I hope Speed doesn't have Brock Yates as one of the hosts this year. I don't know how many times I wanted to reach through the TV last year and strangle him when a musclecar crossed the block. Especially when the Phase III GT crossed and he had some lame a$$ comments. With the increased interest in musclecars these days, Speed should get a host who has a clue about them and appreciates the cars. Not some Car and Driver codger. (off the soap box now)

Believe me it was even worse standing right outside where the cars went in...and getting the commentary from Alain (Alan?)De Cadanet...some things that he said on Saturday night were just unbelieveable...I asked him where they got their information from...and he said they had people to research the info...plus they added their own commentary...

Stuart,

It looks like the company I work for might not display this year...though a person that I work with will have a vendor booth selling the race deck flooring...so I may work a deal with him to work in his booth for a day in exchange for one days pass...if our company doesn't go....of course I could always just get a week long pass...I'm sure I could get it discounted...

Are you coming to Barrett Jackson this year? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

Re: BJ 2006

Hey, for what it is worth, I spent 4 days and 1,000 miles on a road rally with DeCadenet in April and we had a blast. He is a true car guy and absolutely hilarious. Completely off-color and totally politically incorrect at all times. He was the grand marshall of the rally, and as such, had to give an opening night speech. Well, he gets up there and starts telling dirty jokes and about how he only started racing to get women, after they figured out his "photography studio" in London never bought any film! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

Some of the more uptight women on the rally protested, and the organizers warned Alain to "clean it up" for the closing night speech. So we decided he should step it up a notch, since he wasn't getting invited back anyway - I wish I could have taped it. Priceless.

Regardless, when his Lancia broke down on the 2nd day, I offered up a seat in my 65 GT350 so he wouldn't have to ride in a tow truck. Driving out of Vegas, he told me he only drove a Shelby once, a Hertz car he rented in 66 - and promptly blew the engine street racing it. So, I was slightly nervous! But we took turns driving and giving each other a hard time...and had a blast. The guy drives like a maniac, but is a truly great driver. What you don't get from the TV is that he is like the rest of us - just doesn't know anything about muscle cars. I am working on that, and a Victory by Design is in the works on Shelbys and Corvettes. Alain also has me looking for a Shelby for him.

The guy designed, built, and raced his own F1 car, restored and flies his own WWII Spitfire fighter plane, races motorcycles, and is a real decent guy. He is also the father of Amanda DeCadenet, remember her?

We have to remember that just because a guy may not be an expert on the cars WE like that he still can be a real "car guy". Conversely, I would hate to see any of us announcing specs on pre-war Alfa Romeos, Vincent Black Shadows, British fighter planes, or the history of the postal system (which he is writing a book on).

Bottom line - cut the guy some slack - I know him and guarantee there isn't a person in this club that wouldn't immediately figure out he is one of us if you met him.

Or maybe I am just a https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...arleySucks.gif as well??? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/blush.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/blush.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/haha.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/haha.gif

Re: BJ 2006

No offense, but this has nothing to do with how good a guy Alan or his jokes are.
You as a Car dealer/owner/broker have to relate to this. With the amount of money being paid on these cars today as well as the all important production & quality details, either as the seller or possible bidder,I for one don't want to hear his studdering cander, long pauses or apologies while a vehicle he doesn't know anything about is currently on the block.
He should do at least a lil general research homework,or else politely dismiss himself from that certain vehicle on the block and admit he knows nothing about it.I think the majority of the viewers can see him acting like a deer in the headlights, and would appreciate him more if he acknowledged this.
I know I would.

Re: BJ 2006

I understand what you're saying Rick, but,I think we need to remember that the coverage on Speed is just entertainment. Hey, "it's T.V." If anybody is using Alan's coverage as a basis for bidding, they deserve what they get. I never got the impression that he was presenting his analysis as the ultimate evaluation of a particular muscle car. In fact, I recall him mentioning that muscle cars were not his area of expertise. Now, if you want to talk about Brock Yates....... LOL

One thing that sticks in my mind about alan is his opinion. The remark about the 69 gr/gr copo camaro, "GE telephone company car". I agree with mike, no one is going to buy a car based on there comments. Roger

Re: BJ 2006

I don't see what the big deal is about, speed channel would be hard pressed to find someone that was an expert on all the cars that come across the block and i think they did a pretty good job. Alain at least tried and did admit on many occasions that he did'nt know much about some of the cars going through and did the best he could. Granted that the muscle car coverage is not up to par they could stand to have someone added to the show with more muscle car knowledge.

Steve Magante was a absolute Ace on the Musclecar coverage...

csx289 10-24-2005 08:46 PM

Re: BJ 2006

Rick,
That is my point - we may or may not appreciate his knowledge (or lack thereof with muscle cars) or sense of humor (GE company car jokes for example), BUT, in this day and age where people attack one another for various reasons based on perception alone I did not think the https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...arleySucks.gif remark was warranted. That, IMHO, was a personal attack and it seemed as if everybody was more than willing to jump on the bandwagon.

All I am saying that I know the guy, and he is a good guy and means well. They did not hire him for his knowledge, they hired him because he is a racing legend, well spoken, funny, and is a good "color" guy. BJ is a spectacle, and Speed wants their broadcast to carry that into people's homes. Even you have to admidt that DeCadenet is sometimes entertaining and see how he could get non-car people to watch = ratings!

What I find appaling is the real "color" guy for most auctions, the guy who reads off details of the car and history, ie, color guy intros the car, auctioneer takes over, bidding slows, color guy stirs up the crowd again "One Of FIFTY ladies and gentlemen!" , then back to the auctioneer. IMHO, there is only one guy who ever did that job justice, Ed Lucas. He is a car guy, was at BJ for years and was dismissed maybe 2 years ago. I think it does the cars a huge disservice to have a color guy fumble around and give bad info and screw up descriptions to the BIDDERS who are physically at the auction to buy a particular car.

Another point I tried to make was nobody knows everything about all cars. Your area of expertise would not include pre-war cars or European sports cars, I would guess. The announcers for Speed, Keith Martin, DeCadenet, Yates, Varsha, etc., are there to try to cover a wide spectrum of cars. They are close most of the time. Except Yates, who should be put out of his misery. LOL.

Hey, enjoy BJ for what it is - reality TV at its best. If DeCadenet ticks you off, hit Mute. You know more about muscle cars than he does, it is not as if you are watching for educational purposes! Or, take it with a grain of salt and realize the bidders can not hear the broadcast.

I think you know what I was getting at... we all need to be a little less harsh on people we don't agree with or don't even know. Like Charley. I thought he was a jackass before I met him, but never said it. Now that I know him, I feel justified in saying "Charley is a jackass". The thing hit me the wrong way, sorry.

Colin

Re: BJ 2006

I'm with Colin. Decadenet is a great and funny true car guy. I had a long and very off color conversation with him ( his divorce ramblings) and was impressed with him as a person and his car/racing knowledge. He is there as an expert, but not on American muscle. They leave that to Brock Yates to completely butcher. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...thumbsdown.gif
Alain is learning and truly appreciates what we do.
Steve was definately better........ they need someone who knows not only the cars, but the market, the hobby and it's people.

Yep- here is what popped up when I Googled her:

Amanda De Cadenet
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Jump to: navigation, search
Amanda De Cadenet (born May 19, 1972) is a British actress, and the daughter of race car driver Alain de Cadenet. She was married to John Taylor of Duran Duran, with whom she had a daughter, Atlanta. She is probably better known for her personal life than her acting work; she was Courtney Love's best friend for a while, and has been linked romantically to Keanu Reeves.

Amanda is reported to have actually turned 39 on May 19 2005, which would make her birthdate 1966.

I think this Futurliner is the Canadian Fido Phone Co. unit w/ a paint job close to original. . There's still one or two of these Futurliners out there waiting to be found by anyone who wants to look....visit the futurliner.com website for restoration progress on one of the units also info on everything Futurliner including some info on the earlier GM Streamliner units too.

Alain DeCadenet may be a bloke and shouldn't comment on things he doesn't know but is a real car guy down deep. . He has a large car collection incl. Ferrari and Porsche race hardware plus I think has an operational Spitfire fighter plane? . I give the man respect as I remember watching him race when he was a Can-Am driver back in the early 70's.

I think the point being made is that Alain is perfect for the "Classic" cars, but is a duck out of water in the Muscle car area........BJ seems to be going thru a transition from Classics to Muscle......They should adjust accordingly.........
