Changing original interior color to black
I know exterior color changes for documented numbers matching cars are generally frowned upon by the concours crowd. How about interior color changes? I have a frame-off Cranberry Red 1970 Chevelle SS454 (LS5) with a saddle interior. I am really considering an interior color change to black which I prefer. What are your thoughts?

Re: Changing original interior color to black
Everybody has black. I'd rather have saddle.

Re: Changing original interior color to black
Depends on preference.....and on originality !!!! if the car is original.....by all means leave it!!!!!!

Re: Changing original interior color to black
My uncle has a red with saddle 70 Cutlass W-31. Like the others, I think the combo is kind of cool, too.

Re: Changing original interior color to black
i would agree keep it original as saddle is accepted and matches. try this. i had a gold LS6 with black stripes, black vinyl top and green interior, tinted glass. the car looked gorgeous in an are not well lit, pull it outside and puke. i changed the interior color to black and it made the car. if you change the interior go all the way and keep the original, the next owner will then have the option. i put the original green interior in the trunk and let the next owner decide. with the black interior i never got an objection to color because it looked obviously better. the car now resides in chicago. Re: Changing original interior color to black
Is It Bucket or Bench?
Either way,Leave it with a Saddle interior. If you have the deluxe Saddle colored seat belts, you are even better.Saddle Floor mats ar also hard to locate. A few years ago, there was a Poll on what the best 1970 Chevelle Color combo was. Cranberry Red with a Saddle interior was voted the most desired combo in ths particular poll. Kevins/Randy Millers Gold LS6 with a Green interior is even more appealing to me. It's an Unusual combo you don't see and doesn't look that bad really.... Everybody has a 1970 Red/Black. Just my .02 |

IT'S YOUR CAR, DO WHAT YOU WANT. YOU HAVE TO ENJOY IT!!

Re: Changing original interior color to black
The saddle interior is the original color. It's a bench with 4-speed. The car's on the cover of Robert Genat's book (Chevrolet SS) and I've owned it for 5 years. It's also a Silver Spinner award winner and that may contribute as to why I am heisitant to change it.

Re: Changing original interior color to black
do you remember where you saw the poll results? I know that this color combination was featured in their factory demo car and it's also the color in Motor Trend's 1970 test photo shoot.

Re: Changing original interior color to black
SS4Real,
Congrats on owning a beautiful car let alone a well known cover car and welcome to the site. As some have stated, it's your car, do what you want. However I must admit, that is one of the things I liked about that car that set it apart from all the rest. Looks great to me. Rick |

[/ QUOTE ] I think the two most important words here are [ I prefer] In any case , I don't think the " Restoration Police " would come to your house in the middle of the night and drag you off to jail for changing your interior to black. On the other hand, if your worried about points at a car show , I think it is considered an assault charge subject to appeal. |
Re: Changing original interior color to black
I prefer seeing a red/saddle interior or a red/red interior. Red/black is very common, on Camaros and Novas as well, it's nice to see different combo's. I'd leave it the red/saddle - just my $0.01

Re: Changing original interior color to black
I also have a red 70 Chevelle SS LS5 454 and my car is Cranberry Red with the black interior. I say leave it because when I usually go to cruise nights their is always a couple other 70 Chevelles with the red/black combo. I would actually perfer red with the white guts. I have changed the look on my car from stock to day 2 just because this problem. I love the look and it is good to be different.

Re: Changing original interior color to black
SS4REAL,
If you back me into a corner ,I also like the saddle /cranberry-red combo. BUT, I looked up the penalty for changing the interior on a Concours Chevelle and it is castration, Sooooooo you might want to take that into consideration. |
Re: Changing original interior color to black

Re: Changing original interior color to black
Thata boy Dom,glad to hear..and see it!
SS4real, Can you fill out your profile fully. You are a Silver Spinner winner?? What year were you at Vettefest? I attended one of the shows in either March of 1995 or 96 or 97 and met a man with his wife who had a Chevelle that fits your description very closely. It was in the upper north or south building...We talked for along time, and I still have pictures of it. Was it you? |
Re: Changing original interior color to black
No Chevelle but I would say keep the org color. Theres a 72 Convt on Ebay right now with a White interior/Red exterior and its sharp looking Red/black all to common

Re: Changing original interior color to black
Yes, the Chevelle won the Silver Spinner Award in Feb, 1996 at the Chevy Vettefest. You probably spoke to Rob & Allison Neuman who were the owners back then. I traded my Cranberry Red '70 Monte Carlo SS454 plus cash to Rob for the Chevelle in 1998. The Monte Carlo (which I restored)was no slouch either as it won Super Chevy 3 times, was an Editor's Choice top 10 pick and featured in about 10 magazines. The Monte is also included in Genat's book. I've improved a few things on the Chevelle although it was pretty stellar when I bought it. Rob has moved on to AMX's and owns a 10,000 mile original 390 AMX that is stunning. I have also learned that it's less expensive to buy a car that is done than do it yourself. Not as fun, but a lot faster than 4 years during weekends!

Re: Changing original interior color to black
As someone that owns a '70 LS6 that is Forest Green with saddle buckets, I would say leave the interior alone. I think the contrasting interior really makes the cars stand out. I've always enjoyed interiors other than black such as red, pearl, or saddle. BTW..since we are on the subject of color combos what are you guys favorites? Here are mine:
1) dk green/saddle 2) red/red 3) red/white 4) silver/black 5) black/red |
Re: Changing original interior color to black
gotta chime in on this one: black on red rules!
if i could find a 67 z28 or 67-68 supercar (read yenko, dana, nickey, harrell, b/m, thomas) in that combo, that's my next car. |
