Meadowbrook Concours De Elegance.

Spent a great day yesterday at the renouned Meadowbrook Concours car show, while the show has focus on the Duesenberg class and era cars, the organizers had invited about 12 of the "Best" muscle cars to be in attendence. I went with a friend who has recently purchased one of the 69 427 Yenko Nova's, we brought the Nova to the show and his 69 LS-7 Baldwin Motion Camaro was also on display. The first four of the following links are photos of the 427 Yenko Nova, the next four links are photos of the Baldwin Motion LS-7, the next four are of a Hemi Cuda convertible owned by the Hemi King Harold Sullivan, this was the Cuda's debut appearence. The next four links are photos of a Berger RS COPO that the Tieman restoration had just been completed on. The remaining cars invited were a "Moulan Rouge" pink 440+6 70 GTX that is the only car ever painted that color, number 66 Cortez Silver ZL-1 was on hand from Arizona, Floyd Garrett brought a 63 Impala SS 409, and a 61 Super Duty light weight Pontiac. A mid sixties 426 Wedge Polara convertible with window sticker, a 64 GTO that had the staightest black paint I have ever seen on a car, and finally a red, white, and blue 69 competition AMX completed the display. While the muscle cars were represented at Meadowbrook by a small amount of cars, it was a very impressive showing that did our hobby well. All were filmed for a upcoming segment on Speedvision.

How did the weather hold out for that show? I was going to go but I felt there may of been some rain over that way.
I really like that Nova!

Re: Meadowbrook Concours De Elegance.

Maxx,
The morning was party cloudy and the humidity was thick, the afternoon let go with one 15 minute downpour, 15 minutes later it cleared up for the rest of the day. I felt bad for the guys who had all the top flight open classics from the 20's and 30's, it's not like they could just roll up their windows. Everybody had a cover for those cars. It certainly didnt dampen the show in the aspect of attendence, the place was packed, before and after the rain. The automakers had a lot of really neat concept cars, from the thirties to present. Jim Mattison and Al Maynard are two of the organizers for the event, they and everyone else invlolved did a fantastic job as it was well organized and went off without a hitch. The show set a record for the most Duesenburgs ever in attendence at one event, they came from around the world to put 34 fine examples in one place at the same time. I have about 60 more photos from all the classes including the concept cars, if anyone is interested just let me know.
Thanks,
Motown

Talk about sharing, I had talked to Gary Dyer about buying that 69 Yenko Nova as a project. It was around $14K about 7 years ago, but since I already had one I gave the info and phone number to Gary Holub at no charge.

Ahh, I see that Brett (Payne) finally got Scott to finish that Berger car! I first met Brett and saw the car at Scott's when I was doing the "Certified Stock" tear down in '01. An unfortunate situation with his (Brett's) dad dropped the car in his lap...nice to see it done!

supercars you sure left alot of $$$$$ on the table on that one, but we all have at some point or another. on the other hand you certainly have a ton of equity in the dream car garage in washington state, BTW, do you own that state also? Car and Driver Magazine intreviewed my friend and I for the 427 Yenko Nova we brought to the show, above is a link to their website and the page the Yenko recieved recognition on. I was blowing the cobwebs out on info to give their reporter as was my friend, I hope we got the facts and numbers right guys, I know we got close. Quite a feat to be the only musclecar from this prestigious show to make the website, also the only one chosen from the muscle cars in attendance. Click on the website photo to enlarge. We tried to make all you Yenko guys proud. The car was also filmed for an upcoming segment on Speedvision.

Is it me, or do the chrome RS headlight inserts on that Berger car look odd? You normally can see the headlights through the fins int he covers... those ones almost look solid.

Actually, it is not the only one painted this color. I do not have the numbers, but I believe 7 pink GTXs were ordered for the US market. I think Sullivan's is a Canadian car, so it does not factor in. Perhaps it is the only 440 6bbl. GTX in pink that exists (according to someone who considers himself a "guru' in Mopar circles), but it's impossible to say of the 7+ made how many were 440s and Hemis.

Also, the list of Hemi convertibles from the link supplied in a previous post is just for US production. There are more Hemi rags out there - I believe there are over 11 '71 accounted for.

Diego,
I dont know for sure how many were made, just repeating what the officials were saying over the loudspeaker. I did hear someone say that another division of Mopar used the same color but called it Panther Pink.

Re: Meadowbrook Concours De Elegance.

Motown,
By any chance, were you there for the awards presentation at the end? I was speaking with a friend/judge from the SuperChevy Show series this weekend and he told me some things about the Meadowbrook Concours that were upsetting. He has judged there in the past knowing it would show well on his "judging resume'". He said "the straw that broke the camel's back" was at the awards presentation when everyone was receiving their crystal awards for the "exotic" cars the last award catagory was "American Musclecars" and the awards were considerably less than the crystal passed out to the others. He took offense to that, as I think we all would, and that was the last time he judged there. Attaboy for taking a stance against the "Snobs de Elegance"! MotownMadman 08-14-2003 07:01 AM

Re: Meadowbrook Concours De Elegance.

Rich,
I didnt notice what was being handed out as awards for the musclecars or the other catagories either, I have never been a great believer in the trophy concept anyway, the true rewards of a successful show makes all the exhibitors winners, the reward of giving all the opportunity to view your car and enjoy it for whatever it may mean to each particular person, maybe nothing more then a memory of a significant moment in time in that persons life, or a true apprieciation for fine handcrafting or precise enginneering, or as in the case of our Musclecars, a true love for the history and culture of the hobby. I find it a rewarding experience to share with everyone who comes to the show the joy of owning whatever the car may be as well as the joy of the spectator at viewing the car. In a way I have always felt that the trophys somehow take away from the whole experience as it creates people to begin to measure the worth of their car by the size and quality of the particular award, which in some cases such as this can create bad feelings and animosity which can cloud the true purpose of the hobby as a whole. This of course is only my opinion, others may hold a great deal of emphasis on the award phase of a show, but when it comes right down to it the only people we have to please with our cars and recieve recognition from is ourselves. Meadowbrook overall I felt did a fine job as everone recieved some very nice items just for coming to the show, as well as an engraved plaque that stood in front of each car which equaled many of the top awards I have seen at some shows. I think the true award at Meadowbrook came from just being invited to display your car, there were many entries in each class that were not selected to attend, and I am sure that many of those not there were very deserving. This type of show has always been geared up to the older vintage classics, for the organizers to take notice of the American Musclecar as being worthy to attend is a recognition in itself. Everyone tends to get caught up in their own segment of the hobby, sometimes to the point of not giving recognition to very worthy examples from other vehicle classes, kind of makes a person wonder how many twelve cylinder Duesenbergs or Supercharged Allards were invited to the Supercar Reunion. I am not sure how long American Musclecars have been coming to Meadowbrook, but judging from the crowds reaction I would guess our class will do nothing but grow in the future in shows such as that. It is a shame your friend feels that he would not want to be a Judge at Meadowbrook again, isint part of being a successful Judge at a car show objectivity? I certainly would not want the burden of being a Judge at a show with the scope and range of Meadowbrook, I would not be able to decide as from my perspective they were all winners, each equal in their own way.
Thanks,
Motown

Re: Meadowbrook Concours De Elegance.

Motown, no sweat at all. Sometimes these Mopar people like to fudge a little bit. Kinda like the "1 of 18" LS6 ragtops.

I've been to the Meadowbrook show a number of time as well as the Eyes on Design and they both are probably my favorite shows. The latter is especially impressive because, like Avis, they try harder. Anyone who is
ever in MI at that time should visit them. I'd go to Eyes over the Woodward Cruise any day!

This weekend is the big show in Pebble Beach, but the spectator fee is $100.
