Vintage pics taken @ Indy in '69
1 Attachment(s)
I was fortunate enough to purchase a full envelope of original vintage photographs that were taken at the Indianapolis 500 on raceday in 1969. Although most of them are of parade festivities and miscellaneous happenings at the track, a few of the shots show the '69 Camaro Pace cars in action. I thought some of you Z-11 owners may enjoy seeing them. Pretty cool period shots. It may be tough to see in the small scanned pics, but in the actual photos you can see small lettered '69 style Firestone Wide Ovals on at least one of the track cars sitting in the pits, so they didn't all get Wide Tread GTs.

Last picture bottom right corner. Is that guy wearing a black jacket with Camaro in orange script?

Re: Vintage pics taken @ Indy in '69
Something else noticed. Are we sure this is Indy 500 raceday in the first 2 pictures? Looks like a trail of stock cars in the 1st picture. And quite empty grandstands as well.
Cool photos Erik. Thanks for sharing! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif |
Re: Vintage pics taken @ Indy in '69
Definitely not Indy cars but I never saw a Nascar race where they had headlights on either !!! Maybe drying the track
|
Re: Vintage pics taken @ Indy in '69
That's right. The track is wet in the 1st 2 photos but not in the remainder of them. Does it look like the same track??
|
Re: Vintage pics taken @ Indy in '69
probably during qualifying and they needed to try and dry the track..there are more than a few cars in the photo.
|
Re: Vintage pics taken @ Indy in '69
It definitely looks like two different days. Everything looks dry in the second set of pics. That field of cars almost looks like it could be a parade of Camaros. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Re: Vintage pics taken @ Indy in '69
69 Indy 500 side note: Rain delayed Pole day on Sat the 17th. Only one car made an attempt for the pole, rookie Jigger Sirois. His team waved off the run because it was too slow, in their opinions to qualify (160-162). Rain started after his run and no others attempted to qualify. Had his team taken the run he would have won the pole! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...thumbsdown.gif
If also rained on Sunday and thus pole day was moved to the next weekend. AJ takes the pole with a speed of 170 and change. Poor Jigger didn't make the race in 69 nor in any of his other 6 attempts. Lowest qualifying speed to make the field in 69 - 160.851. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif |
Re: Vintage pics taken @ Indy in '69
So the 69 Indy 500 didn't actually take place on May 30th 1969 as it lists on the door decals of the pacecar? Interesting Indy 500 trivia!

Last picture bottom right corner. Is that guy wearing a black jacket with Camaro in orange script? [/ QUOTE ] Yes he is...also notice the steps are wet, confirming the rain theory. I should say the pics were taken during "race weekend" or at least I assume. The person I got them from wasn't the photographer, and wasn't present at the race. Just going by what I see depicted same as you all. The attached pic is dated 5-30-69 on the back. Some sort of commotion in the pits requiring fire extinguishers. |

A close up shot of the pits...dig the tar top powered thing-a-ma-jig. Is that a starter for the race cars?

A rain soaked Gasoline Alley, note the Hot Rod staffers. Anyone restoring a vintage Bolens or Wheel Horse, here's your pay dirt. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/tongue.gif

Re: Vintage pics taken @ Indy in '69
It's also probably difficult to see in the scans, but in pic 2 the middle car's Indy Pace Car decals are very noticeably crooked. Also, pic 6, the quarter has a decal that says "Festival Queen" apparently used to carry the "Festival Queen." https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

Re: Vintage pics taken @ Indy in '69
Crooked decals on the middle car? I thought it looked like the car was carrying some "extra baggage".
|
Re: Vintage pics taken @ Indy in '69
In the original pics it's very obvious that the decals aren't very straight in relation to the body lines, but I doubt many original pace cars were.
