Please help 68 SS 427 #s match?
 

I have seen David Koresh's "Waco Tx Wacko"
1968 SS 427 Camaro it is reported to be a number matching car---black in color--recently sold but is coming up for sale again?-----would this be a copo car? It is LA built car. Nice looking car What would be the price range for this car??? Thanks to all and great board. Todd

It being a 68 would tell you its not a Numbers matching car!!! Someone transplanted that 427 into it, just who, dont know!!

thank you for your reply! I had no idea that 68s didnt have the option for a 427, that is why I posed the question on this great forum. I'm assuming Koresh's car got a resto of some sort? Last time I saw pictures, it had sidepipes, mags, and some custom "bodywork" courtesy of the Feds' bulldozers.

As far as I know at least three of the -68 Yenko Camaros got their 427 engines at the factory. Two all iron L-88 cars and one L-72(the "Heath car"). All documented in some way.
Aren´t they considered to be "pilot cars" for the -69´s to come ?

The Heath car is an interesting one, I've talked to prior owners of that car who laugh about the engine part - it had several engines before the 'One and Only on the Planet' giveaway. The common belief is that there were indeed no proven 427's installed into the '68 Camaros. The pilot car situation is the closest one, but we don't know the vin # of the paperwork for the pilot car!

I won´t argue with you Marlin, since I have only read about it in two articles, from 1996 and 1997.

It says in one of them that all three Yenko Camaros, one white in Illinois, one black in Indiana and one light blue metallic in Colorado, have some sort of documentation.
Heath found a broadcastsheet in his Camaro it says, and that made Chevrolet investigate if it had been built with a 427 at the factory.
The other two all iron L-88 cars still have their protect-O-plate according to the article. The engine code is said to be MV.

Has it been confirmed that none of this is true ?

I believe the last -71 LS-6 Corvettes were sold with iron heads for 600$ less, and they were still considered to be LS-6 cars.

Yenko liked to build iron-head L88's for customers, so that is where that reference comes from.

To my knowledge the white one from IL in that article is the only one that might be a 427 factory install, it has some unique badging that might indicate it being a prototype. The way the got around the emissions requirement for the 427 factory install in the '68's was to list the car as an 'export' - pretty slick!

You are missing the main point that the L-88 was never offered from the factory with cast iron heads. That would be something a dealer would have to change after the car was delivered. It would make a large difference in the value not to mention the originally of a car.

What happened later with the LS-6 was a factory thing. The value of the car would still be there either way the car was "Delivered" from the factory.

I wasn´t thinking about the value at all. I was trying to describe the engines. And since there are no L-88´s with iron heads from the factory there is no other L-# I can think of to use.
And of course the magazines used the phrase "all iron L-88".

The L-88 was 12.5 to one compression. Very tempermental Engines. Chevy only offered them thru Corvettes for three years. Less than 400 them right!! Why would they offer that engine in 68 Camaro. It was not offered in a Chevelle Or Big Chevy. Why a Camaro I am still waiting for paper work for a L-89 Nova. They made 311 of them. We know there are 50 Gibb COPO Nova's and we have 23 of them found.
How come of 311 L-89's Nova's. We have not found one L-89 yet??

A lot more research has to be done on the 67 and 68 Yenko 427 Camaros as there are many unanswered questions. The info is out there but seems to be scattered around the country.
I know on the 1968 Yenkos some COPO codes and information was found that was incorrectly decoded. This resulted in such claims as factory built 427s and/or L88s but this has not been proven.
There is some evidence that Yenko did have a 427 Camaro certified as USA emission legal for sale in the USA .
Yenko did state in some of the 1968 documents that the Yenko Camaro was the only 427 Super Camaro to pass US Gov. emission test.
In reference to the L88 claims - Yenko did advertise that some of the 1968 427 Camaros came with a special intake and 850cfm Holley same as the L88 engine. At first I thought the L88 intake and Holley was part of the COPO 396 package and may be the reason the original L78 had the special MV code but this is not proven. They claimed the Heath Yenko had a original special intake and Holley but other people claim they have original intake and Holley and it is same as std L78. So not sure on this.

I have always said that I'm not an expert, but my car has a 512 block stamped CE and the heads are steel and the casting number is 990, which I've been told was only used on CE stamped motors. There is a stamping on the manifold side of the driver's side head that says "L-88".
The Corvette guys who come to Columbus for the Bob McDorman show have told me that this is correct, but only for CE stamped motors. As I understand it, anyone could walk into the parts department and buy a replacment motor like mine.
I have tried to take a picture of the stamping, but it's a difficult shot.

--------Did you live in Bob McDormans area back in the day (1968/1970)??? I am trying to verify what Im still sure I saw back in that era at Bob McDs Chevrolet dealer. I went to OU and passed by Bobs every time I went home to Medina and one time I swear I saw several L89 Novas outside in the front line. Just cant imagine that my mind is playing a trick on me, but it was a long time ago. I know Bob to this day and should just call him and ask if he remembers but dont want to bother him.

I've only lived in Columbus since 1978. Grew up in the Motor City, alum of EMU,'73.
McDorman sold alot of Hi Perf cars, including some COPO Camaro's. He has one in his collection now that he sold new, and I've heard that he sold 4 or 5, depending on who you ask. There were 5 Chevy dealers in Columbus that sold COPO cars, some well documented, some never documented.
As for the Korsesh Camaro, there were a couple of photos in the last Hemmings Muscle mag. It sold for $37k.
Looked nice, and Hemmings thought it would sell for $40-45.
The 427 was put into the car sometime in the 80's.
Why anyone would want to pay for a car previously owned by a physcopathic child molester is a mystery to me, JMO, but as a nice street car it would have sold for alot less $$$.
