I just bought a neat little 68 Camaro

Just got back last night from a 1650 mile road trip to pick up a Camaro that I bought this past week. From what I can tell, and I'm certainly no expert, it seems that the car may be a real 68 Z28. The car (body) is in original unrestored condiction and has many parts that I believe to be authentic Z28 items. The guy I bought it from said when he bought it the 302MO motor was in pieces in the trunk. He has had the car for 2 yrs. and during that time did only enough work to it so he could drive it, including putting a 66 or 67 327 in it. I got the MO block, 291 heads, 1178 crank, pink rods, 641 intake, (correct timing cover, oil pan, fan, throttle linkage, valve covers, smog manifolds) with the car. Missing, are the distributor, carb, alternator, smog pump and DF wheels. The MO block is a 3914678 casting with a cast date of K137 (Nov. 13, 1967)( car build date is 01D Jan 4th week) and does not appear to have been decked, however the vin on the block does not match the car. Here is a list of things that I can verify, if there are other things to look for let me know and I'll do it. Timing sticker, tire sticker, radiator tag, GT alternator bracket, brake vac hose bracket, WT master cyclinder, 2 piece 4 piston disk brakes, BU 12 bolt with multileaf springs, sticker on front coil spring, tic toc tach, console with gauges, shoulder belts, original paint with correct stripes (around script on rear deck lid), push bars on rear bumper. The 302 emblems are still in the original boxes with the factory paperwork still attached in the glove box. The holes in the fender for these are punched. The car had Z28 emblem's on it, but these holes are drilled. I think the orginal owner liked the Z emblems when they came out and put them on. Also the left front fender is GM replacement and when they repainted it the paint didn't hold up very well. Car also has orginal interior that is in excellent condiction. I would like
some feedback from some of you who know these cars and I can furnish any pics that you would need to help determine if it is in fact a real Z28.
Richard

My pictures are to big and I can't figure out how to resize them. I can resize them in an email though.

Make note of the redline on the tach, number of leaves on the rear springs (if original) and also the code on the front spring tags (if original). These should all be good additional clues.

Re: I just bought a neat little 68 Camaro

Reline is 6000, 4 leaf spring and EE code on front spring. Rear leafs have a little 1/2 spring with 1 shackle added to the back half. Could this have been for wheel hop?

Re: I just bought a neat little 68 Camaro

Leaf springs look original and right for a Z, EE code coils are correct for a Z, tach is correct and I think the radiator tag is also correct but my memory is not that good to remember what the radiator tag should be. The little springs attached to the rear spring leafs would not be for wheel hop, more likely to prevent the rear end of the car from. Very nice car.

Re: I just bought a neat little 68 Camaro

Yes, the UH radiator code is correct for a 68Z, but it's also correct for a 327 (LF7 with AC).

Re: I just bought a neat little 68 Camaro

Thanks for the input Bill. It looks to me like the gas tank has never been removed, did they put build sheets on any Camaros above the tank or in the back seat? Also there is a punch card that the previous owner found under the carpet and sound deadener. It was folded and the part that was up was painted lemans blue. The only info that is legible is the cowl tag info 12437 NOR 082308 712 UU . The part that is under the paint is not legible. It also shows the Fisher carriage and says 1968 BODY (then the blue paint starts to cover the rest.)

Re: I just bought a neat little 68 Camaro

Thats a real 68 Z if i ever saw one. Heck, its got original paint...Aside from a brand new flowmaster welded in, even the exhaust looks like it may be original. I know the documentation freaks won't believe anything without a protectoplate, buildsheet, etc... but nothing I see shows any chance of it being anything else besides a 68 Z. Neat car!

Re: I just bought a neat little 68 Camaro

Yes, the radiator is 3 core although the previous owner had it recored. He said he saved the old one but I don't remember loading one up. I'll have to ask him it send it. He also had to run new brake lines.

Re: I just bought a neat little 68 Camaro

I have never found a buildsheet in a 68 Camaro, so I don't know where to tell you to look. My guess is it is not there but I would certainly look in both the places you mentioned. I agree with Camarojoe that the tailpipes look original. Car has some nice options, with the exterior style trim and the extra interior trim on the the standard interior. Another Z clue are the rear bumper guards. Again, nice find, looks like a nice clean car.

Geez, what a neat find. I agree with Joe, that's a Z if I ever saw one. Congratulations. That's a nice score. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Thanks for the imput and the compliments. There was no buildsheet under the seat, may be a few days before I can get to the gas tank. Does Jerry MacNeish have a web site? I can't find one.

I watched the car on E-bay myself. Looks like an excellent starting point for a resto. What are you going to do with it???

Don't hold your breath on finding the build sheet - very few exist and are as rare as hen's teeth for 68s.

The good news is that the original tire pressure sticker on the glove box door is a dead give away. Its probibly the best indicator of a real 68 Z28. The other pictures point in the same direction.

Icing on the cake would be having the VIN on the MO block match the body indicating the original motor. I would suggest using that block to build a vintage, althought non-matching high RPM 302.

In any event, enjoy the car! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

The datecode will work perfectly for your Z's build date. Except for the Vin# not matching, I would definately rebuild this MO engine you got with the car.

Re: I just bought a neat little 68 Camaro

How far off is the CON VIN# stamped on the block, from the cars VIN tag?

69rsz28 08-08-2005 03:13 PM

Re: I just bought a neat little 68 Camaro

The difference in the vin#s is around 3000. The heads are dated K227(Nov 22, 67)and C218(Mar. 21, 68). I can't help but wonder if the wrong motor was put in at the factory. Are these close enough for that to be the case?
Redneck, my plans are to eventually restore the car, but not sure as to what level. I'm not going to change anything until I can get it authenticated with some kind of paperwork.

I've sent Tony a pic of the rearend code, looks like BU 0209G1 with E under it. Can't get a pic of the transmision codes (had to use a mirror and flashlight for the vin) but the build date is P8A12(Muncie,1968,Jan12) and the vin appears to be #'s matching, 28?xxxxxx.) https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif

Try sticking Silly Putty on the tranny and carefully peel it off. Then you can take a pic of the Silly Putty and reverse it to get the numbers...

Learned that from a couple of ole dogs on the site https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif

Re: I just bought a neat little 68 Camaro

Thanks Jeff, modeling clay works to. Is it a good idea to post my VIN#'s on the internet? The clay method shows the stamping to be the last 9 numbers of my vin. Is this correct? What looked like a 2 in the mirror was actually a 7 in the clay. Also if I decoded the rearend correctly it is 9 days after the car build week.

Re: I just bought a neat little 68 Camaro

That is a great car, The originality is worth more than most people realize, when you start taking it apart you will probably find alot of inspection marks and unique things.
I really like how the 302 emblems look vs the Z28 emblems, gives more of a sleeper look. Lemans Blue with 302 emblems is extremely rare, they only offered that combo for about 1 month of production. Lemans Blue came out in early calender year 68 and the 302 emblem was discontinued in late Jan. or early Feb. 68.

Re: I just bought a neat little 68 Camaro

Thanks James, thats good information. From what I've been told so far, it looks like the transmission is original. It also looks like the rearend and motor possibly came from the same donor car. I've contacted Jerry MacNeish and hopefully I can get the car to him within the next 30 days for him to look at.
