1968 L89 Camaro BAT
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/19...camaro-ss-113/
Been restored a while but has big bid already. I was not crazy about the window sticker |
That was my first question Bill. Is that WS legit?

Please educate

I know we don’t want to give out too much information so that the fakers can learn. But, can you please educate me on what you see wrong with this window sticker? I’d like to gain a little knowledge.
Cheers, Marty |
I am by no means an expert but if you compare it to some known real ones, I believe it is missing some important numbers.
I also wondered why the type is so clear |

My 1969 Pace Car window sticker. The real deal.
|
Yep a very incorrect reproduction!
|
Beautiful low mileage, nicely optioned L89! Wow!
|
Shouldn't the options be listed in Numeric order like TimG's WS?

The torn edges are comically consistent all the way around.

And the type and lettering are incredibly bold and black and in mint condition, while the paper looks like the dead sea scrolls - hilarious fake.
|
So is the car real?

As MRays reported here a couple months back, this car Bid to $100,000 but No Sale at the 05/24 Mecum Auction, link here… https://www.mecum.com/lots/1115141/1...camaro-ss-l89/ Check out this 1997 YouTube video of subject vehicle before restoration… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVUqj1qz4HE VIN 124378N472754 :beers: ~ Pete . |
I remember seeing this car for sale some years ago by We Be Autos and I could never get a good look at the stamp and broach marks. Car looked really nice though. I will see if I can find the video.
Could this be the same car? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMJ-p7Rz67w Here is the video I saw some years ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiB1Tg6o46I Paul |

Took a quick look for Old Newspaper Ads by Delivering Dealer Lou Awald Chevy, close but no luck w/ subject L89 although lots of Ads for other great cars that rolled through their operation. :beers: ~ Pete . |
A Shipping Report would confirm the dealer that ordered this Camaro. The window sticker would have the same dealer's name on it as the shipping report. That wouldn't confirm much, but a different dealer name on the shipping report would be a knockout punch.

WS is a bad fake that wasn't with the car til recently.
I think the engine and trans are restamps. POP may be real. |
Oh my.
|
Car has a letter from Bob Harris from about 1998 when it was restored. Documents original L-89 and original protecto plate, but nothing about the drivetrain or window sticker.
|
Interesting how the vin side of the pad is really cut up and the other side is not. Almost looks like you can make out more numbers but that is a mess
|
If I were selling a car with an original POP, I would not cover up the name or the address.
One of the most common tactics they use on fake POPs is a non existent address. Also very common to use a name of someone who recently died. I am NOT saying this is a fake POP. Just don't know of a valid reason why they are covering up name and address. |
If I wanted to document that it was a real L89 car why didn't they include the engine and trans in the original 1997 video as they were gone. Could have been blown up or stolen as happened to many of them.

The POP address is 833 Tonawanda St, Buffalo NY.
Hard to tell if the upstairs could have been residential back then. I thought it was notable how Bob's letter never mentions the drivetrain. |
Reserve Not Met @ 98K.

Several buildings here in downtown Guthrie are like that. Business downstairs, residence upstairs.
In fact, some of them are still apartments up there to this day. That pedestrian door on the left likely leads to a stairway that goes to the upstairs. Correct me if I am wrong, but with the engine and trans being likely restamps, that POP is the only thing we have that "confirms" it as a true L-89 car, right? If I owned the car, I would be tracking down the original owner. Easy enough to fine the owner of 833 Tonawanda St, Buffalo NY. Question would be whether the property was owner occupied or rented. But if building owner name and car owner name are the same; then it is just a matter of finding heirs / relatives to confirm early ownership. Remember the fake 10 10 L89 that Edward O'Donnell sold at Mecum in 2014 or so? Every bit of that car was fake. Fake POP with a real name and address of a deceased person. That person (Kenny) NEVER owned such a car. The only new car he ever bought was a Nova. Whoever faked the car probably got all Kenny's info from the Nova paperwork, created fake dealer docs, fake WS etc. Car had a fake tag, restamped engine and trans. Didn't even start life as a black car. Pretty sure title was "washed" and run through Georgia where they don't title antique cars. https://www.yenko.net/forum/showthread.php?t=124851 So, pretty easy to do of you are sleazy enough. Not saying that is the case with the 68 on BAT, but I would certainly do a LOT of homework before purchasing, even if I could live with a restamped motor. |
