2025 Chevrolet Traverse
1 Attachment(s)
My daughter just picked up a brand new 2025 Traverse. I know there were some issues with the older v6 power plants (although her two previous 2018 and 2021had no issues). This 2025 has the 4cyl turbo which grenaded at 700 miles on their first family trip. The SUV just suddenly shut off with just electrical faults last Saturday. This was a nightmare with 4 young children, with youngest 11 months old.
The dealer had no loaner rental that could accomodate 6 passengers so they went to a rental company to get back home. Today Thursday they finally worked on the car and dropped the pan! Unfortunately no real sense of urgency at dealership or corporate. They are replacing engine and turbo. We shall see how long this takes. Quite disappointing... especially for one who loves Chevrolet. |
Definitely a safety issue especially if you are on a busy highway with your family on board and the vehicle just shuts off. Good to hear your loved ones are OK.
This has been happening to other manufacturers not only Chevrolet. Toyota issued a safety recall on there new 3rd Gen Tundra's and replacing over 100K engines free of charge. People are still driving their trucks knowing they could die at any time. |
Steve
I agree our kids and grand children need reliable transportation. I bough our daughter a well taken care for used Volvo Wagon last August. On their first road trip it failed. No more I said. They now have a 2025 Toyota Hylander. Paul |

That must have been very frightening for her and her children. I would be very upset about it. I bet there are more cases out there that we just don't hear about. If I was her I would file a compliant with the NHTSA. You can report a vehicle safety issue to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) by: Visiting NHTSA.gov, Calling the Vehicle Safety Hotline at (888) 327-4236, and Mailing a letter to NHTSA. https://www.nhtsa.gov/report-a-safet...rc=aw.ds#index |
This is why we went German for our new SUV purchase... not saying it can't happen to any brand or model, but I feel the non-made in USA GM cars can be hit or miss.
So glad no one was hurt Steve! Very scary on the NYSTW with heavy truck traffic too! |
I just picked up an Acadia Denali with the 4 cyl turbo! I hope this is an isolated problem as I just drove to Florida from New York! Put almost 4,000 miles on it already! Good luck with the warranty claim. My daughter had her 4 cylinder turbo mustang grenade on her at 12,000 miles. Warranty covered everything!

That's wrong and dangerous. I don't understand in this day and age why Chevrolet/GM would be making engines that fail that quickly, but, that could probably be said for many of the manufacturers these days. Disheartening to say the least.

Steve, very thankful your family is safe. |
Why in the world would they put a 4 cylinder in a vehicle that almost weighs 5,000 lb? Adding a turbo to that 4 cylinder is just going to make it work that much harder.
I wouldn't walk across the street to get one for free. |

The turbo 4 has been the base engine in 1500 series pickups for several years now. These engines have been around long enough for any bugs worked out and improvements to have been made that they shouldn't be having catastrophic failures like Steve's daughter experienced, that's inexcusable.
I would demand a different replacement vehicle. |
I love this country & would die defending it. After reading about the poor quality and ridiculous service response, I have to question whether or not we’re ready to bring a lot of manufacturing back here. IMO decades of woke, DEI corporate & education policies have seriously wounded our manufacturing and service sectors. Elon seems to have re-introduced good engineering & manufacturing integrity though. Maybe meritocracy will return & prevail.
This is a huge subject with lots of differing opinions - forgive me if I’ve offended anyone. As a great mentor once told me - “eat the meat & spit out the bones” :-) |
U couldn't give me a _____tesla.
|
I own a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4-wheel drive with the 4-cylinder engine gets 10 -12 MPG city driving made it to 6000 miles so far, no problems
|
My understanding is the engine assembly had 4 in stock and all allocated. The estimated lead time is 2 months. My daughter received info via AI response. I called customer service provided case # and forwarded to a voicemail and left message this morning. Awaiting call back...

I’ll always be loyal to GM because they were there for me when I needed a hand. They enabled me to get my first engineering degree via GMI & sent me to graduate school at their expense. However, I do recognize the reality of how badly their service has deteriorated over the years. Small example - my Denali got a recall for a software update. I called the selling dealer & was told that I could drop it off next week (update would take 2 hours - so impractical to wait). If I wanted a loaner car, my appointment would be in 2 1/2 weeks!
Now for first hand examples of the competition: 1. My wife’s Lexus SC430 is literally 21 years old (summer car with 42k miles). When she takes it in for service, they don’t even ask if she wants a loaner car until she drops her car off. They just give her a loaner on the spot (no charge). 2. When I told my son that I had to drop the Denali off for a software update, he was shocked! He said that his Tesla gets software updates while it’s sitting in his driveway. I empathize with Steve’s daughter soooo much. My experience is just inconvenience. Her experience put the family at risk. It just sucks that GM has gotten to this point :-( |
My 2024 Silverado also needs a software update, and the dealer said i would have to leave it for the whole day. No loaner car provided
|
So discouraging to see this Steve.
As others have said, thank God all are safe. Like so many of you guys, I feel an emotional loyalty to GM, especially Chevrolet. GM has gone through a few cycles of getting their butts kicked, then bouncing back to bring some really good products to market. Hopefully, they turn this around. In contrast, read post #23 in this thread: https://www.yenko.net/forum/showthre...hyundai&page=3 126k miles, NOT the original owner, and they still stepped up. Hyundai even gave Zack a loaner!!! The contrast in customer service is simply staggering. This statement also boggles my mind: "I own a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4-wheel drive with the 4-cylinder engine gets 10 -12 MPG city driving made it to 6000 miles so far, no problems" I get better mileage in my 04 Yukon XL Denali, with all wheel drive; and it has a 6.0 which is notorious for bad mileage! |
GM customer experience!!
The executive committee handling this case is slow walking . A week later still have not provided a 7 passenger equivalent loaner. They offer $44 reimbursement for rental vehicle. They only state this is the best they can do and refuse to provide contact information to escalate the case.
I'm in FL so they are using our cars in NY. The dealer working on the car provided this to my daughter: chevrolet traverse engine that is on backorder Search instead for how long to receive a chevrolet traverse engine that isnon backorder Al Overview A Chevrolet Traverse engine on backorder could take several weeks to several months to receive, depending on the current supply chain situation, the specific engine part needed, and the dealer's inventory levels; with some reports indicating waits of up to two months due to potential shortages and high demand. |
Demand a new vehicle.
They will have access to that. |
I second that. Lemon Law, Goodwill Adjustment, or something. Be the squeaky wheel.
Last resort, arrange to meet a local TV news crew across the street, that should get their attention. Cripes, it's only on it's second tank of gas. I wouldn't want it back.... |

700 miles, would think it's worth pursuing the Lemon Law.
|
Lemon covers repetitive problems. At this point (as irritating as it may be) is an issue that is covered under warranty. No different than the cars we love that have a CE or an SR block under warranty 50 plus years ago

This is a completely different deal. You bought a new vehicle, and it was defective almost immediately. They are telling you they cannot fix it. Demand a refund or a new vehicle. The above is sound advice. Pretty easy to make them look really bad here. I would scream bloody murder if they did this to Ann. |
‘
Tell them to replace it immediately or you’re sending a Tow Truck to take it to a Competitive Brand Dealership who very much wants to allow what you paid for it towards one of their obviously better built vehicles also provide a courtesy car until the day you take delivery. Apparently, they also have big plans for the Traverse which they don’t plan to fix but put on tour also well publicize your whole story including how GM treats new customers. ~ Pete . |

You have the high ground. Take advantage of it. They are not being nice to you!!! |
An Uncle of my wife's worked his entire career at a GM plant. He has always owned and driven GM ... until a few years ago.
He went to a GM dealership, interested in trading in. He wasn't happy with the $$ they offered for his present GM car and he was less than impressed with how many times he heard "oh, that doesn't come standard so it'll be $_____ extra" when pricing out a new GM replacement. Due to his dissatisfaction with the way things were going, as well as not feeling like he was being treated fairly/decently, he called an end to the discussions and walked (well, drove) away. After taking a few days to think about his ordeal at the GM dealership, he starts to wonder how other manufacturers might treat him so he takes his car and heads to a Honda dealership. Honda offers him more money for his trade-in than GM did AND all those extra's he wanted? They came standard on Honda cars. One other thing he wanted that GM balked at ... Michelin tires. GM wasn't interested whereas the Honda salesman said "hey, if Michelin tires is what it takes for you to buy this car, consider it done". Needless to say, the Uncle happily traded in his GM on a new Honda and, four years or five years later, he has traded that Honda in on ... yeppers, yet another Honda. He loves them. If GM is treating people poorly AND selling sub-par product ... well ... that's not a good recipe for a long and profitable future. As for the GM Turbo 4 ... I am hoping the failure mentioned in this thread is an isolated event as my in-laws just purchased a 2025 Equinox with that tiny engine (apparently they didn't learn anything from the Uncle about buying GM). Fingers crossed the miniscule engine holds up. I say 'miniscule' because I used to have an 1100 cc motorcycle bored out to 1260 cc way back when, this "car" engine is barely larger. |

We have had 2021, 2023 and now a 2024 Equinox's.
Zero trouble. 2021 got hit in driver's door at 56 mph by a 2020 GMC 1500 4d 4wd. In a 35-mph speed zone. Curtain and seat air bags saved me. Look at windshield post. That was his hood hitting there and the only thing between his hood and my head was the air bag. Seat bag saved my rib cage, and my pelvis broke the door panel also. Dash was crushed also. See pics. I was driving and Ann was in pass seat. She got 2 broken ribs from my pelvis bending- breaking console to the right 3 ". No broken bones for me. Very sturdy car. Friends' wife has a 2019 with 187,000 on it. Brakes, tires and battery the only repairs needed so far. We have factory trailer hitches on ours. They work fine. Personal experience tells us you have a somewhat isolated problem. Another indicator is the number of used 2018- newer engines available. Pages and pages with some in OH having only 6- 12 miles on them. Cheap also. The super low mile ones are out of test cars that were damaged. They cannot be sold complete- only parted out. Very different story with 2017 and older. ADDING All that said I am not schilling for GM and would get really aggressive like Pete suggested as what they are doing is pure BS. ADDING- the "A" pillar [where front door bolts to body] is by far the sturdiest point of side of vehicle. Crushed it [and the "B" pillar [where rear door bolts to body] but did not let the front of the pickup enter passenger compartment. Both did their job. |
My neighbor had total engine failure in her new High Country Tahoe, the dealer gave her a loaner, she had it for a couple months.
At a minimum I'd want a loaner, did you guys contact the GM of the dealership? I'd give that a shot. If nothing happens, maybe you should make a YT video with the dealer name in the title, keep it factual. |

I want to thank the members who have reached out with suggestions and support.
I was really torn when I posted the engine failure of my daughter's 2025 Traverse. The case was escalated to the customer service executive committee and they have provided a loaner and have approved the repurchase of the the Traverse. This is what I expected from GM initially, however I am pleased and so is my daughter's family. Btw this is her 4 Traverse and believes she will continue. In fact when I return to NY I will be purchasing a GM SUV in the spring. |
Great news Steve.
|
That is really great news!!
|
Great to hear that outcome.
|
Good to hear things have moved forward in a positive way.
|
Excellent news. Glad GM came through for your daughter
