DZ Stamped engine in a C10
1 Attachment(s)
I have a 350ci in my 1969 C10 or so I thought. It is stamped V0313DZ with casting code 3970010. The engine is in the running truck so difficult to see anything else. Would you say this is actually a 302ci Z28 engine?
|
Would suspect a restamp. Have never seen an 010 block before April.
Machine marks are running left to right. Should be N & S as broach marks. Would bet that if measured from the crank centerline, the deck is less than 9.025 inches, indicating it has been decked. Position of the stamp is not correct. I am certain others will chime in. |
I wonder what is the casting date on the back of the block? Should be a week or so before 3/13.
|
Looks like the broach marks are running the wrong way and it is not a similar stamp to my DZ the week before
|
Check the casting date. If it is pre March 13, 1969, I believe it will be the earliest known 010 block out there. I have never seen one dated prior to April, 1969. Not saying they don't exist. Just haven't seen one.
|
If that was an MO block found in a Chevy truck,...it could be mine.
|
That is a restamp for sure. It is not consistent with other legit stampings.
|
Will try and twist around to see the casting date. Is there a legit reason an engine gets restamped such as after deck machining?

small block
Why would you restamp a DZ motor and then put it in a pickup truck :hmmm:
|
Likely just a coincidence that it ended up in a truck.
Probably restamped to make a fake Z/28, then the fake Z was wrecked. |
BTW, I am really interested in knowing the casting date on this one when you get around to checking it out.

Should get the truck back from repair shop and try to see back there today - truck was just purchased last month - had sat a year and little maintenance done over the last decade or two. Changing all fluids, belts, hoses & tune-up parts. Had the town carburetor guru revive it this week: Adjusted carb - set timing - rejetted - was way rich at idle - and way lean at RPM - both conditions fouling the plugs. Valve train checked good. Compression checked good: 1 - 175 .... 2 - 165 3 - 165 .... 4 - 170 5 - 180 .... 6 - 175 7 - 175 .... 8 - 175 |
Very nice. I am digging the truck. Prefer the 67 with no trim, but like this body style clear through 72... trim or no trim.
Do you have all the AC pieces to make it functional? |
OMG...:eek2:
My WANT meter needle hit the end post so hard it broke off and crashed thru the glass. 1969 is my dream year and that color combo is gorgeous !! I have 2 '67 C10's I'll sell to Lynn, you keep that engine for a muscle car and I'll come get the truck.. how's all that sound... |

Thanks guys - That Copper color is........ MARVELOUS isn't it. Looked high and low multiple times a day for months and walked away from a few. Looked a coil sprung C20 trucks too. Even came with an extra NOS grill. Now that it has been massaged for 3 weeks, a very good running, sounding and riding truck. No joy on the A/C parts.
OK - Took 8 tries and some flexing of my 65 year old body but here is the date code. E 20 9 appears to be....... |
Difficult to read, but looks like E 30 9, which would be May 30, which makes sense for an 010 block as they didn't come into use until mid April.
That means, even if the stamp wasn't in the wrong place, and even if it had not been decked, it could not have been assemble in March. |
cool truck!
