Yenko Hood Tachometer
Does anyone know if any of these new electronic spark controls that fit under our existing distributor caps will still allow the Dixco hood tachometer to function properly. I understand from a friend that the tachometer won't function properly unless the standard mechanical points are in place. Any thoughts?

Re: Yenko Hood Tachometer
Good question, and one I'd be interested in knowing the answer to myself... My Deuce has points, but my Camaro has the "Pertronix" unit you describe, and I have never been able to get a SW 970 tach to do a darn thing in it... I have always blamed it on the tach itself, as I have tried several 990B monitors without luck... never thought about it, but maybe the problem is the ignition system, not the tach... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif
PS.. i just made this post because i wanted to use that new graemlin. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif |
Re: Yenko Hood Tachometer
Joe,
That graemlin is pretty cool. He looks like I feel about so many questions. Thanks for posting, maybe somebody will take a look and give us an answer. Anyway, perhaps what I heard is true about the module units. That could be the answer to your tachometer problems. Let's see what somone can come up with. Re: Yenko Hood Tachometer
While not *exactly* the same...
I have an MSD manual that mentions work arounds with different tachs and monitors...let me dig it up, and maybe it will lead us in the right direction... |

Re: Yenko Hood Tachometer
<font color="blue">MSD sells a tach adapter which should straighten out the signal.
Call the tech dept, they 'may' be some help. </font> |

Good luck getting through...

Re: Yenko Hood Tachometer
That sounds like it is certainly worth a try. Is everyone else still running on regular points or am I trying to be too "high tech" about this? I just remember so many times with the thickness guage and dwell meter and of course the old emery board to re-juvenate the points contacts. I have owned this car since it was new so I have been under the hood more times than I can count. But, it sure is less imtimidating than opening the hood on a new car. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Re: Yenko Hood Tachometer
Personally, I'd leave the points in it if you haven't already bought the electronic ignition module... I'm sure Rob could point out the pros/cons as to how many 10ths its worth to install the Pertronix, but personally, I haven't noticed any difference from a good ol' set of points. I originally installed it on my Camaro when i was battling an ignition problem that was later traced to a bad reproduction delco plug wire, otherwise it would still have the stock points in it. My Deuce still has points, and I have no plans to "upgrade". PS.. my hood tach works too! (thanks to Joe Swezey!) https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif

[/ QUOTE ] Actually, I'm not a fan of Pertronix...and according to some of my fellow Pure Stock racers, a good set of points (I've had good luck with Accell) will out power the Pertronix on the dyno! In fact, I believe it was Casey that said "Pertronix is the devil!" Anyway, if you're still looking to do away with your points for good, and do it correctly, then I'd pursue *other* avenues... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif |
Re: Yenko Hood Tachometer
Joe,ever try a 990A on the Camaro? I want to,but haven't had the chance.I run a MSD 6A with an tach adapter and the MSD dist and use a 960 SW with no problems.I want to install one of my 970's.... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif

You could do like my buddies in HS did... stand on the cowl and swing a sledgehammer against the firewall until an HEI cap fits "nicely". https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/blush.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/tongue.gif

Re: Yenko Hood Tachometer
Steve,
No, never tried, but i know I have a couple 990A's around here. To be honest, I still think its the tach itself, but i made a bracket that fits behind the plastic dash cluster to keep the weight of the tach from eventually cracking the housing, and it makes changing the tach nearly impossible without removing the entire cluster from the car... which is a bummer, because i now have about a dozen other tachs i could try if i could just easily remove the one that's on there lookin' pretty but not doing anything. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/tongue.gif |
Re: Yenko Hood Tachometer
The MSD unit works well.I run a Delco cap,309R,I think.....It looks like the factory dist.It uses a two wire hook up that can be easily hidden. The rest of my MSD crap is hidden inside my front fender behind the battery.Overlooked by almost every judge......... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif

Re: Yenko Hood Tachometer
Looks like I'm first then......I 'll dig one out and give it a shot.I think the A box is for a transistor ignition, but what type...... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Re: Yenko Hood Tachometer
I would suggest you give a call to TACHMAN ...he rebuilds and converts these tachs and would know the correct way to make them work with a non point system... http://www.tachman.com/

Re: Yenko Hood Tachometer
I think I will just keep the original style points since I still have the original distributor with the correct date code on it. My original Dixco hood tachometer still works also so it's probably best to let things stay the way they were designed to be. Let me know if anyone has any luck getting their tachometer to work on one of the new systems and what you had to do to get it to work. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/flag.gif

Re: Yenko Hood Tachometer
Just keep an extra set of points and a book of matches in the glove and you'll never get stuck !

Re: Yenko Hood Tachometer
I've got the Pertronix set-up in one of my cars and the stock Knee Knocker Tach works fine.......I wouldn't do this again as the Pertronix unit has a certain Lag time in the car starting......it seems to take about 5 seconds for the unit to energize itself...........I've learned to turn the key on and wait ........then start......it's a little thing that becomes annoying......other than that .....No Problems............Yet......

Re: Yenko Hood Tachometer
my Dixco hood tach is wired to a "typical" HEI distibutor (engine and trans from a 1991 Z-28) it works great, light and all ! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/burnout.gif
