Roger Penske Chevrolet
I see them listed among the 10 PA sold ZL-1s in Ed Cunneen's COPO Connection book... How many ZL-1's did Roger Penske Chevrolet in PA sell Only 1, or several? Does anyone know if any other supercars (L-72) were sold from this dealer? I saw a 67 pace car at the Camaro Superfest in Ann Arbor this summer that was sold new at Penske, and was wondering what else may have come from this PA dealer, considering Penske's racing background and Chevrolet ties. Anyone have any info on them?

Re: Roger Penske Chevrolet
I know of a local guy who special ordered a 66 427 Impala from Penske. When he took delivery, he said it felt sluggish and would not "burn posi". He felt the rear gear was not correct.
Roger himself supposedly was called over and got a floor jack out in the parking lot to crawl under. The car was orderd with a 4.10 posi and when roger checked it, it was a 308 open! That is how the sory went. The paperwork and everything reflected the 4.10 info, but somehow it was not there. The gear and posi were scheduled to be installed later that week. No cost. |

Camaro Joe,
This is off topic but do you have any information on the Camaro Superfest show. Thanks. -Dan |
Re: Roger Penske Chevrolet
My documents show Penske sold three ZL1's, #17 silver, #25 Orange and #44 Green.

Re: Roger Penske Chevrolet
I think the guy that owns Camaro Specialty in Charlotte NC owns the #25 ZL-1. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Re: Roger Penske Chevrolet
Now that you mention it, I think you're right... in fact, was this car not at SCR5? I believe its Hugger orange, mini tubbed with widened steel wheels/dog dish caps? Anyone remember it? I think it even had a Roger Penske badge on the tailpan.
*edit... I just looked at the pics from SCR5... listed as owned by Tony Young... is this the Penske ZL1 you're referring to? Penske ZL1? |
Re: Roger Penske Chevrolet
THATS THE CAR.

Re: Roger Penske Chevrolet
Yes, Tony was at SCR5 with his Orange ZL-1, and even entertained the natives at the BBQ with a long, smokey burnout .

Re: Roger Penske Chevrolet
In the mid seventies I bought a used SS big block Chevelle from the Penske dealership on Telegraph rd in Detroit. Did he have two dealerships or did he move from Pa to Detroit?
Motown |
Re: Roger Penske Chevrolet
Motown,I believe it was two different dealerships. One I think was run by a son and the other I'm not sure of....

Re: Roger Penske Chevrolet
It could have been Roger P's dealership since he is into everything. He is still in the retail car business today as the owner/founder of UAG. (United Auto Group, a big coropration like AutoNation or Sonic that owns car dealerships) Last I heard they own 100-150 dealerships in the country.

Re: Roger Penske Chevrolet
I think I remember that orange car for sale here locally about 6-7 years ago, they seller had owned it since the early '70's - was asking $65k! Spoke to him a few times, interesting car, the seller had enjoyed it throughout his ownership. Car was sold new at the Penske in Philadelphia, PA.

Re: Roger Penske Chevrolet
I believe that Mr. Hartweg worked for a Penske division called Penske Logistics? He told me this in person at Vette Fest 2002 if I remember right.

Re: Roger Penske Chevrolet
I remember talking to the owner of this car a few years back. The original engine was gone but he knew
Who had it. The guy who had the engine wanted $10,000 plus the ZL1 that was in the car. I remember It was advertised for sale for $65,000 locally about 10 years ago. Mark L |

The car was advertised in the Phila Inquirer and the Bucks County Courier Times. The owner was a real nice guy,It was also a real clean car. I tried talking a friend of mine into buying it, at the time I did not have the coin to buy it for myself…"OH WELL" Mark L |
