tom, just confirmed, we will be coming to vettefest, don't know what to bring yet? ZL1 or 69 yenko nova, maybe even a surprise! back to the resto's, the thing i like about ricky's work is that it is all done in house, motor, interior, body,paint, the works, reasonably priced. under the gun we knew going to the reunion we had a few bolts and other items to tend to on the ZL1, who doesn't? wait till next time!

he only does chevys, mainly supercars, no fords allowed, at over 20 years experience, he doesn't paint firewalls and floorboards, i know you're just kidding, randy miller liked to paint floorboards on his cars of which one i've corrected (ZL1) as it was just recently redone, haven't had time to do the nova yet, but will. how's the gobi beige car these days, would like to see it! who restored it? Must be a different shop then. I wasn't kidding, I thought there was a red deuce recently restored where the owner wanted the firewall and underside painted the body color. It'll come back to me, I have sometimer's disease!

Hum, lets see, numerous Best of Show awards at the Camaro Nationals, highest scoring car EVER at the Nova Nationals, many other top awards from the nation's premier shows, or might just be the magazine covers and articles featuring SCWS restored cars. With the crop of "new" supercars turning up, I would say there are plenty to go around. And, you are right, several top notch restoration shops out there. At one time or another, I would say that most, if not all of the top shops have had a car displayed at a SCR. One of the main reasons for no judging at the event. I know I would not want that job. Hey I'm not comparing shops - just trying to piece together where the Deuces are, and what condition they are in. I keep track of the cars found, and their present condition. It has been very interesting to see the wave of Deuces proceed from the project status to the restored status, and the corresponding increase in awareness and popularity. It's just one of many things that I keep track of with the Yenko Novas.

Now, if I could just find me a '69 Yenko Nova project - I think I'll try this new shop, James Berry Restorations, but I'm not sure if he'll do a boring Yenko color [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]

How does one see the road through all that junk written on the windshields? I wonder how much research went into those 'happy marks'. Next thing you know, somebody will think it's the 'correct' way to restore. Where was the research on the 'original tires'? Polyglas? I think we've been down the tire road on the 427 Chevelles, all one has to do is read the thread! Oh my..... Good restorations require good research, otherwise you end up with a lot of people doing this [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif[/img]

the supercar workshop does superb work. when i visited you couldn't squeeze your way through the shop it had some many supercars and a waiting list of 3 years to boot. if you were in north carolina i would 1/2 of my stuff at yours and the other 1/2 at rickys. isn't this all about the hobby! no taking sides, i agree with brian there is plenty of work for everyone right now and this is good for the hobby and the enthusiasts. more power to everyone who has the ability and knowledge to do theses cars, i sure can't. hats off to brian, ricky, troy cricillis, micky hale, scott tiemen, larry christensen, and the numerous other talent out there. i see all the guys with there shops full of supercars and thats a GOOD THING! can't you guys get together and all move to greensboro, nc and open up a supercar depot?

Here's a suggestion for the board administrators. How about a new link off the home page to restoration shops that are recommended by the SYC and other forum members? From what I've observed and read here on the forums and elsewhere, I can already think of:

Mickey Hale Restorations, Ashtabula, OH
Larry Christensen's Camaros Plus, Arvada CO
Greg Donahue Collector Car Restorations, Floral City FL
Scott Tieman's Supercar Specialties, Portland MI

Troy Cricillis (sp?) location?
Frank Paine (sp?) locations?
Chuck Hubers (sp?) location?

I can understand how such an endorsement might lead to a bitching and moaning session from those restorers who think they should be listed but if you kept the list reserved for those shops whose cars have received Diamond certification, Legend certification, Duntov awards, Vettefest Spinner awards and so on, we could maybe keep the endorsements limited to only the deserving few. Or you could just say "It's my board and I'll do what I want".

Anyways, just a suggestion that I think would really help out a lot of people looking to resurrect their supercar or musclecar.

Dennis, that is one of those things that sounds good on paper, but am afraid would cause more harm then good, at least as far as the sYc's involvement is concerned. Here is why. IMO, and this is just MY opinion, as with restored cars, there is a difference in restoration shops. On the list you posted, there are 2-3 shops I would list as #1 shops, those that are the best of the best. Cars from these shops will win most, if not all, events entered. Will score very well at national, judged events and will be used as cover/feature cars in magazines. These cars are restored the way they were new, no more, no less. The shops that do this level of work have "done their homework", and it shows. Many times employees of these shops are invovled in judging at national shows, are guest speakers at seminars, do restoration articles for magazines and some are even invovled in the publishing of restoration books.

Next on the list are the #2 shops. Cars from these shops are very well done, will do well at national events, but leave a little something to be desired. This includes cars that are "over rerstored", such as too much "high gloss" paint, or ones which have correct, dated parts, but ?, or the incorrect use of paint and stencil markings, or maybe something a simple as the cars ride height is a little off. As with #1 cars, these cars will be featured in magazines. To all but a very few "purists", these cars rate at the same level as #1s.

Next are the #3 shops. These shops are for the more budget minded folks, who want a nice restoration, but, who do not care, and/or are not willing to make the sacrifice, of time and $$$, to have the car restored by a number 1 or 2 shop. These cars are still very nice show cars, will do well at regional shows and the loosely judged national shows, but will not receive high marks at the top national shows. Faults include, the use of the wrong parts, incorrect paint colors, just not the attention to detail as the others. Shops doing this kind of work are not into making sure each and every part, such as trim pieces, nuts, bolts, etc. are correct for that application. These cars will show up in magazines, but are the ones who hender the hobby some what, as most people believe what they read/see in a books and magazines. These are the cars that fuel many of the half-truths that this, and other boards, deal with on a regular basis.

Finally, the "do it your self" shop. For various reasons, time, $$$, personel satisfaction, etc, several enthusiasts would rather do the restoration them selves. The level to which these cars are restored will vary greatly, from nice drivers to #1 cars, depending on the skills of the owner. These cars will turn up in magazines, a lot of the time because the owner did do the work himself.

Which way is the best to go, and what shop to use? That is up to each and every car owner. I have my preferences, and, in the past, have shared those (off line) with numerous individuals. But, to me, the best way to decide is, do the required legwork. Attend shows, looking at cars and visiting with owners, go through magazines, past and present, surf the net, including sites such as this one, and od course, talk to any friends who have gone through the restoration process. Ask questions, and more questions. As with most aspects of the supercar hobby, reseach is the number 1 key to a quality restoration. In closing, as long as the owner is pleased in the way the car turned out, that is all that matters. After all, I have yet to see a car that someone, somewhere, did not find fault with.

And, I might add, is why the Annual Supercar Reunion is a non-judged show. We wanted it to be about ALL supercars, whether #1, 2 or 3 restored cars, unrestored, dailey driver, whatever. All are special to the sYc!!!
