440. Sorry maybe I should have clarified.

Yes, "Formula Steering Wheel" was available on all models with P/S. The red '70 SJ Charley & I owned had that option.

Rsconv68 05-19-2024 04:27 PM

Pretty car. Worth that kind of money? Only to the buyer.

Idk what that’s supposed to mean exactly ? 2 others have fairly recently sold for $440k so apparently they ARE worth that kind of money to a few buyers. Isn’t that the actual definition of what something is worth? What people will pay.

----I'd love to put one on my 69, but of course, it wouldn't be correct. I'll have to live with the optional deluxe wheel it came with. Loved that red SJ you two had!....Bill S
