Parts taken off 69 L78 to get it running

5 Attachment(s)
Car sat for many years and these parts were replaced to get it running for sale.

I am going to put them back on.
Looks to be the factory installed stuff to me.

What say you?

Is the cap a no R type because the distributor is fairly early???

Got a pic of the inside of the cap?

No but I can get one later today. What am I looking for?

1967 4K 07-16-2024 03:46 PM

Just see what kind shape the rotor button contact points look like. The rotor button looks good IMO.
That dab of purple paint on the dist. has got me thinking 🤔. It might be a factory inspector mark. Others may know something about it.
Been a long time since I’ve fooled with caps. There’s non R, R caps, non patent pending, patent pending and just AC DELCO. Different years for different lettering. Probably go to the CRG site and get that info.
The 499 distributor is definitely very cool 😎!!!
What’s the build date of the car?

Kurt S 07-16-2024 03:52 PM

The purple stripe was color ID for the engine plant. Many different colors used.

1967 4K 07-16-2024 04:59 PM

Thanks Kurt, I knew that had some significance. If it was mine I’d try to keep that mark when cleaning up the piece.

Distributor is as clean as it is going to get.
Car had 24,124 miles on it when we picked it up. It now has 24,779 miles.
Not going to restore or repaint it.

Pic of inside of cap.

The points and condenser were Echlin so did not bother with them.
Plug wires were changed also.

Thanks to all.
Dave

Cap looks good to me. Keep us posted as the clean up continues. I’m a big block fan especially the L78’s. 👍
The reason I ask about your cars build date was to see how close the distributor date was to the car. It’s an early 499.
Thanks,

Mr70 07-16-2024 11:10 PM

Was it mentioned elsewhere and I missed it?
Do we know the Cowl tag assembly date of this car?
How about the Tonawanda engine assembly date behind the Alt.or maybe down by the oil filter instead?

Lynn 07-17-2024 12:11 AM

I don't believe the rotor is original.

E stood for "emission" unless I am uninformed. Slightly larger gap between rotor and cap terminal.

Did I miss a previous post about your car - looks pretty cool and I'm sure others would like to know more about it.

Thank you

Lynn 07-17-2024 02:06 AM

Agree. More pics!

daveg 07-17-2024 02:55 AM

Link to thread about it on Team Chevelle added to post 1.
Work in progress but many dates- numbers there already.

If rotor is wrong what do I need to look for?
Points- condenser were Echlin and wires were generic so rotor is for sure a possibility.

Do not care about judging standards. Only what was on it new.

daveg 07-17-2024 03:16 AM

Thanks Lynn. Estate car so no questions could be asked. Did get records with it but nothing about this. Will keep all as it came with car but now we need to add a cap and rotor to the list.

This is exactly why we are here.

Unless I missed it in the Team Chevelle thread. What are the plans for the car? Restoration, preservation or ??? Cool find

daveg 07-17-2024 11:20 PM

Car is not getting restored or repainted. We cleaned it up underneath and just oiled everything. Not car show people but realized this was an exceptional example and others may want to see it's details. Reason for the threads. We ar working at getting it as close to how it was on 2/26/69 when Gerald picked it up. As you can see we are not hiding it's imperfections and are showing any replaced parts. Found a dist cap with "R" on it. Same as one on dist other than the "R". Odd the cap on dist was older than car. Looks almost new and car has 24K miles. Anywayz all parts taken ofg are being saved. There are other links in the Team Chevelle thread for more info on "OLE BLUE".

Needs some cleaning but contacts look really good.
A little overspray to clean off but that is easy.

"ROTOR X" rotors in NOS sealed boxes are available.
Hard to see in a sealed box.
Is the right one like this replaced one without the "E"?

fuel pump

Fuel pump off it.
Works but is quite stiff.
Who can rebuild it without making it pretty?

Found this in carb.
Power valves and accelerator pump were STIFF.
Ran but a little sick.
This is how it was when shee bought it.
Test drive was a little shaky.

All good now.
Went down slightly from factory specs on power valves and jets.
All it gets is 110 racing gas and it likes it.

Plug wires are repops.
Working on a NOS set but not complete yet.

Dist not changed yet and smog hoses are 71 in pic.
69 hoses were not on yet.

He will rebuild and not restore.
This has been a good reminder that I need mine rebuilt as well.

daveg 07-19-2024 11:17 PM

Stereo is good.
Thanks and it will head his way Monday.

Was wondering what to do with it.
Did not dare use it as stiff as it is.
Accelerator pump and power valves were very stiff also.

THANKS again
Dave

daveg 07-19-2024 11:36 PM

Just talked to Fred.

 All handled

THANKS

Before pics are here and will post after pics when back.

"Survivor" service is $275.00 with $30.00 return shipping for any interested.

Fred said the return time is quicker on this type rebuild without plating.
Said it should look pretty much the same.

"R" distributor cap cleaned up nice.
Aircraft stripper made short work of the overspray.

Factory points should have the old Delce Remy on top of arm?
Condenser same on end?
May as well get them too.

Info says these points are the stiffer spring ones for HP motors?

Thanks for the heads up.

Looks good to me. Are you pleased with the results? Looks like all the patina is untouched and still looks as original. Can you post a pick if the back where he has to slice it to get the bottom off?
Thanks for sharing.

Great car. I looked at it when it was for sale on ebay, in Ohio. Lots of great originality and an interior to die for.

Good luck getting it up and going. You are doing the right thing for that car.

Phil Woj.

PS. My 69 L89 Chevelle came from Merrick as well.

more random pics. Better view of starter heat shiels and floor after first round of cleanup. There was a short "barn find" write up on this car when it was for sale on epay. Described as rotted out doors etc and maybe some originality. Doors look rotted out to you? Crappy looking floors cleaned up very well. Mainly staining. That clip and crappy looking pics just about scared us off also but very glad we bid on it. Did not know it was a MSS until I drove it. No mistaking a low mile M22 whistling for you.

Hawkeye 09-26-2024 07:58 PM

Great photos

Great detail photos. Thanks for sharing. Is there a particular product you are using to clean the rust off?

Thanks,
Marty

daveg 09-27-2024 12:03 AM

Gibbs oil and a soft brass toothbrush. Coarse ore stainless hurts paint. Fine steel wool works well also.
